She felt it, the subtle shift in the air, the chill that ran down her spine. The sudden tremble in her chest was like a warning that something was about to rattle her peace.
Her dark eyes darted toward the neatly folded envelope laying on her office table: a notice of transfer.
Why the urgency? With squinted brows she tried to comprehend why a letter to resign from her current position and become the personal secretary of the company's new boss was on her table.
Another disturbing question that she pondered on was why she was chosen for this.
She knew very well that she had tried her best to be on the cover throughout the past year. Working quietly, minding her business like a ghost in her cubicle, so what's with this unnecessary stunt.
Her nerves kept spiking and she could not wrap her fingers around it. she wondered if it was because of her unexpected transfer or… she pondered, her eyes squinted as she began to reminisce.
Her hold on her pen tightened
It is definitely it, The title - secretary that makes her want to spit blood. it was Impossible to ignore that being called a secretary again reminded her of the filth of her past.
She has buried Lavender Williams with the remains of her old life - the heartbreak, the silent wars she fought while wearing two masks: loyal secretary by day, secret wife by night. She wined and dined with pain for three years. Now she was Elara Scott.
This was her new life, she loved the peace and would never trade it for anything or anyone.
Ding!
The sound of the intercom abruptly distorted her thoughts.
“Hello, it's the sales manager Elara speaking” She said in a cheerful voice.
“The new C.E.O has resumed and you have to start work with immediate effect”.
Bringing down the telephone from her ear she felt the turmoil in her chest again.
Elara stood up and adjusted her pencil skirt in haste. She had to go and meet her new boss now except she wants to go home without a job.
Picking up her files, taking a deep breath she strode out of her cubicle steadily.
Arriving at the top floor, she arrived at the door to the office. While on her way there she received a memo, informing her that she had been selected as one of the staff the new management will be retaining.
This means that the company was bought by the new boss.
Twisting the doorknob slowly she entered the office.
She walked in, her steps were small, unsure as if the ground might betray her. Staring at the interior of the place she couldn't help but wonder who was behind the throne-like custom pristine chair.
The office was a masterpiece of quiet power.
Walls paneled in deep walnut gleamed under the soft glow of hidden lights, casting long shadows that whispered wealth without ever shouting it. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the skyline, but the blinds remained half-drawn. He liked the illusion of control more than the view.
Her brows creased as she had a feeling of familiarity. Her heart remembers but her brain is finding it hard to specify. That smell - Vetiver. It made her remember someone in particular.
“No, no it can't be !” Elara muttered.
Panic surged right through her chest as she sharply took a step back. Sweat popped out of her pores as her heart drummed loud enough for her ears.
The man behind the chair tilted the chair elegantly and in a swift motion he was facing her with a smirk on his lips.
“Lavender” he said, his deep voice laced with unfiltered longing.
Elara froze. That voice, how can he be here,
No… not him, not here. Why did he come?
Hearing her heartbeats didn't surprise her, She didn't want to spare him a glance at this point.
A look at him and her resolve would break.
She swiftly turned around and attacked the doorknob, while in that she heard the lock sound.
“s**t” She let out a frustrated growl. She realized it was a smart door and he had the remote controller.
“Still so stubborn” She heard him remark.
“Have a seat Lavender” he called out, this time his voice laced with coldness.
“Alexander” She muttered, a feeling of nostalgia enveloped her. More than anybody, she does not want anything to do with this man.
“Yes my darling, it's me, in flesh and blood”. He mentioned with a smirk.
Noticing that she wasn't bulging and would not move from her position fixated at the door, he stood up to meet her there.
Walking elegantly with long strides, Alexander stood behind her , his broad shoulders covering her figure.
She knew he was coming towards her, his scent, his aura, his possessiveness, all still the same. Yet something about him felt more powerful. She wondered why he had to buy the company just to find her.
“Are you not tired of this chase game my love?” He whispered softly.
She hated the effect he had on her without even trying too hard. She had changed her name to Elara since she started her new life to avoid anyone recognizing her but it seems that the man before her would ruin that too.
“I own this building and that's why I'm here” She heard him utter in a very nonchalant tone.
Holding her waist and bringing her towards him in swift motion he whispered “But if you ask me on a deeper level, I'm here to take you with me”.
Lavender was already mushy from all these and before she could react, she realized that he was already a few steps away from her.
“Alexander, you know that this is not possible, I want my peace and I want to be alone” Lavender spoke as she took some steps forward in his direction. Although knowing it would be difficult, she had to try to convince him to leave her.
“Why?”
