Chapter 14
[Valerio]
“On time, as always.”, Augustine scoffed while I entered the High Council chambers a few minutes after Carla. “Shall we get started, or do you have something else to take care of?”
Right next to Augustine, Malzahar – the second most powerful Lupus in their command line, smirked sarcastically. Aurora, the third Lupi representative, lowered in her chair with embarrassment as if she wanted to avoid being associated with the snappy remarks thrown at me.
I sat in my high armchair and looked around the room.
“Actually, Augustine, to answer your question first - yes, I need something taken care of. And that is the attitude and feeling of pristine entitlement of your North settlement. But before we go there, Francis, is there something about the Feri we should be aware of?”, my eyes and voice were cold with the annoyance brought by the recent tension between the clans.
I turned to Francis, the leader of the Feri, and her two Seconds – Victoria and Mikhail who looked at each other confused.
“Let me refresh your memory, if I may.”, I hissed and looked them in the eyes. “The next time the Feri want to go wild and start killing humans instead of simply feeding as necessary and deleting their memories, I will cut your heads off myself. Is the message clear?”
Francis’s face went pale at my threat and she simply nodded. I was furious to find out, thanks to Lorenzo, that three human bodies had turned up South, clearly killed by Feri as their necks were torn apart, and the police was investigating the crimes.
Shifting my attention to Clara, Augustine and their Seconds, I told them briefly about my visit to the North settlements. After three days of negotiations with Yolanda and Ben – the community leaders, we reached the agreement that the Magi would take full control of the free land and take ownership by signing the deed for the land. The Lupi would continue to use the acres of land they had already started building on, but agreed (or more like obeyed to my orders) to pay a hefty fee to the Magi settlement.
“Does anyone have anything to discuss, or are we over?”, I asked but nothing but silence followed. “Good.”
Getting up and exiting the High Council chambers, I saw Vanessa waiting in the hallway.
“What the hell have you done do Eleanor, big brother?”
[Eleanor]
“Sorry I’m late! Sorry, sorry!”, Vanessa pouted while opening the door to the training room wide open and crashing inside.
“Fifty push-ups. Now!”, Austin commanded while glaring at her. I couldn’t help but giggle at Vanessa who made a sad face and dropped her bag in the corner of the room with despair. “You too, Eleanor!”, Austin turned to me in return.
“But… I was here on time, it’s not fair!”, I cried and flew my hands in the air. Austin was back to being a dictator, it seemed. A Triad, hot dictator I would not mind obeying if he was going to cuddle me all night again.
Thank God I had already stretched or those push-ups would have hurt like a b***h, I thought to myself after getting up and going to my bag to grab some water. I still had not told Austin, or anyone for that matter, that I had felt… and heard my wolf. She was gone again, the back of my mind as empty as before. I was surprised with myself as an unfamiliar feeling touched me… I missed her. I wanted her back more than anything.
“Austin, can I speak to you for a second?”, I asked while he was looking at his phone. Vanessa was still doing her push-ups (I couldn’t believe I was already stronger than her in just less than a week!)
“Sure, what’s up?”, Austin looked up from his phone.
“I felt her yesterday.”, I bit my lip in excitement while my hands folded together in front of my body.
“Who? Wait, do you mean… your wolf?”, his eyes widened and he made a step towards me.
“Yeah. Just for a bit, and she is gone again. But, but, that is a good thing right?”
“You can’t feel her anymore?”, Austin’s eyes darkened and a frown appeared between his brows. “Eleanor, if she is gone again, it means she doesn’t want to merge with you.”
“W-what?!”, I gaped. This could not be true! Then why was she sad because I was sad?! “But… I was crying and I heard her crying, too.”
“Hm… Maybe she didn’t show herself and cry because you were sad. Maybe you found her simply because you were feeling what she was feeling.”
“I’m ready!”, Vanessa shouted at us while turning on her back and resting on the wooden floor.
I turned to look at her with fear in my eyes. My wolf was miserable, or hurt, or both. And I had no idea why or how to reach her.
Fuck!
…..
“Austin, I have to find her! I have to know why she was crying like this, if it was not because I was sad! I have to know why she doesn’t want me!”, I paced back and forth, my voice raising with every word that came out of my mouth. Him, Vanessa and I were still in the training room after we finished our morning session.
“I know, and you will. But I have to check something first, a ritual. I have never done it or seen it done before.”
“Please hurry.”, I turned to him with defeat. My wolf turning away from me felt like the worst heartbreak a first love can give you… It hurt like hell and it made my chest tighten with misery and sadness.
“I will. Vanessa, do you know if your brother is free? He is the only one who has access to the books I need.”
“I think he is free for the day, yeah.”, Vanessa replied with worry in her voice matching mine. For a moment I had forgotten she was without a wolf too. I kept wondering why that was…
“Okay, I’ll go straight to him then. I will do everything in my power to help you reach your wolf, Eleanor.”, Austin said and put his hand on my arm before turning and leaving the training room.
“You have a brother?”, I asked turning to Vanessa.
“Wait, you didn’t know?”
“No, who is it?”, I laughed. I realized I had never asked her anything personal yet.
“Valerio.”
