The text haunted me all day.
`Contract offer sent. Welcome to the family, Mia.`
Family? With vampires?
Adrian was reading it over my shoulder again. He does that a lot now.
"See? I told you," he said, smug. "Break their rules, then they beg you to join."
"This isn't funny," I said. "What kind of contract?"
"The kind that pays well," he said. "And binds you to me legally. To the Council."
My stomach dropped. "Binds me how?"
"If I die, you die," he said simply. "If you betray me, you burn. Standard stuff."
"STANDARD STUFF?!"
He kissed my forehead. "Relax. You're not going anywhere."
At 8 PM, an email came. From `council.stary@gov.vamp`
Official. With a seal. And a PDF 30 pages long.
**CONTRACT TERMS:**
1. `Mia Carter` agrees to be bound to `Adrian Vance` for life.
2. `Mia Carter` will not disclose vampire existence to humans.
3. `Mia Carter` will update her status daily to the Council.
4. `Mia Carter` will receive protection, housing, and 50,000 per month.
5. Breach of contract = death.
"50,000 per month?!" I choked. "In what? Blood?"
"USD," Adrian said, pouring wine. For himself. "Told you I'd keep you rich."
I stared at the last page. Signature line.
And below it, in red: `Bite to Sign.`
"You're kidding," I said.
"Nope," Adrian said. He rolled up his sleeve. Showed me his wrist. "Bite here. Your blood on the paper. My blood in you. Contract sealed."
This was it. The point of no return.
Normal life. Gone.
Freedom. Gone.
But... safety. Money. Him.
"Are you sure?" I asked.
"About you? Yes," he said. "About the Council? No. But we'll deal with that together."
I took a shaky breath. Picked up the pen. Signed my name.
Then I leaned in and bit him.
His blood was cold. And sweet. And powerful.
The moment I swallowed, the paper glowed. The seal burned into my skin on my wrist.
A small crescent moon. Only visible to vampires.
"It's done," Adrian whispered. He looked dazed. "You're mine. Officially."
My phone buzzed.
Bank notification: `+50,000 USD received from COUNCIL OF THE NIGHT.`
I laughed. I couldn't help it. "I'm rich."
"You're mine," Adrian corrected. He pulled me onto his lap. "Say it."
"I'm yours," I whispered.
He groaned and kissed me. Deep. Like he was claiming me all over again.
When we broke apart, another email came in.
`Congratulations. Your first assignment: Find the leak in the Council. 7 days.`
Adrian read it and sighed. "Honeymoon is over."
"Good," I said, standing up. "Let's catch a traitor."
For the first time, I smiled at the danger.
Because I wasn't alone anymore.
