Celine woke up to the sound of heavy rain drops smacking at her windows and pots clanging together outside her bedroom door.
"Get up Get up Get up Get up" Her mothers voice hollered outside of her room.
Throwing the heavy blanket around her body off, Celine threw her legs around the side of her bed before making a beeline toward the bathroom.
Celine looked into the mirror and she knew straight away it was going to be a bad day.
The bags under her eyes were as dark as her raven hair and her hair was as frizzy as a birds nest.
Sighing she brushed her teeth and took her clothes off before jumping into the shower. Turning on the water she let it soak all of her.
Celine loved the feeling of standing under the shower head. She loves the feeling of being surrounded by the water, she liked thinking that the water was making a protective layer around her skin, shielding her away from all things bad.
But, she knew in the end when she turned the shower head off the protective layer of water covering her body will be gone, that she'll be left bare with her skin and she's fine with that.
Celine knew that she had a little to every worry about, she was pretty, smart, kind and athletic. She also had a family that loved her dearly. The worst problem she's ever had was telling her parents about one bad grade (which they were ultimately alright with) or how her name sounded too much like sea lion.
Stepping out of the shower she dried herself before dressing herself.
She opened the door of her room heading towards the dinning room, her uggs slapping against the hardwood.
The sight that greeted her only confirmed her earlier suspicion of today being a bad day.
"Dad's making breakfast today?" She asked hoping that the horror didn't show through her voice.
Unfortunately, it did and her brother seemed to notice.
"Alex you heard that right? You heard the tremble in Celines voice?" Celine's brother asked slapping his knees through the laughter from his place at the table.
Alex simply nodded her head beside Beckett.
Alex and Celine had a complicated relationship, Celine didn't like the fact that Alex wanted to be her little sister instead of her little brother. It had caused a huge fight between the two, at one point they wouldn't even talk to each other and if they did they would be fighting. But in the end they realized they were going to have to live together under the same roof until Celine graduated. So instead they decided to never address the other unless necessary and the encounters were very awkward. Celine thought it was weird and unnatural to change genders. She doesn't get why you can't be comfortable as what you were born as.
"Oh stop! My food isn't that bad!" Celines father hollered from the kitchen.
Celine, taking this as the opportunity to get out of the awkwardness, replied with a loud yell: "And I'm Ed Sheeran's wife dad. We all wish we were things we aren't".
She hoped no one but Alex realized the slight jab she was sending toward her. And her prayers were answered to when Celine saw Alex slightly wince and no one make a comment.
Smirking slightly, Celine decided that this should be enough for her to get through her day, after all the worst that would probably happen to her is being called out by the teacher.
An ugly charcoal-like smell met her nose cutting her thoughts off. Sniffing the air Celine realized that her fathers cooking is going no where, calling out to her dad she said: " I'm going to eat breakfast at McDee's. Sorry dad love you but I need to get to school. Goodbye!".
"Alright I get it you don't want my food, but take Alex and Beck with you" He hollered back as a reply.
Groaning in her head, Celine sighed before waving at her brothers to get in the car.
Once they were all settled in the car, Celine turned up the radio allowing music to flow around them instead of an awkward silence. Bobbing her head to the music Celine swiftly backed out of the park way and drove to the fast food restaurant in 3 minutes. Ordering a couple of nuggets for herself and a McMuffin for each of her her siblings.
It took her 15 minutes to drop Alex of at school before making her way to Springview High. A few minutes after leaving the middle school Celine looked over to the console of her mustang, to see her phone vibrating.
The caller ID, not an unfamiliar name on her phone.
Sighing, she signaled Becket to pick up her for and answer the call. at a red light and answered the call before placing it back on her console.
"What's up baby girl?!" Celine yelled.
But all she got in reply was a weak whimper from the other side of her phone.
Celine suddenly alerted, sat up straight, before pulling over her car to the side of the road. If it was any other person Celine wouldn't have pulled over, but this was her best friend Ivy and she hasn't seen her best friend cry ever, not even when her boyfriend of a year cheated on her, Ivy like Celine had nothing to cry over other than that one incident.
