Chapter 8 The Setup

The polished boardroom table reflected a pale woman in a simple grey dress. I wore no makeup and had pulled my hair into a tight knot. Arthur and his lawyer looked at me and saw what I needed them to see. Arthur sat at the far end of the mahogany table with his lawyer beside him. He leaned back and left the papers in the middle for me to cross the room and collect. “Let’s get this over with.” His lawyer pushed a thick stack of documents toward me. “Sign here, here, and here.” I reached for the gold-plated pen and let my fingers shake around it. Across the table, Arthur settled deeper into his chair. Arthur rose and came around the table. He bent over my shoulder, bringing the smell of whiskey close to my ear. “You really thought a few laps in a fast car could get you out of my cage?”
