`5 days left. Nice try. Next time, we take the girl.`
I slept with a knife under my pillow that night.
Adrian didn't sleep at all. He watched the door. The windows. Me.
"You should rest," I whispered at 3 AM.
"I am resting," he said. "With my eyes open."
Day 1 of the countdown started.
We went back to the files. 11 Council members left.
"Elder Dorian is dead," Adrian said. "So the leak is either very smart, or very lucky."
"Or both," I added.
We made a list. Suspect Number 1: Lady Vexa.
Why? Because she was at the club the night Selene attacked us. And she left 5 minutes before the fight started.
"Let's pay her a visit," Adrian said.
Lady Vexa's house was a mansion. All white. All creepy.
She opened the door herself. In a silk robe.
"Adrian," she purred. "And the human pet. To what do I owe this pleasure?"
"Cut the crap," Adrian said. "Where were you last night at 12 AM?"
"With my lover," she said. "Who, might I add, is not my husband."
She let us in.
The house smelled like blood and perfume.
"I didn't send that email," she said, pouring us wine. "But I know who did."
I sat up. "Who?"
"Someone who hates you," she said, looking at Adrian. "Someone old. Someone who thinks you're a disgrace to our kind."
"Name," Adrian growled.
"Elder Thorne," she whispered. "He's been missing for 50 years. Presumed dead. But he's not."
The lights flickered.
And then every window shattered.
Hunters. 12 of them. Rappelling down from the roof.
Vexa screamed and vanished into a shadow.
Adrian grabbed my hand. "Run!"
We fought our way out. I shot 2. Adrian took down 5.
But there were too many.
One hunter grabbed me. Silver knife to my throat.
"Drop your weapons, Vance," he said. "Or she dies."
Adrian froze. "Let her go."
"Not until you come with us."
I looked at Adrian. And I nodded.
It was okay. I trusted him.
But before he could move, Vexa came back.
She didn't help us. She stabbed the hunter in the back.
"You're welcome," she said, licking the blood off her blade. "I do hate Thorne more than I hate you."
We ran.
In the car, I was shaking. Again.
"Thorne," Adrian said. "He's the one. He was my mentor. 200 years ago."
"Why would he do this?"
"Because I left," Adrian said. "Because I chose to live like a human. He thinks I'm weak."
My phone buzzed.
`4 days left. Good job finding Vexa. Wrong suspect though. Keep guessing.`
Attached: A photo. Of me. Sleeping. Taken last night.
Adrian saw it and his fangs came out. "He was in our house."
"He's watching us," I said.
Adrian pulled over. Looked at me. Really looked.
"I'm sorry I dragged you into this."
"Don't be," I said. "I chose this. I chose you."
He kissed me. Desperate. Like it was the last time.
"We have 4 days," he said. "To kill a 400 year old vampire."
I smiled. "Then we'd better start training."
