Chapter 7 The Shadow His Father Left Behind

996 Words
The first day in the Special Observation Class was anything but calm. Leon sat by the window. There was no noise here. No casual chatter. Only silence— And pressure. Six students. All A-rank or above. Subtle energy fluctuations lingered in the air. This wasn’t a place for nurturing prodigies. It was a place for monitoring variables. Lucas leaned back in his chair, studying him lazily. “I heard your father was A-rank too?” The tone was casual. But everyone in the room heard it. Leon’s fingers paused slightly. “Yes.” “And later lost control?” “That’s the official statement.” The air grew heavier. Ava sat across the room, saying nothing. But her gaze had clearly changed. Lucas continued, “I checked the records.” “After that incident, the surname ‘Black’ was marked red in the Council database.” “Danger-level.” If Ryan were here, he would’ve exploded. But Leon only replied calmly, “That was his matter.” Lucas chuckled. “Maybe.” — After morning classes ended— The academy system issued a notice. [Leon Black, report to the Administrative Tower.] The others exchanged subtle glances. Ava stood up. “I’ll go with you.” Leon glanced at her. “That’s not necessary.” “It is.” Her tone was firm. They walked side by side through the corridor. Long. Quiet. Ava spoke softly, “The Council doesn’t summon people without reason.” “Your evolution last night shook too many.” Leon asked, “Including you?” She paused briefly. “I just want to confirm something.” “That you’re not repeating what happened back then.” That sentence struck deeper than anything else. “You think I’ll lose control?” She didn’t answer. But her silence— Was an answer. — Top floor. Administrative Tower. The conference room doors slid open. The gray-haired man sat at the far end of a long table. He didn’t stand. “Leon Black.” His voice was steady. Authoritative. “Introduce yourself.” Leon stood straight. “Leon Black.” “Eighteen.” “Talent—Evolutionary.” The man’s eyes shifted slightly. “Evolutionary is not a category.” “It’s a result.” The air tightened. Ava remained by the door, silent. The man continued, “Do you know what your father attempted?” Leon’s gaze darkened. “Unauthorized operation.” “That is the public version.” The man tapped the table lightly. A projection flickered to life. A battle record from three years ago. Arthur Black stood before a collapsing defensive line. Energy spiraled out of control around him. But— The footage was cut. The final seconds were black. “The full record is missing,” the man said calmly. “But one thing is certain.” “He was attempting to break through the limits of talent.” The temperature in the room seemed to drop. Leon’s heartbeat thudded. “Break the limits?” “Talent cannot grow.” The man’s tone remained even. “That is the iron law.” “But Arthur didn’t believe it.” “And now—you don’t either.” Their eyes locked. For the first time— Leon felt true pressure. Not gravity. Not a domain. But authority. “I’m just getting stronger,” he said quietly. “That’s exactly the problem.” The man stood. “If talent can grow—” “Then the entire social structure collapses.” “Ranks lose meaning.” “Order fractures.” Leon suddenly understood. This wasn’t about him losing control. It was about them losing control. They didn’t fear his power. They feared the rules breaking. The man stepped closer. Less than a meter apart. “Will you accept Council monitoring?” “In exchange for protection.” Ava’s gaze tightened. It was an offer. And a chain. Leon remained silent for a few seconds. Then— “If I refuse?” The man answered calmly, “Then you will be classified as a potential threat.” The air pressed down again. A few seconds passed. Leon lifted his head. “I accept monitoring.” Ava exhaled faintly. But his next words froze her. “Not because of you.” “Because I’m not strong enough yet.” The gray-haired man’s eyes flickered. The boy hadn’t submitted. He had chosen timing. “Very well.” He turned away. “Observation Level remains A.” “Codename: Catalyst.” The doors slid shut. — Outside the tower. Ava finally spoke. “Why agree?” Leon looked toward the distant city spire. “Because if I fight them now—” “I lose.” She was silent. For the first time, she realized— He was more clear-headed than she’d thought. “Aren’t you afraid of ending up like your father?” Leon stopped walking. “If he truly tried to break the limit—” “Then he didn’t lose control.” “He just walked too far ahead.” The wind swept past. For the first time— Doubt flickered in Ava’s eyes. She had always believed in order. In rules. But now— They didn’t feel so unshakable. — Night. Rooftop. Lucas walked up beside Leon. “Got warned?” “Something like that.” Lucas smiled faintly. “Relax.” “All of us ‘anomalies’ are being watched.” “You’re not alone.” For the first time— The bond between them quietly formed. Leon looked at the city lights below. The system interface surfaced. [Failure Catalyst: 1%] He clenched his fist lightly. “If they’re afraid of the rules breaking—” “Then I’ll break them completely.” Far away, The gray-haired man watched through surveillance screens. “Arthur…” he murmured. “Your son is even more dangerous than you.” The screen went dark. The night deepened. And the storm— Was gathering in silence.
