Chapter 10: The Leak

520 Words
"First assignment: Find the leak in the Council. 7 days." Adrian crumpled the email. "Of course they give us the impossible task first." I was still staring at the crescent moon on my wrist. It glowed faintly in the dark. "What happens if we fail?" I asked. "We die," Adrian said casually. "Me first. Then you." "Great. Love this job already." He pulled me into a hug. "We won't fail. Because we have each other." --- Day 1: We got the files. 12 Council members. All 300+ years old. All suspects. Selene was still in jail. So not her. "Someone is feeding info to the hunters," Adrian said. "About rogues. About us." Day 2: We followed Council Member #3. Lord Marcus. He met a hunter in a parking lot. But it was about taxes. Boring. Day 3: Council Member #7. Lady Vexa. She was cheating on her husband. With another vampire. Not a leak. Just messy. Day 4: Nothing. I was going crazy. Adrian noticed. "You need to feed," he said. "I don't drink blood!" "You don't have to. But you need me." He held out his wrist. "Just a little. For strength." I hated that I wanted to. I bit. Just a sip. Instantly my head cleared. My senses sharpened. I could hear people 3 houses down. "Whoa," I breathed. "Told you," Adrian said, licking the wound. "You're part of this now." Day 5: Breakthrough. We hacked Council emails. Stupid, but it worked. One email. Sent at 3 AM. To an unknown address. `The rogue Adrian Vance has a human. Marked. Location: 14 Rue Night, Apt 4B.` My address. Sent by... Council Member #11. Elder Dorian. "That old man?" I said. "He can barely walk." "He's the smartest one," Adrian said. "And the greediest." Day 6: We set a trap. I sent an email from a fake account. `Adrian will be alone at the docks. 12 AM. Come get him.` Then we waited. In the dark. On the roof. At 11:55 PM, Dorian showed up. With 6 hunters. "Caught you," Adrian said, dropping down behind him. Dorian didn't even look scared. He smiled. "Took you long enough." He pulled out a dagger. Silver. "I'm not the leak," he said. "I'm the bait. The real leak is..." He didn't finish. An arrow came from nowhere. Silver. Straight through his heart. Dorian dropped. Dead. Adrian tackled me to the ground. "Sniper!" Bullets. Arrows. Everything. We ran. Through alleys. Over fences. I shot one hunter with a gun Adrian gave me. I didn't even flinch. When we got home, both of us were shaking. "Who killed him?" I asked. "Someone who didn't want us to know who the real leak is," Adrian said. He looked at me. Dead serious. "The leak is still in the Council. And now they know we're close." My phone buzzed. New email. `5 days left. Nice try. Next time, we take the girl.` Adrian pulled me close. "Don't worry." "I'm not," I said. And I meant it. "Because we have 5 days to find them. Together." He kissed me. Hard. "Then we start tomorrow." [TO BE CONTINUED...]
