I slowly opened my eyes. I blinked a few times to get my eyes to adjust. I was face to face with Grayson. He actually looked…concerned? His eyes roamed around my face. I know he wasn’t looking at me in any way other than alarm but I still almost blushed.
“How do you feel?” he asked.
I opened my mouth, but no words came out.
“You should probably go see the nurse.”
I shook my head.
I didn’t want to be asked any questions. I didn’t want to talk about anything that just happened.
“How long was I out?” My voice finally worked.
“Five minutes.”
I nodded.
Grayson stood up then held his hand out to me. He helped pull me to my feet. I swayed just a bit due to a headrush. Grayson grabbed a hold of my shoulders and eyed me.
“I’m fine,” I reassured.
Grayson continued to stare at me in disbelief.
“I really am.”
He let go of my shoulders. I followed behind him out the front doors. I had to jog just to keep up with him. He must’ve noticed because he slowed his pace. I was able to keep up with him now.
Grayson led us to his car. I quickly got into the passenger seat. We didn’t speak in the car. Not surprising. I kept my attention out the front window and wondered where we were going. I looked over at Grayson every so often. He focused on the road ahead.
“Why do you keep looking at me?”
I gulped. I didn’t realize he noticed. “I’m just wondering where were going.”
“Food.”
“Food?”
“Yes, food. Meat. Fruit. Vegetables. Food.”
I glared at him. “You don’t have to be a jerk about it.”
Grayson chuckled. “I’m not being a jerk. I’m simply explaining.”
I rolled my eyes. It sounded more like him being a smart ass about it. I sulked in my seat. Grayson was a good-looking guy, but his attitude and stubbornness made it really hard to like him.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to make you upset,” Grayson said.
I was taken aback. I never thought that Grayson Mitchell would apologize. Ever.
“You don’t need to apologize,” I said.
Grayson smoothly pulled the car into a small shopping center. We had pulled up to the same diner that Grayson and I had went to the first night we met.
It brought back a flashback of that night. A wave of panic hit me. Grayson got out of the car and I followed behind him. Thankfully he didn’t go to the same booth as last time. He didn’t even look at a menu. As soon as the waitress came around, he ordered his food.
“I’ll have the same,” I told the waitress.
“You don’t want something else?” He asked once the waitress left.
I shook my head. “I’m not that hungry.”
“You need to eat.”
“Need?”
He gave me a flat look. “You fainted. You should drink water and eat a little bit.”
“You sound like my dad.”
“Your dad sounds like a smart guy then.”
I glared at him.
It didn’t take long for the waitress to come back with our food. There was hardly anyone here on a Wednesday at eleven o’clock in the morning.
We ate our food in silence. Well, Grayson ate, and I slowly nibbled at mine. I ate about half the burger before I decided to put it down. I didn’t touch the fries, but I drank all of my water.
“What happened?” He asked.
“I fainted.”
“I know you fainted. Why do you think you fainted?”
“I don’t know. I guess I was in shock about Ms. Alvarado.”
“You said something earlier.”
I really wished I had more water. My throat was dry and was getting worse as Grayson asked me more and more questions.
He didn’t waiver and he didn’t take his eyes off me. He would continue to stare at me until I gave an answer.
“I did?” it was probably better to play dumb. I stared down at the table. I was afraid that if I looked at him, I just might tell him what exactly happened.
“You whispered something,” he pressed.
I gathered enough nerves to look at him. “I don’t remember then.”
Grayson was skeptical. I was now skeptical. i was still trying to process everything that happened. Grayson knew I wasn’t going to say any more about the matter. He called the waitress over to pay for the bill. I tried to give him some money, but he refused.
“You can buy me lunch next time.”
Next time?
There was going to be a next time?
I got excited at the thought of hanging out with Grayson again. I liked him half the time and the other half, I found him irritating.
“I should take you home,” he said.
In the car, it was complete silence. Grayson parked the car in front of my house. He asked for my cell phone and punched some numbers in. He handed the phone back to me.
“Text me if you need anything.”
I couldn’t even say anything. I just smiled as I got out of the car.
Grayson waited until I was in the house before leaving. I made it about three steps in when Paul bombarded me.
“Who was that?” he asked.
“A friend.”
“Why are you out of school so early?”
“It’s Wednesday. Early out day.” I pushed past him to head up to my room.
“I don’t remember there ever being early out days.”
“it’s new this year.”
Paul followed me as I made my way to my room. “Then why didn’t you get out early last Wednesday?”
“I have to do homework.” I locked my bedroom door.
I glanced down at the phone in my hands. I felt giddy knowing I had Grayson’s number in my phone.
