In the end, Anya became the leader of the Royal Guard. But there something conspicuous about it all. Every member but Anya was the descendant or child of the past members of the Royal Guard. For example, the mother of Alder from House Flora was a member of the Royal Guard. He told Anya he had vague memories of her because he was little when his mother went on the expedition. Everyone knows how the story ends, the Royal Guard was brutally massacred by the fairies.
They all saw the portrait of the first Royal Guard- their parents in the Hall of Warriors. There was one girl that caught Anya's eye. She was from House Hydra. Her name was Kimberly. Her eyes had the viciousness and coldness of a Hous Hydra member but it was strange for Anya to see her because Lucia and Hydreich have never mentioned her before.
"Reed, do you know who Kimberly is?" Anya asked. Reed's mother, Megan of House Viper was the one who stood beside Kimberly.
"That's the first daughter of High House Hydra."
"First daughter?" Anya frowned. She thought Khaleesi was the only daughter of House Hydra.
"Yeah, they never told you? Kimberly is Khaleesi's older sister."
"Oh."
Anya knew that the Royal Guard was relatively new. Before them, it had only been instituted once for the first time. That was the first dynasty of the Royal Guard. Now, they were the second dynasty of the Royal Guard.
"Wouldn't that make her your older sister as well?" Cairn asked. He was of House Magnetron. His mother, Juliet was also in the portrait. She was showing her deadly pearly whites with a metal sword in one hand and the other hand swung around Sierra's father, Stephen. They all looked at their parents in awe. Apparently, they hadn't seen any other photo of their mother or father since they died. Their longing for them was clear in their eyes. They were once close to them.
"I suppose so," Anya said. "I'm the only one that had a sister in the Royal Guard."
In total, Anya could tell who was who because of their resemblance to their children. Stephen of House Terrain has Sierra for a daughter. Melody of House Vulcan had Chris for a son. Juliet of House Magnetron has Cairn for a son. Felix of house Forest has Iris for a daughter. Megan of House Viper has Reed for a son. Fae of House Flora has Alder for a son. Sawyer of House Slasher has Aria for a daughter. Margaret of House Medela has Aeson for a son. Lastly, Axel of House Astro has Levinia for a daughter.
"Who was the leader of the first Royal Guard?" Anya asked, still analyzing the portrait. Everyone looked deadly and dangerous but were friendly with each other.
"Isn't it obvious?" Alder said. "Your sister, Kimberly, was the leader. The two of you look way too alike to be sisters in my opinion."
Alder was right. Kimberly was the leader. Now that Anya thought about it, Kimberly was in the center of the portrait and looked more serious than the others despite Sawyer using her shoulder as an armrest.
"You think we'll ever live to their expectations?" Aria whispered, placing her palm against her father's body.
"Hard to tell. They appear to be better than us in a way," Chris shrugged.
"Levinia, we didn't know that a High House Astro existed before. Did your house resurface because you were joining the Royal Guard?" Anya directed her attention to Levinia who was fixated on her father.
Levinia looked startled as everyone looked upon her, "High House Astro almost became extinct believe it or not. In their youth, the elders of our House went on the expedition but the majority of them were also massacred. My aunt, which is my father's sister, I heard she died trying to protect my father. Only ten of them survived. Ten of what was an entire High House. I was the only child my father had with my mother. Unfortunately, my mother also went along in the expedition. I was left orphaned that day. Two of the survivors became the leaders of the House and are waiting to retire until I come of age. High House Astro was recuperating until now- we've come back stronger than ever."
They remained silent until Aeson said, "I think that we all miss them. That's the link we have with one another."
Anya scoffed, "I don't think I have a link with any of you. I'm not even a dragon, you know?"
"Yes..." Iris hesitated. "We've heard the rumors."
"Like what?" Anya asked.
"You're a product of the demon and angel clan. Curse. Blessed. All sorts of stuff," Iris responded.
"Not to mention that they say your mom was a p********e," Aria butted in.
"Aria...I wouldn't mind knocking you out again," Anya warned. "How is it your father and my sister got along so well?"
Aria shrugged to Anya continued, "None of those are true. In fact, I was thirteen was my brother in the human world sold me to the King. I'm not too sure why but it was later found out that I was the King's beloved. So, I don't know anything about my parents. All I know is that they died in a house fire."
"Mhm, that's that I assume. But I'd like to know your ages," Sierra commented and later pointed to the portrait. "They probably were as close as brothers and sisters."
"I'm seventeen," Sierra, Anya, Iris, Aria, and Levinia said in unison.
"I'll admit that is a bit odd," Aeson laughed. "But I'm eighteen."
"Twenty-two," Chris said.
"Twenty," Cairn grinned. Anya saw he had the same deadly pearly whites as his mother.
"Nineteen," Reed grunted.
"Twenty-one," Alder smiled.
"I see Chris is the oldest one," Anya sneered as an unwavering tension grew between them. "How does it feel to lose a beloved?"
Chris immediately lashed out but Cairn and Reed were quick to haul him back as Anya tapped her foot in amusement without even flinching.
"What is wrong with you?" Reed hissed at Anya. "You're so insensitive."
"You have to be patient with a member of House Hydra," Cairn reminded. "My mother told me about Kimberly."
Chris stopped struggling and leaned against a wall as he began to listen to Cairn. "She said that when she first met Kimberly at the age of seven....Kimberly was the warmest sweetest girl she ever met with her baby sister, Khaleesi, always tagging along. But then Kimberly's training began and the next time my mother saw her was when they joined the Royal Guard. She described her as the coldest, vicious, chilling person you'd ever meet. Which was typical for someone of House Hydra. It took a while for Kimberly to finally open up to the group and when she did it, she became full of laughter and happiness. But it only happened in front of them or Khaleesi. In public, she'd return to her stoic-self. "
"And how do I know you're telling the truth?" Anya asked.
"Because before my mother left I was six years old. Old enough to remember what she told me about her friends now."
"You're quite the liar," Anya yawned. "What makes you think you know everything about me?"
"Everyone knows that the descendants of House Hydra start out innocent and cute but then they turn them into cold people," Chris smirked.
"That's beside the point. Anyways, Kimberly might as well be your mother. Any unwanted birth in a High House can easily be hidden. You know, such as throwing you into the human world and let's not forget that you have no memory of your parents," Cairn sounded convinced of himself.
Anya despised how he easily analyzed her, "I suppose Juliet was a close friend of who you call my mother?"
"Close enough to be sisters she would tell me," Cairn admitted.
"And what? Now you want me to be close enough to you to be considered your sister and you my brother?" Anya laughed hollowly.
"No- that's not what I-" Cairn began hurriedly.
"I thought so," Anya hissed. "Stop playing with f- No..."
Anya smiled, "Stop playing with ice because ice burns more than fire."
