I woke up to Adrian making coffee.
A vampire. Making coffee. That he can't drink.
"Morning," he said without turning. "Sleep well?"
"With a vampire in my bed? Surprisingly yes," I said, sitting up.
The bite mark on my neck tingled. When I touched it in the mirror, it was almost gone. Just two tiny dots.
"Is this permanent?" I asked.
"No," Adrian said, handing me a mug. "But the connection is. I can feel if you're scared. Or hurt. Or..." He trailed off.
"Or what?"
"Or lying to me."
My phone buzzed. Group chat from work. `MIA WHERE ARE YOU? 3 DAYS NO SHOW.`
Crap. I forgot I had a job.
"I need to go to work," I said.
Adrian's face went blank. "No."
"Excuse me?"
"You are now involved with the Council. It's not safe. Not until we know who sent that van."
I stared at him. "You don't get to tell me what to do."
"I do now," he said quietly. "Because if anything happens to you, I die too. Remember?"
We fought for 20 minutes.
I won. I stormed out.
Big mistake.
I only made it to the bus stop.
The black van was there. Waiting.
Two hunters got out. Not the ones from before. New ones.
"Miss Carter," one said. "The Council requests your presence. Again."
"I'm not going," I said, backing away.
"Then we take you."
They grabbed my arms.
Before I could scream, a blur.
Adrian.
He didn't say anything. He just moved. Fast. Too fast to see.
When it was over, both hunters were on the ground. Unconscious.
"Are you okay?" he asked, pulling me into him.
"Y-yeah," I stammered. "You just... you just did that."
"I told you not to go," he said. But he was hugging me tight. Shaking. "Don't scare me like that again."
I nodded against his chest.
"Now," he said, pulling back. "We do this my way. You quit your job. You stay home. And we figure out who wants us dead."
I wanted to argue. But after seeing what he did...
"Fine," I whispered. "But you're teaching me how to fight."
Adrian actually smiled. "Deal."
That night, he started training me.
Self defense. How to run. How to hide.
And one more thing.
"How to bite," he said, showing me his fangs. "In case you need to."
"I can't bite people!"
"You might have to," he said seriously. "To survive."
At 2 AM, we were both exhausted. Sweaty. Laughing on the floor.
"You're not like other vampires," I said.
"You're not like other humans," he replied.
He leaned in. Kissed my forehead.
"Sleep," he said. "Tomorrow, we find out who sent the van."
I fell asleep holding his hand.
I had a feeling normal was never coming back.
