/6/ THE PROMISE

Venus eventually closed her eyes and brought her face closer to his. She wanted him to claim her lips. He just did that.  As he moved towards her, she felt his breath upon her face. Though she was scared as she never had contact of such sort with anyone before, it was alright since it was Adonis (her soon to be husband), she believed. The more closer he got, the more her eyelids fluttered. Ba-dump. Ba-dump.Her heartbeat was skyrocketing. ‘I can do this. He will soon be my husband, anyways.’ She assumed.   To her surprise, he caressed her face gently and spoke, "You must return home now, Venus."  He sensed from her tense posture and shivering lips that she was nervous. Therefore, he decided to be patient with her and give her some time to get comfortable with him. Venus glimmered as she gave her hand to him. She definitely admired the man who believd in the concept of consent. Shortly, he dropped her to her house.  When it was finally time to part, Adonis was reluctant to do so. He wanted to spend more quality time with her, but she didn't wish to become a hindrance in his work. As he waas the Alpha, there was not one single minute that he could spare on leisure activities, including meeting Venus. Nevertheless, she was hurt that he didn't kiss her when she permitted her. But, the reality was that he realised that she wasn't comfortable with it.  As he smiled and moved away to take his leave, Venus tugged his sleeve. He turned to look at her timid smile.  "A… Adonis. I want to…" Before she could complete her sentence, Adonis peered into her eyes and realised what she wanted him to do. He held her through her waist and pulled her in for a warm embrace. Consequently, she closed her eyes, and he brought his face closer to hers.  As their lips touched each other's, Venus clenched his shirt with her fingers. The peppermint smell of his mouth intertwined with the sound of his heartbeat pacing made her passionate feelings ignite for him. She was twenty-two years old, and the handsomest hunk of their town, the alpha was going to be her husband. Just when he let go of her, she huffed heavily and then rushed back inside her house, appearing embarrassed. Adonis chuckled to see her reaction, brushed his long strand of curls back and waddled back to his home.  Later that evening, Venus moved over to her window to perform her evening prayer. While glancing at the moon goddess, she divulged, "I never ask for anything. I want to repeat the same request that I have been wishing on for several years. Moon Goddess Lana, even if I were to die tomorrow, make sure that I die in Adonis' arms."  She fell on her knees and joined her hands. The moon's pale light fell on her hopeful face.  "This life. Next life. Every life, I want him to be mine."  Venus then got back on her feet and moved over to her bed to get a good night sleep. As she closed her eyes, the whole thing that happened in the evening replayed in her head.  "Oh God, it was embarrassing." She calls it a night with that one remark and goes back to sleep.  The next morning, Venus woke up, brushed and bathed. As she got out of the shower, she hurried to get changed. Soon after, she reached the library and worked her early day shift. In the afternoon, she went to the training grounds. There, she waited for Dimitri to show up, but she was disappointed as he didn't come. Therefore, she decided on training alone. Soon, the dates on the calendar changed fast. Venus, on the othe hand, kept practising swordsmanship and spent her whole week before her marriage working on herself alone as Dimitri never returned. Days went by quick, and it was finally the last day before the marriage.  Usually, a bachelorette is held in the honour of the groom-to-be/ bride-to-be by their friends. Since Venus had no friends, she spent her day alone in her house after working and training. Later in  the eveningns, she used to help her parents by doing chores around the house. Contrarily in Adonis' mansion, there was a huge feast which was prepared in honour of his bachelorette. Wolves from across towns came to pay their respect to him, and form allegiance with the man. He was known as the one undefeated leader who had won thousands of wars. Naturally, everyone was attracted to him because of his strength and power. After the dawn, Adonis grew extremely restless. His Beta, Jonah observed his anxiousness and asked, "Is everything okay? You don't look too well." "No, everything's just fine. It's just there are a lot of people. It is getting kind of exhausting to deal with everyone," Adonis declared.  Jonah snickered as he remarked, "Is it the presence of these people, or the absence of someone in particular which troubles you?"  Adonis was indeed saddened by the fact that he hadn't been able to spend time with Venus through the whole day. Adonis could no longer pull off pretences. Hence, he thought about confiding in Jonah with the truth. "I miss her. Though I will see her tomorrow, I want to be with her right now."  Jonah couldn't believe his ears. The man, who was known to keep his calm even in the most intense wars, was freaking out over a woman.  "Why don't you go to her place then?"  Adonis sighed as he stated, "All these people have accumulated here because of me. It wouldn't make sense if I'm not even here." Jonah tittered as he turned Adonis' gaze over to the people, who seemed to be enjoying themselves on their own.  "You have been here for the whole evening. I think it wouldn't hurt anybody's sentiments if you leave to spend some time with your bride-to-be."  "Well, in that case, I'm leaving." Adonis' hopped out of his chair and rushed towards his horse. Jonah got to the platform upon which Adonis had been sitting, and announced to disperse the crowd.  Adonis, in a gay mood, rode off on the horse's back to get to his beloved Venus.  Venus lied in her bed with her eyes shut. She was invariably hurt that Dimitri stopped showing up for their training, but was also worried for his well-being.  Since Venus was dreadful over his absence, she couldn't help but complain, "He could've told me if I wasn't doing well at the training, but disappearing without a tinge wasn't right."  "Who could've told you what?" The voice disrupted her train of thought. She popped out of her bed quickly to glare at the beautiful man standing in front of her.  It was Adonis. His azure eyes glazed in the moonlight while his fascinating long curls drifted in the direction of the wind. As he peered at her startled face, she grew undeniably uneasy.   She asked him to sit on the bed beside her, and then spoke, "You could've come through the door. Why did you decide on the window? It is not safe to do so."  Adonis was contended to see her caring for him.  "I wanted to experience the pain of those lovers who love each other, but due to some external forces aren't able to meet each other in the presence of other people. Moreover, It feels more idealistic to climb up the window of my love. Isn't this what the knights do in pastoral romances?"   Venus smiled as he tried harder to ease the tense atmosphere built between them.   “Sir, you do know how to practise humour. That’s quite surprising indeed.” Venus let out. Adonis helped himself. and reested on her bed as he confessed, “There are a lot of things that I want to share with you, Venus. Humour is definitely not one of my best attributes, but I have other things.” “Other things like?” Venus asked curiosuly like a child. Adonised grinned deviously and confessed, “I have a lot more tenderness and affection to offer to you.” Just when Venus’s gaze fell, he held her in a tight embrace and admitted, “If I’d ever to forget about you, I’d probably hope I die before pledging my loyalties and affection to anyone else.”  Venus’ eyes welled up with tears which she tried to stop from springing out of her eyes, and spoke, “Why do you talk about death? Even if you were to forget about me, I will keep following you until you remember everything about me.” “Promise?” “It’s a promise,” Venus assured and then placed his head upon her chest and caressed it gently.  ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~  ~ AUTHOR'S NOTE ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Add this book in your library to show your love and support to the author.
