Chapter 4: Intrigues and Deals Damian Blackwood’s POV Damian Blackwood sat in a shadowy corner of a dimly lit bar, nursing a whiskey as he scanned the crowd. The air reeked of stale alcohol and desperation, much like the people who frequented this place. But for him, it was a haven anonymity came easy here, cloaked in darkness and cheap bourbon. The door creaked open, letting in a gust of cool air and Victor Drake. Victor strode in like he owned the place, all calculated swagger and smirking bravado. His tailored black coat swung behind him as he approached the booth with the arrogance of someone who knew he had the upper hand. “Damian, my friend,” Victor greeted smoothly, sliding into the seat across from him. “You look like you could use something stronger than that watered-down garbage.” “I’m fine,” Damian replied curtly, his fingers absently tracing the rim of his glass. “Did you go to Juliette Carter’s apartment like I asked?” Victor leaned back, that smug grin already playing on his lips. “Of course. She’s more interesting than I anticipated.” Damian raised an eyebrow. “How so?” “She’s tied to Xander Blackwood, which gives us leverage. That charity gala? Something clicked between them. The man’s eyes never left her.” Damian narrowed his eyes, interest piqued. “How do you know that?” Victor chuckled, tapping the table with a ringed finger. “I have my sources. And an article’s already circulating online speculation that they’re business partners. But I saw them, Damian. The body language? The looks? It’s more than business. She’s in his head.” Damian stiffened, ice sliding through his veins. “So your plan is to manipulate her? Use her desperation?” Victor nodded, his grin sharp as a blade. “She’s trying to break into high society, and she’s got a sick sister. All I have to do is present myself as a benefactor an alternative to Xander. Offer her resources, a partnership, maybe dangle some gallery exposure.” “And then?” Damian’s voice was cold, demanding. Victor leaned in. “Once she’s dependent on me, we use her to get to Xander. You’ll send him a letter taunt him. Make him react. He’s always been the golden boy, but he’s got cracks. All we need is one clean strike to fracture the empire.” Damian sat still for a long beat, the noise of the bar fading into background static. His jaw clenched. This was his moment. His entire life, he’d been the forgotten Blackwood, the shadow trailing behind Xander’s golden light. But now… Now, he had a chance to tear that light down. “Let’s get to writing,” he said quietly, signaling the bartender for paper and pen. His mind churned with words, calculated venom forming like acid on his tongue. ___ Hours later… Across town, in a dingy, paper-strewn office above a shuttered pawn shop, Damian reread the letter he had crafted. The small desk lamp cast long shadows across his face as he stared at his words, written with deliberate cruelty. Xander, The time for complacency has ended. Juliette Carter has caught your eye, complicating matters. Your failure to consider my position has made you vulnerable, and I intend to take advantage. Failure to comply will result in consequences neither of us will enjoy. Trust me; it’s best to play nice with me.---Damian He sealed the envelope with a confident flick of the wrist, his signature scrawled like a curse across the flap. His hands trembled not with fear, but anticipation. The kind of hunger that couldn’t be fed by money or praise. This was legacy he craved. Dominance. Retaliation. Victor reappeared in the doorway, phone in hand. “The package is ready to be delivered to Xander’s office first thing tomorrow. But we have a problem.” Damian’s jaw tensed. “What kind of problem?” Victor tossed the phone onto the desk. A photo blinked to life on the screen. Juliette, walking out of a café… with someone else. A man with sandy brown hair and a familiar face. “His name’s Travis Kane. A quiet investor. Low profile, but connected to the Blackwoods. Rumor is, he used to be close with Juliette before she disappeared from the art scene.” Damian’s blood ran cold. “Are you saying there’s another player in this game?” Victor’s voice dropped. “More than that. I think Juliette might be hiding something bigger than we thought. Something he knows.” Damian stood abruptly, pacing the narrow space. “Then we find out what it is. If she’s playing two sides Xander and Travis Kane we expose her. Crush them both.” Victor smirked. “And if we can't expose her?” Damian turned, a glint of malice in his eyes. “Then we burn everything down until the truth crawls out of the ashes.” Just then, a buzz from Damian’s phone broke the moment. An encrypted message lit the screen: “Target intercepted. New development. Need to meet now.” Victor, lounging beside him with a scotch in hand, leaned in and read it over his shoulder, his smug grin tightening into something more serious. “That from our contact inside Blackwood Industries?” Damian’s jaw tensed. “Yeah. And if they’re using this channel, it means the update’s critical.” Victor set down his glass, eyes sharpening. “New development could mean anything. Juliette flipped? Xander moved faster than expected? Or maybe someone else entered the game.” Damian rose abruptly, slipping the phone into his coat pocket. “Whatever it is, it’s big enough to demand a face-to-face.” Victor stood too, his expression unreadable. “Then let’s find out if our perfect storm is still on track or if someone just shifted the winds.” Damian’s nod was slow, deliberate. “Let’s move.” his voice cold, icy caring for nothing. They grabbed their coats in haste, storming out into the stormy night without a second thought. Thunder cracked like a warning in the distance, its deep rumble echoing through the darkened sky. Rain began to fall in heavy sheets, drenching everything in seconds and slicking the streets with an ominous sheen. Their footsteps echoed in the silence, each step a defiance of the chaos that threatened to swallow the night whole.
