Greer pats her shoulder one last time, harder than before, and moves up to Fergus. Sarah looks off into the woods, staring into the void between them until the trees blur into a charcoal mass on moonlit milk. Her vision refocuses. The trees turn from one mass of black to a batch of broken branches stretching towards the sky. They send thrilling chills through her body. From the corner of her eye, someone rides up next to her. Coren. She doesn’t turn her head. Coren cuts his eyes at Sarah, holding the reins in both hands. “Beautiful night out, isn’t it?” He raises a hand at the trees and stars, and his eyes flit past his surroundings, landing back towards her.
