At first, Lucy didn’t register what she was seeing and could only stare dumbly at both of them, the same way that they stared dumbly back at her. It was Amanda’s loud gasp that jolted her out of the stupor that she was in and she stammered out feebly, suddenly feeling very faint.
“What’s going on here?”
“Lucy. I swear it’s not what you think.” Amanda babbled, hurrying back into the house and out of sight, and leaving Lucy with her lying, cheating fiancée, who, from the look of things, was going to be her ex-fiancée sooner than one could say, Jack Robinson. Robert was still staring at her, seemingly floundering for words.
“What’s going on here?” Lucy asked again, hating herself for the stupid tears that sprang to her eyes. Her heart felt like a huge crater had opened up within it, and she was hurting so bad. Maybe if it had been any other female, she wouldn’t have felt as bad as she did now. She had known Amanda and had been best friends with her since high school, for chrissakes.
“Lucy, baby. Amanda is right. It’s obviously not what you think. She came over to ask me something, but spilled some stuff on her clothes, so she had to put them in the dryer…” He trailed off and slammed his mouth shut, his face flaming as he realized just how stupid and ridiculous this excuse must sound to Lucy.
“You bastards!” Lucy said quietly, wiping away her tears angrily and wondering fleetingly to herself how she was able to take all this so calmly. What she really felt like doing was to bash his head in with the closest solid instrument she could find, but she would be damned if she went to jail because of this asshole.
“Lucy, please. You’re freaking out over nothing. It was just a one-time thing. I swear, I love you. I don’t know how it happened, but I swear, I love you.”
“You love me? I hate you and wish I never met you.”
“You should have called before coming over…”
“I should have called before coming over? So that you would have the time to hide or get rid of your skank? I can’t believe this!” She shrieked, rushing at him in a daze and pounding on his strong chest with her small fist with all her might. She was not big, but the force with which she launched herself at him caused him to stagger back into the house, where Amanda had put on her clothes, which were supposedly in the dryer, and was watching them calmly.
“And you! You’re supposed to be my best friend. I can’t believe this!” Lucy screeched at Amanda, her emotions finally getting the best of her. Now that she had started shouting, it was almost as though she could not bring herself to stop.
“Calm down. You’re going to injure your vocal cords or bring this whole place down on our heads with the way you’re shouting. I really don’t get why you’re so upset. I met Rob before you did, after all.” Amanda said matter of factly, having gotten over her initial shock.
“Wow. You’re not even remorseful? That’s how you stab someone you claim was your best friend in the back? By sleeping with her man? How would you feel if I did the same to you?” Lucy asked, wondering how she could have been so blind.
“Look, Lucy. I get that you’re hurt that we kept such a thing away from you. Trust me, I get it, but the fact remains that it was just s*x, at least in the beginning.”
“Amanda…” Robert warned, dragging his hand through his hair as he thought of the best way to distance himself from this whole mess.
“Just s*x? Oh, my God! I’m such a fool. How long has this been going on? How long have you bastards been f*****g behind my back and making a total fool out of me?” Lucy cried.
“I’m not a bastard, and these things happen. I’m sorry that I hurt you, but I will not stand here and watch you call me names.” Amanda retorted hotly, causing Lucy to stare at her as though she had sprouted two horns right before her very eyes. She could hardly reconcile this person with the lady she had thought was her best friend.
“Please, let’s all calm down. Lucy, I know that you’re hurt, and honestly, I wish I hadn’t hurt you. Amanda, can you please give us some privacy? I want to talk to Lucy alone.” Robert pleaded. At least, he had the decency to act remorseful, even though his remorse wasn’t going to change anything.
“I’m actually not going to go anywhere. There’s no point in sugar coating anything. We’ve deceived her long enough, and it’s only fair to all of us that we come clean. You tell her right this minute, or I will.” Amanda told Robert, who visibly paled, and gulped at this command.
“Amanda, please. We talked about this…”
“No, you talked, and I refused everything you suggested. There’s no way I’m going to do what you’re asking. No way in hell!” Amanda spat at Robert. The both of them were focused on each other and Lucy looked from one to the other, wondering what the hell they were talking about. She did not have to wait to find out. When Robert remained silent, despite the fact that Amanda was glaring daggers at him, Amanda turned to face Lucy and addressed her.
“We’ve been having an affair behind your back for two years,” Amanda said.
“Two years? Two f*****g years? That’s how long Robert and I have been dating. You mean this whole while, you both had been screwing yourselves behind my back?” Lucy asked in disbelief. Her tears had dried up for now. There would be more than enough time for her to cry when she got back home.
“It was about two or three months after you guys started dating, I guess. See, Lucy, I have no beef with you. I’ve been your best friend all this while, and this thing sort of just happened. Anyway, the thing is that I’ve had several abortions for Rob here, and I’ll be damned if I have another one. I’ve been advised against having any more abortions by my doctor. I’m pregnant with Robert’s child, and I’m keeping it.”
