Chapter 6 – Ripples Beneath the Surface

1535 Words
The poolside was silent except for the steady drip of water hitting the tiles. Lina sat near the door, her wet hair clinging to her cheeks, clothes sticking to her skin as she squeezed the water from her fiery red strands. Droplets slid down her arms, leaving faint trails as they fell into the shallow puddles forming beneath her. She looked both exhausted and alive, her chest still rising and falling from the rush of her near accident. From the changing room, Adrian emerged. His steps were quiet, purposeful, his damp hair sticking to his forehead. In his hand was a fresh towel. Without a word, he walked to Lina and extended it. She looked up, her eyes widening briefly at the unexpected gesture. “Thank you,” Lina muttered, her voice low and soft. She took the towel and began drying her hair, not daring to look too long at him. Adrian lingered a moment, his gaze fixed on her back. Finally, he broke the silence. “What were you doing down there?” His voice was calm, almost emotionless, but the faint trace of curiosity edged through. Lina chuckled lightly, though her laugh carried the nervous tremor of someone caught off guard. “I was clearing my mind… underwater.” She paused, her lips curving into a small grin as she lowered the towel. “I didn’t know you would think I was drowning.” She tilted her head slightly, watching his expression, studying his sharp features. This was the first time she had heard his voice directed at her, and there was something captivating in the simplicity of that moment. Her grin deepened. Pushing herself up from the floor, Lina brushed her skirt with her hands before stepping closer. She stretched out her arm, offering her hand with an open smile. “Thank you for saving me,” she said sincerely. “My name is Lina Ashford. And you?” For a moment, Adrian simply looked at her. The warmth of her grin—the genuine brightness in her expression—hit him harder than he expected. It was a simple gesture, a handshake, but it stirred something he had almost forgotten: the warmth of being treated as just a boy, not a possession, not a target, not an obligation. His hand twitched, the urge to take hers strong. But then a wall came crashing down inside him, one built from years of endurance and restraint. He shouldn’t do this. He couldn’t. The softness in his eyes hardened. His voice turned cold. “If you’re done swimming, you can leave. I want to use the pool.” Lina blinked, her outstretched hand hanging in the air for a few seconds before she dropped it slowly. Her smile faltered, but she didn’t lash back. Instead, she nodded, masking her disappointment with grace. “Well, if you say so… I’ll leave.” She whispered the words lightly, but the sting lingered in her chest. Gathering her things, she slipped into the changing room. Minutes later, dressed again in her crisp school uniform, Lina stepped back out. Her red hair now framed her face in loose waves, still damp but striking against the neatness of her uniform. She glanced toward the pool and found Adrian already swimming, slicing through the water effortlessly, as though trying to bury himself beneath its surface. Shaking her head, she muttered, “Rude.” A faint smile curved her lips despite herself, then she turned and left the pool behind. Meanwhile, outside the school, a black luxury car rolled through the gates. Inside, Elena sat comfortably, her manicured nails glinting under the sunlight as she scrolled her phone. Her lips curled into a practiced smile while she spoke into it. “Yeah, today is the day, isn’t it?” she murmured. “Don’t worry, Mom, I’ll be early.” Her tone was sweet, smooth. After hanging up, she casually tapped through her notifications—until one froze her completely. A message. A picture. Her hand stiffened as she opened it. The photo filled her screen: Adrian and the new girl, standing close at the pool, so close it looked as though they were about to kiss. Elena’s smile shattered. Her eyes darkened instantly, her lips twisting into a scowl. How dare her? …No. How dare him? Her heart pounded as fury rose, sharp and fast. The audacity, the insolence, the insult—it was unbearable. Adrian was hers. He belonged to her, whether he liked it or not. No girl would take what was hers. Her nails clicked against the screen as she turned to the driver. “Turn the car around. We’re going back to the school. I forgot something.” “Yes, ma’am,” the driver replied, veering the car sharply. Elena leaned back into the leather seat, her entire body tense, rage simmering. The calm, untouchable Elena Lancaster was gone, replaced by a girl whose pride had been pierced. Her mind was a whirlwind: anger at Adrian’s betrayal, anger at the audacity of the transfer girl, anger at herself for even caring so much. No one makes a fool out of me. At the same time, Lina stepped out into the parking lot, glancing around only to find Nora’s car already gone. She sighed. Nora must have left when she noticed Lina was late. “It’s okay,” Lina muttered under her breath. “I’m not some spoiled rich kid who doesn’t know how to use a bus.” She straightened her bag on her shoulder and began walking toward the gate. That’s when she saw her. A familiar figure stood just outside the school gates, nervously peering in. Her mother. “Mother!” Lina called, rushing forward. Her mother’s face lit up with relief. “Oh, Lina, my dear!” She hurried to embrace her daughter tightly. “Your hair is wet?” “It’s fine, I was in the pool.” Lina’s smile softened as she pulled back. “Mom, what are you doing here?” “What do you think? You left home unannounced! I tried calling you, but you didn’t answer. I was worried, that’s why I came to check on you.” Her mother’s voice trembled with both relief and scolding. Lina’s heart twisted. A pang of guilt pricked her, but she swallowed it down. She didn’t regret her choice, not entirely. This was the path she needed to take. “Mom, let’s go somewhere so we can talk this through,” Lina said gently. “Good idea.” Her mother smiled faintly, taking Lina’s hand as the two began to walk away from the school. But just as they were leaving, Elena’s black car rolled through the gates. Lina barely noticed; Elena, lost in her rage, didn’t notice her either. Their paths crossed silently, fate weaving its threads tighter. Inside the building, Adrian climbed out of the pool, droplets streaming down his toned frame as he reached for his towel. His breathing was steady, but his mind was restless. The water couldn’t drown out the weight pressing on his chest. The sound of heels echoed sharply through the hallway. Elena appeared in the doorway, her face twisted in fury. She stormed toward Adrian without hesitation and, with a sharp c***k, slapped him across the face. Adrian’s head turned with the force, but he didn’t protest. His expression remained calm, almost detached, as he looked at her. “You—!” Elena’s voice trembled with rage. She thrust her phone into his face, showing him the photo. “What is this? You met the new girl again? You told me I shouldn’t worry about it!” Her last words exploded into a furious yell. Adrian glanced at the photo, his eyes briefly flickering with something unreadable. The closeness… he hadn’t realized it had looked like that. “Say something! Why aren’t you saying anything?” Elena’s voice cracked. “It was a mistake,” Adrian muttered, his voice calm, almost indifferent. Elena let out a sharp, angry laugh. “Mistake? Twice? That new girl ‘accidentally’ bumps into you, twice? Don’t play me for a fool, Adrian. This isn’t coincidence—this is a plan!” “It’s not what you think,” he said softly, his tone unshaken. Elena’s jaw clenched. “I don’t care. That girl touched my possession twice. I won’t let her go easily.” Her voice dropped to a venomous whisper before she spun on her heel to leave. But before she could step away, something inside Adrian snapped. In one swift motion, he grabbed Elena’s wrist. Her eyes widened as he pulled her toward the edge, and before she could resist, he dragged her with him into the pool. The water swallowed them both. Bubbles rushed upward as Elena struggled in his grip, her movements frantic. Her eyes glared at him beneath the shimmering blue surface. But then, just as her lungs burned for air, Adrian pulled her closer—so close their bodies collided—and pressed his lips to hers in a desperate underwater kiss. The world above disappeared, replaced only by the silence of water and the wild pounding of two hearts.
