My head was buzzing. I was afraid to move because I knew my body would scream but the cold, damp concrete floor that I was laying on seemed to relieve it somewhat.I didn't want to open my eyes. If I did, it would all come flooding back to me.
I wasn't ready.
I wasn't ready to face that my parents were gone. I wasn't ready to accept the deep pit of loss that I was swimming in. My mind flashed back to the helpless look in Chase's eyes before he mouthed his last word to me. RUN. I tried to run but it wasn't good enough. I wan't fast enough. When I ran out our back door towards the woods, I looked back over my shoulder and saw the pickup truck close it's back gate where Marcus was laying. I stopped and crept down below the wooden crates that were stacked in the yard and when the truck began pulling away, I made a break for it. That's when I heard the breaks screech and then the tires ripping through the gravel of our driveway toward me. They caught up to me about a half of a mile into the woods.
I cracked my eyelids open and the orange and pink sunrise was beginning to peak through the small rectangular opening by the ceiling of my cell. Slowly, I lifted my head and looked around. I knew this place. When I was younger, I would sneak down here whenever my family was at the packhouse. Of course, my father had forbidden it but that's exactly why I sneaked down the stone staircase any chance I got! I didn't mean to defy my parents and their rules all the time. I was just a very curious child. I had to explore and see things for myself. I loved to come down to these empty cells and pretend that I was a magical princess, waiting to be rescued by her handsome prince. They had placed me into the first cell at the bottom of the stairs which was the one I always played in.
My body groaned it's objection as I began to sit up. I've been laying on the cold, cement floor all night. As I stood up, I could hear the rumbling of voices coming from upstairs. The men must be in the Dining hall. At this point, the entire pack would know what happened and know the exchange of authority took place. Once Alpha Dean took over, all it took was one mind link to the pack. The entire pack. Then anyone that was on headquarters property would be here first thing this morning to see for themselves.
I walked over to the iron bars and strained my neck against them to see if I could make out anything up the dark stairwell.
"Are you f*****g crazy? Get away from the bars! Don't let him see you!" a voice hissed from the opposite end of the cell corridor. My head snapped around and I could make out large, strong hands holding the bars of the last cell. The knuckles holding the bars were scraped and had dried blood caked around them.
" Who is that down there?" I called out.
"Shut up!" the deep voice whispered back. There was something familiar that tugged at me. I knew that voice from somewhere. "You don't want that sadistic, son of a b***h guard coming back down and realizing you're here. He didn't notice you when they brought me here."
"When did they bring you here? Do you know what happened to my brothers? Are they down here too?" I asked with every ounce of hope that he could tell me something.
"Hey! What the f**k is all this?"
s**t. I watched the shadow of the burly guard lumber down the stairs toward me. He stopped in front of my cell and peered in. His gaze traveled down my body and I became painfully aware that I was still half dressed in my tunic that only came down just past my hips to the tops of my thighs. He licked his lips as he looked back up in my eyes. They were flat, with no soul in them. In that second I knew I was in trouble. I heard a clanking sound and with that the cell door opened and the guard stepped in, closing the door behind him. He stood there for a second, towering over me and I took a step back as my mind raced, trying to figure out how to get out of the cell. How could I get around the guard?
"Looks like a tasty little piece got left here all for me. " he sneered. He took another step closer and I took another step back but I could still feel the heat from his body radiating off him. "Don't run away darling....you and me, we're gonna have some fun."
His giant hands grabbed me by the arms and he dipped his head to try and kiss me. I turned my head just in time before his dry lips could find my mouth and I yelped in protest. My mind was going blank and all I could do was try to struggle to get his hands off of me. I tried to bring my knee up to hit him in his groin but he quickly swung his hips to the side and in one smooth motion, flipped me onto the ground. His weight on top of me was crushing me and I couldn't breathe. I broke my arm free and raked my nails across his face as hard as I could. He pulled back, grabbing his face and I could see small droplets of blood dripping down his cheek.
