When we’d arrived in San Diego, I decided that we needed much more than a hotel stay in another city, so I arranged for a month-long vacation in Hawaii. Neither Ma nor Avery argued. After all we’d been through, we deserved to relax in paradise for a while. We spent four days in San Diego, which gave us time to store our belongings and Ma’s car for the extended island getaway.
I’d been right. The very first day we set foot on the island, we’d all felt the peace settle in. Barnett was keeping his distance. He had assured us that he would not contact us unless he absolutely had no choice and he’d kept his word. We’d been on the island a week and had heard nothing.