"Ivy what happened?" Celine asked ignoring her brother annoyed cries.
She heard the voice at the other line suck in exactly 4 harsh breath before stuttering out an answer.
Celine froze and dropped her phone, for a second she felt like an actor from a movie doing a scene, except she was actually living it. That one scene where the actors eyes widen and jaw drops, the scene where they freeze from shock trying their best to contemplate what exactly happened, the scene where they were given either the best news ever or the worst news ever. To Celine it was unfortunately the latter.
Celine laid her head against her car steering wheel, the words Ivy said being repeated again and again in her head.
Aubrie Rivers is dead.
* * *
Aubrie Rivers wasn't Celine's best friend, in fact if you asked Celine they weren't even friends. She was Celine's boyfriends sister. They were just acquaintances who entertained each other in AP Bio. Or as Celine and Aubrie called it the lifeless class of life.
But as the words kept repeating in Celines head someone shook her shoulder harshly, alarmed Celine turned her head to see a wide-eyed Becket.
"Everything alright?" He asked his voice carrying a worried tone.
Taking a deep breath Celine shook her head before turning back her head and picking her phone up.
"You still there?" Celine said into her voice sounding fragile to herself. She was met with silence. Celine sighed before pulling her car out of the side walk and driving back home. Celine thought about the memories she shared with Aubrie. Aubrie was not someone who seemed liked she'd kill herself Celine recalled the saying "Its always the ones you don't expect ". Celine didn't know what to do, she couldn't cry over her considering the fact that they weren't close friends, and she can't be happy either considering the fact that someone she knew died, not that she could even if she tried but still.
Celine was cut out of her thoughts when Becket roughly shoved her shoulder causing her to lose her control on her car. Letting out a strangled grunt Celine stopped at a red light before turning her head around hardly and addressing her brother ."Whats your problem?!" she practically grunted out.
"Can you tell me why we aren't going to school right now?!" He replied back with just as much harshness. Celine sighed realizing it was her fault, she turned back around to face the front and started driving when she spotted the red light was now green.
"Aubrie Rivers killed herself" She muttered for the first time ever slowly, the words sounding foreign in her mouth, leaving a sort of ugly taste in it.
"What did you say?" Her brother asked, his annoyed tone conveyed clearly.
Suddenly Celine felt some kind of skyrocketing madness in herself.
"AUDRIE RIVERS KILLED HERSELF!!" She yelled.
"What?! Someone from school killed themselves?! Do you know her? Are you friends? How does she look?..." Questions flowed out of Becket like a tsunami, each question choking Celine slowly.
"Not now Becket." She said in a calmer tone. "I'm still trying to process it" she explained.
Becket mumbled a short 'okay' to her before staring back out the window.
Celine and Becket got back home a few minutes later.
Celine got out of her car, picking up her messenger bag before slamming the door of her car shut.
She strolled towards her front door with Becket behind her. As soon as she opened her front door she was met with her parents questioning gaze. She knew what her mother was gonna say before she said it:
"If you think I'm gonna let you stay at home just because you were partying all night you better think otherwise Celine"
Celine let out a deep breath looking at her mother with exhausted eyes. She closed her eyes for a quick millisecond, before answering her mother.
"A girl from school killed herself mom, and the school obviously wouldn't just go on with the day after that. They aren't gonna say the pledge, have a moment of silence and the let the day go on as it is mom. That's not how it works, and maybe if you checked your emails like a responsible parent you would've known that you would've realized my boyfriend sister killed herself, instead you were banging pots and yelling the same phrase over and over again like a broken record, IF you had done your ONE job right I wouldn't have had to find out about what happened from Ivy, I wouldn't have had to drive home not being able to CONCENTRATE on the road because I was worried about my boyfriends well being, if you had just done the ONE thing you are asked to do then I wouldn't have FORGOTTEN ALEX."
Celine didn't intend for her voice to raise at the end, neither did she intend to forget Alex but she did.
"I'm sorry mom, I'm just super stressed right now and don't know how to react to it. Ill just go and pick up Alex now" Celine said, her hung low from exhaustion.