"You f*****g b***h!" he screamed. His free hand reared backwards and he backhanded me on my cheek. My eye and cheekbone instantly felt like they were going to explode and I saw stars. "Now, I'm not gonna play so nice." His eyes had turned to black orbs and his canines had come down. His knee pushed between my thighs and he reached down to the buckle on his belt. I was trying to buck him off me but it was no use. His body dwarfed mine and I couldn't move his bulk. I could hear my wolf in my head, snarling, but my mind would not connect to her. My mind couldn't connect to anything in that second. Other than the fear of what was happening to me. Tears were streaking down my face into my hair and I was trying to scream but no sound would come out. I could feel his length against my core and he adjusted himself in front of my opening. In one swift thrust, he pushed into me and a scream finally tore from my throat at the painful invasion.
His eyes were wild now and as he thrusted, his canines clamped down on my shoulder. I screamed out again and his vice like grip clamped down on my throat to silence me. He bit at my lips and grunted while he continued his onslaught. Finally, with a groan, he spilled himself into me, shattering my last shred of innocence. He lifted himself off me and zipped his pants. As he walked toward the cell door, buckling his pants, he looked back over his shoulder at me. "See you tomorrow, darlin" he laughed as he walked back up the stairs to the Dining hall.
I don't know how long I laid there on that cold cement floor. A thousand years could have passed. I vaguely remember the sunlight hitting the bars and seeing the specks of dust floating around the room in the rays from my eye that wasn't swollen shut. I heard light footsteps gently walk down the corridor of cells and some whispers. All I could do was close my eyes and turn my head away. I must have slept. Or passed out. The shock to my body was just too much. I awoke in the darkness, still lying in the same spot. In the corner, there was a soft pallet laid out with a blanket that wasn't there before and next to it, a large bucket of water, towels and a change of clothes. A tray of food and water was also laid out for me.
Ever so gently, I raised myself off the floor. My body was so fragile, it felt like splintering. I walked to the bucket and towels and began to gingerly wash the dried, caked blood off of me. I winced as I brought the damp towel between my legs. My hands shook as I cleaned away the evidence of my assault. I could see the purple bruises formed on my legs and arms and could only imagine what the rest of me looked like. When I finished, I changed into the clothes left out for me. I was thankful for the clean underwear and bra as I slid them on and the baggy sweatpants and long sleeve t shirt were soft against my scraped elbows and back.
There was a soft rustle behind me from the stairwell and I jumped when I saw a shadow move.
"Are you okay Miss Jenna?" the soft voice asked me. The girl came slowly toward the bars and peered through hesitantly. "My name is Cadence. I worked in the pack preschool. I..I was one of the teachers there." She stopped talking as I stood there motionless, watching her. She waited and then began again. " They moved me here into the packhouse to House duty. When I heard you were down here, I had to make sure you were alright but when I saw you....." she trailed off, not knowing what she could possibly say.
"I remember you" I replied. My throat hurt as I uttered the words. "You were the teacher my mom hired when Mrs. Lattimer retired". I could see her face light up at the mention of my mom.
"Yes! I was! Your mom was such a sweet, lovely woman. She was an amazing Luna to our pack. All of the children adored her and loved when she would drop by for a visit."
It was like salt in a wound. Tears sprung to my eyes as my mother's last words to me came to my mind. "I love you, my baby girl". I couldn't help but look away as they spilled over onto my cheeks and I began to cry. The gut wrenching sobs took over and I fell to my knees, holding my face in my hands. All that had happened......my parents, my brothers, my pack....my innocence. In that moment, I wished for it to end. I wished Alpha Dean would have just killed me when he captured me. Cadence looked on as I continued to spiral down into my despair. "I'm so sorry Jenna...... I'll do whatever I can to make it better for you." she whispered.
The man standing in the cell down the corridor heaved a heavy sigh. He had listened to everything that had happened yesterday morning. He was sick with the memory of hearing Jenna's screams and the sounds of the abuse from the guard. He had mentally taken note of each detail of the guard when he later came down to check on him. Brayden knew he would get out at some point. He knew the Alpha would want to use him in his military and when he did, he would take revenge for the little girl down the hall.
