`We have your sister. Come alone. Or she dies.`
I stared at the text. "I don't have a sister."
"I know," Adrian said. His jaw was tight. "It's a trap."
"Then why send it?"
"To get you to come alone." He looked at me. "And to see if you panic."
I didn't panic. I got angry.
"Where do we meet them?"
"Abandoned warehouse. Dock 17," Adrian said. "I'm coming with you."
"No," I said. "If I bring you, they kill whoever's there. If I go alone... maybe it's a bluff."
Adrian grabbed my shoulders. "Absolutely not."
"Adrian," I said. "Trust me."
He hated it. But he agreed. On one condition.
"If you're not out in 10 minutes, I'm burning the whole place down."
---
The warehouse smelled like rust and seawater.
One light. One chair. One girl tied to it.
Blonde. My age. My eyes.
"Who are you?" I whispered.
The girl looked up. She smiled. "Hi, sis."
The doors slammed shut behind me.
Selene walked out from the shadows. Clapping.
"Bravo. You came alone. Stupid, but brave."
"Who is she?" I demanded.
"A nobody," Selene said. "A human we glamoured to look like you. To test you."
The fake me whimpered. "Please don't hurt me."
"She's innocent," I said.
"She's bait," Selene corrected. "And you walked right into it."
10 vampires appeared. Same ones from the club.
"Last chance, Adrian's little pet," Selene said. "Join us. Or watch her die. Then you."
I looked at the fake sister. She was crying.
Something in me snapped.
I picked up a metal pipe from the floor.
"You picked the wrong girl," I said.
The fight was messy. I wasn't Adrian.
I got hit. I got cut. But I didn't stop.
I freed the fake girl first. Pushed her toward the door.
"Run!"
Then I turned and swung.
When Adrian burst in 8 minutes later, 4 vampires were down.
And I was standing over Selene with the pipe to her throat.
"Move and I crack her skull," I said. My voice didn't even shake.
Adrian stared at me. Then he smiled. Slow. Proud. Terrifying.
"That's my girl."
Selene laughed. "You think you won? The Council will never accept her."
"They already did," Adrian said. He pulled out his phone. Showed her a video.
It was us. On the roof. Kissing. With the Council seal in the background.
"Bound. By law. By blood. By me."
Selene's face fell.
We left her there. Tied up. For the Council to deal with.
In the car, I was shaking. Adrenaline crash.
Adrian pulled me into his lap. Ignored the driver seat.
"You're bleeding," he said, touching my arm.
"It's nothing."
"It's not nothing to me."
He licked the cut. It stopped hurting instantly.
"Why did you do that?" he asked. "Go in alone?"
"Because I had to," I said. "Because I'm not just yours to protect anymore. I'm part of this too."
He kissed me. Forehead. Nose. Lips.
"Okay," he whispered. "Then we fight together."
My phone buzzed again. New number.
Text: `Well done. The Council is impressed. Contract offer sent. Welcome to the family, Mia.`
Adrian saw it and laughed. "Told you. We break rules. Then they give us trophies."
I leaned into him. "So... I'm officially a vampire's girlfriend now?"
"And more," he said. "You're mine. In every way."
Outside, the sun was rising.
And for the first time, I wasn't scared of it.
