Chapter 3: Vampire Hunter

"Choose, Mia. Now." Bang. Bang. Bang. The door was shaking on its hinges. Adrian was still holding me. His body was cold, but his grip was warm. Protective. "Who are you?" I whispered. "Later," he hissed. "Answer them." I took a shaky breath and yelled, "Who is it?" "Stary Security! We got reports of illegal subletting. Open the door!" Illegal subletting? Right. Adrian's eyes flicked to the door, then back to me. He mouthed one word: `Lie.` I nodded. "Just a second!" I called out, trying to sound normal. "I'm in pajamas!" Adrian let go of me and vanished. Literally. One second he was there, next second he was a shadow in the corner. I opened the door. Two men in black suits. Sunglasses. Earpieces. They looked nothing like normal security. One of them sniffed the air and stared right past me. Into the apartment. "Is anyone else here?" he asked. "Just me," I said, hugging myself. "And my roommate. He's... sleeping." "Name?" "Adrian Vance." The second man typed on a tablet. His face changed. "Adrian Vance. Age 32. Works night shift. No criminal record." He looked up. "Mind if we check?" My blood ran cold. Looking human. Tired. Normal. The first hunter's eyes narrowed. "Sir, we need to scan the apartment." "For what?" Adrian asked, annoyed. He put an arm around me. Possessive. "It's 6 AM. My girlfriend and I were sleeping." Girlfriend? I didn't correct him. The scanner beeped. Once. Twice. Green light. The hunter frowned. "That's weird." "What?" I asked, heart in my throat. "Nothing," he said. "Have a good day." They left. The second they were gone, Adrian pulled me inside and slammed the door. He pushed me against it. "You did good," he whispered against my neck. His breath was cold. "But they will be back." "Why were they looking for you?" "Because I am not registered," he said. "I am old. Very old. And the Council doesn't like rogues." He pulled back and looked at me. Really looked at me. "Rule number 4 still stands. Stay. Be mine. Or they take you too. Because now they think you're with me." I swallowed. "What happens if I say yes?" "I bite you," he said simply. "Not to kill. To mark. To protect. And you will never be hungry, or cold, or scared again." "And if I say no?" He smiled. But it was sad. "Then I have to let you go. And pray the hunters don't find you first." Outside the window, the sun was fully up now. And in the distance... I saw a black van. Watching our building. Adrian saw it too. "Time's up, Mia," he said. "Choose." [TO BE CONTINUED...]
