Sleeper

Lucy’s room was opulent and large, so much so that the lingering melancholy that she was feeling vanished immediately when she sighted it. Amanda and Robert could have that dump as far as she was concerned. Since she was very tired, she took a long, leisurely bath to wash away the stress of the past few days, after which she fell on the big, soft, and comfortable bed and promptly fell asleep. She woke up sometime after ten the next money, disoriented as hell, and it took several minutes before she got her bearing. She checked her phone to see several missed calls from her sister, who had probably driven herself mad with worry when she did not hear from her. She returned the call immediately, not at all surprised when Nancy lay into her immediately, tearing a new one for not answering her calls. “I’m sorry, Nancy. I slept off and lost track of time.” Lucy said, trying to pacify her sister. In a way, it was good to know that someone cared about her this much. “You can’t do that, okay? Not when you’re all by yourself in a strange land and not after the mood you were in yesterday.” “I know, and I’m sorry. I was just so tired that I went to sleep immediately and somehow didn’t hear my phone ring.” “That’s okay. Have you booked your flight ticket yet?” Nancy asked. “Um, about that … I’ve decided to stay and enjoy my vacation, after all.” “Okay, that’s better. You shouldn’t let those assholes get to you. Just avoid them, and you’ll be okay.” “Yeah. Actually, it’s not like I had a choice in the matter of staying.” “What do you mean by that?” “I met this guy, who paid for a hotel room in this five-star hotel for me for two weeks,” Lucy told her sister. “Oh, wow! How on earth did you manage that? I thought that you were upset by what your ex-best friend and ex-fiancée did. How come you’re already seeing someone else, not that it’s a bad thing if it helps you get over what happened, you know.” “Oh, no. It’s nothing like that.” Lucy protested, and then launched into an explanation of how she met Eric and how she kept running into him. “He sounds like a nice guy. You know what? I just had this brilliant idea!” “Really? Let’s hear it.” Lucy replied, rolling her eyes, even though her sister could not see her. “You should totally use Eric to make those assholes jealous, like pretend that you don’t care that they’re together. I mean, you said he’s loaded and good-looking, right?” “Well, he did book a room in a five-star hotel for me for two weeks without breaking a sweat and after only just meeting me too, so I guess that he’s rich, or at least comfortable. Also, take it from me, he’s very handsome. I don’t see what any of that has got to do with anything, though.” “It has everything to do with everything. I don’t want you coming off as sad about what happened. You need to look like you moved on and couldn’t care less about the betrayal of those two. I don’t mean that you should get in bed with Eric, except if you want to, of course.” Nancy said mischievously. “No, I can’t do that. I mean, the guy has done so much for me within days of me meeting him. The last thing I want to do is impose on him even more. Besides, I have a feeling that those two will see through me and any act that I carry out immediately. I’ll just do my best to avoid them if we do cross paths, which I’m hopeful we won’t, and I’ll try to enjoy my vacation as I promised Eric I would.” “Alright then, suit yourself. Just have fun, whatever you do. Anyway, I have to go now. Also, I’m sorry to tell you this, but when I couldn’t reach you, I had to swallow my pride and call Robert. I told him the state you were in and how I couldn’t reach you, so he should help me check if you were in any of the rooms in his hotel. If I had known that you were fine, I would not have done that.” “Damn it, Nancy, did you have to tell him that I was crying?” Lucy asked in embarrassment. So much for trying to maintain a calm look in front of Amanda and Robert. “Well, I had to make him understand the gravity of the situation. Anyway, he may be looking for you or something, so I’ll just call him and tell him not to bother his sorry a*s, that I’ve gotten in touch with you. Do you see why it’s important that you show him that you’re over him? It galls me to think that he knows you were crying over him and his betrayal, but I was quite desperate to reach you at the time.” “He can think whatever he wants about me. That’s his business. Anyway, I think that Eric was only trying to be nice. I have no intentions of imposing on him.” “Fine. Anyway, bye now. I love you.” “I love you too,” Lucy replied, and they hung up the phone, after which she went to take her bath. She had no idea what she was going to do with herself on this vacation in terms of activities, but one thing was sure. She was done crying like a baby. She couldn’t help wishing that she would run into Eric again, or that he would seek her out, at least. Maybe she could ask him what activities he recommended that she carry out. This whole thing sucked because she had foolishly let Robert plan everything, and had not bothered herself with any of it. Now she was on vacation without the slightest idea of what to do for fun. On second thought, she decided to scour the internet for fun activities that she could carry out alone. She soon stumbled upon a site offering a day tour the next day. She immediately paid for it, thinking to herself that she needed to spend some time with other people, and going on a tour was a perfect way to do that. Luckily enough, she was confident of the fact that she wasn’t going to run into Amanda and Robert. It just wasn't Robert's sort of thing, and when she had suggested it to him while they were still together and he was planning the vacation, he had shot it down immediately. Feeling good about her decision, she ordered breakfast and then settled down to watch some TV for the whole day.