"Wait." Her mothers voice stopped her. "It's fine your just in shock. Why don't you go to your room and take a rest while I go and pick up Alex, I'll have to take your car though because dad has to get to work and he's taking the car. Also if you want you can ask dad to ask the other officers about the girl" Her mother said in a reassuring tone.
Celine felt the guilt wash over her like a tsunami, here she was yelling at her mother for asking a question every other parent would while her mother ignored the fact that she not only partied on a school night but forgot her sibling at school.
"I'm so sorry mother" Celine apologized. " I'm acting like a total diva brat right now. I'll make it up one day but right now I just want to go and take a nap."
"It's fine Celine, this must be weird for you considering you've never actually known someone who died. Say was the girl a close friend of yours?" Her mother inquired.
"Not exactly we talked in Bio, Richard was really weird about me and her interacting , but its just weird you know. Like I can't actually believe she's gone."
"Okay I get it, now both of you got your rooms" Her mother said as she slid past Celine grabbing the car keys on the way.
Slouching Celine walked towards her room, more confused than when she was in Bio class. The house was quieter than it had ever been before, Celine could here the sounds her Uggs made as she stepped, the clinging her bracelets made and if she didn't know any better she would've said she could hear her hair swishing back and forth. Celine knew this was just her mind way of diverting itself from the complicated issue at hand, she knew it because she did it all the time the only difference now was that she was trying to distract her thoughts from an acquaintance's suicide and not some test she knew she was gonna get at least a B on.
Shoving the door of her room Celine plopped down onto her bed, cocooning herself in her layers of blankets.
She didn't know what to do now, she can't watch television because thats inconsiderate, and she can't study because that's also inconsiderate and even if it wasn't she probably won't concentrate on it.
Faint sounds of gun shots, bombings and people yelling had come into her room, her brother probably started playing video games. The sound of the gunshots got her thinking about how Aubrie killed herself.
Did she shot herself? Maybe she cut herself or hung herself
The image of Aubrie on her tippy toes with a chair beneath her and a noose in front of her pale face conjured up in Celines mind. Celine imagined Aubries face being inserted in the noose, she saw Aubrie trip of the chair and all of a sudden she was hanging in the air her feet shaking as she struggled against the rugged rope, Aubries neck starts bleeding and tears started fallout of her eyes everything was happening so fast and then all of sudden she stopped, her body moved a like it was being tugged at, and then all of a sudden she stopped moving completely and was just swinging around with clear and red liquid dripping to the floor.
Celine gasped for air, the image had come up into her mind so realistically almost as if it was happening right in front of her. She felt a dry salty feeling on her cheeks a sign that she had been crying, she sniffed up some ugly snot that had come out of her mouth and cleared her voice before yelling at her brother to turn that nasty game off. Her brother obliged surprisingly, probably because mom was on her side.
Celine sighed, she thought she was pathetic, crying over a mere acquaintance and being scared of suicide scenes which she's probably seen before in a bunch movies. Suddenly Celine had a light bulb moment, she grabbed her laptop and placed it up before doing the one thing every other kid her age knew how to do googling. Typing How to get over a randos suicide into the search engine, Celine looked at a few choices that came up, most of them were links to a therapist or suicide hot line, just when she was about to give up Celine stumbled across a website that seemed like what she was looking for.
Taking a breath she clicked on the link and watched its okay to feel guilty came up in big bold red words on her screen. Just as she was about to read through it her door banged open and her mother came storming in. Celine closed her laptop and put it to the side as fast as she could and looked up at her mother with curious eyes.
"Hey there baby I just wanted you to know that it's okay to take a bit time off as someone from school just died but I want you to study and make this day productive, since your partying on the weekends why don't you study now for all your exams. Maybe take a moment of silence for the girl but get going, it seems you already cried for her why don't you build a bridge and get over it?" Her mother asked.
"I will mother and thank you for being so considerate about this I don't even know why I'm crying I barley knew the girl at all, maybe a moment of silence is what I need to think about the girl and appreciate her." Celine stated, confused as to why this hadn't come up to her already.
"Of course, baby girl I'll be right downstairs if you need me" Her mother said before leaving the room.
That is when Celine realized that she was right, it was a bad day.
