Chapter 16: The Shadow King's Arrival

1155 Words
The mountains trembled. Crimson lightning tore across the heavens. The sky itself seemed to split apart as dark energy poured through the massive c***k above the village. Every living thing froze. Birds fled from the forests. The wind died. Even the storm surrounding Aadhya weakened. For the first time since awakening her powers, she felt something she rarely experienced. Fear. The Shadow Hunters immediately dropped to one knee. Lord Kael lowered his head. No one had commanded them. They simply knew. Their master had arrived. A crushing pressure settled over the battlefield. Villagers collapsed to the ground. Several Guardians struggled to remain standing. Even Randhir gritted his teeth against the invisible weight pressing down on him. "What... is this?" Veer whispered. His voice barely escaped his lips. Orion stepped forward. His golden spear blazed brightly. Ancient runes ignited across his armor. "The Shadow King." The name echoed like a curse. Sanyukta looked toward the c***k in the sky. Her heartbeat thundered inside her chest. For years she had heard stories. Prophecies. Warnings. Nightmares. Yet none of them had prepared her for this. A figure slowly descended from the darkness. Tall. Wrapped in black armor that seemed forged from living shadows. A long cloak flowed behind him like liquid night. His crimson eyes burned brighter than the lightning surrounding him. The moment his feet touched the ground, the village shook. Silence followed. Absolute silence. The Shadow King looked around calmly. Almost casually. As though standing before the Seven Keys was nothing more than a minor inconvenience. Then his gaze settled upon Veer. The Seventh Key. A smile appeared. "At last." Veer's blood ran cold. Something about those eyes felt wrong. Ancient. Endless. Hungry. The Shadow King took a single step forward. Instantly Orion moved. Golden energy erupted across the battlefield. "You will go no further." The Shadow King looked at him. For a moment neither spoke. Ancient guardian. Ancient king. Two beings who remembered a world long forgotten. Finally, the Shadow King laughed softly. "Orion." His voice carried surprising familiarity. "It's been a long time." Orion tightened his grip on the spear. "Not long enough." The Shadow King's smile widened. "You always were dramatic." Aryan blinked. "Wait." He pointed between them. "You two know each other?" Nobody answered. Mostly because nobody could believe Aryan was asking questions at a time like this. The Shadow King ignored him. His eyes remained fixed on Orion. "You still guard the Gate." "And you still seek to corrupt it." The smile vanished. For the first time, genuine hostility appeared in the Shadow King's expression. Then the ground exploded. BOOM! Dark energy erupted outward. Golden light answered immediately. The collision shook the mountains. Everyone stumbled backward. The battle between the ancient beings had begun. Orion charged first. His spear cut through the air like a comet. Golden energy followed every movement. The Shadow King blocked effortlessly. Darkness wrapped around his arm. The impact created a shockwave that shattered nearby ice formations. A second strike followed. Then a third. Faster. Stronger. Each powerful enough to level entire buildings. The Shadow King blocked them all. The sky flashed with gold and crimson. The battlefield became a storm of impossible power. Veer watched in amazement. He had never imagined beings like this existed. No. He had never imagined power like this existed. The Shadow King suddenly disappeared. Orion's eyes widened. Too late. Darkness appeared behind him. A devastating strike slammed into the guardian. The ground cracked beneath Orion's feet. The ancient warrior slid backward across the frozen earth. Several mountains in the distance trembled. Aadhya stared. Orion was losing. Not completely. Not yet. But the difference in power was obvious. The Shadow King had grown stronger. Much stronger. Sanyukta's symbol suddenly burned. Pain shot through her wrist. Another vision. She saw the Celestial Gate. Seven glowing symbols. One by one they illuminated. First. Second. Third. Fourth. Fifth. Sixth. Seventh. Then she saw something else. The Gate opening. Not fully. Just slightly. Enough for a single beam of light to emerge. The light struck the Shadow King. And for the first time... He looked afraid. The vision shattered. Sanyukta gasped. Randhir immediately caught her. "What happened?" She looked toward Veer. "The Seventh Key." Everyone turned. "The prophecy isn't about protecting him." Confusion spread across their faces. "What do you mean?" Elara asked. Sanyukta swallowed. "He's the key to stopping the Shadow King." The Seventh Key. Not merely another piece of the prophecy. The most important piece. The realization changed everything. Unfortunately... The Shadow King heard her. His crimson eyes shifted toward Veer. And suddenly he stopped fighting Orion. Everyone felt it. The change. The decision. The Shadow King no longer cared about the battle. He cared about Veer. "Interesting." Darkness exploded across the battlefield. The Shadow King moved. Fast. Far too fast. Straight toward the Seventh Key. "VEER!" Sanyukta shouted. Everything happened at once. Randhir charged. Aryan threw both daggers. Aadhya summoned lightning. Elara unleashed protective magic. Orion lunged forward. Yet none of them were fast enough. The Shadow King reached Veer instantly. Dark energy wrapped around his hand. Veer froze. Not because he was weak. Not because he lacked courage. Because the Shadow King's presence felt overwhelming. Ancient. Unstoppable. The king reached toward him. Then something unexpected happened. Veer grabbed his wrist. The battlefield froze. Everyone stared. Including the Shadow King. Silver-black energy erupted between them. The symbol on Veer's wrist blazed brighter than the sun. A shockwave exploded outward. The mountains shook violently. The sky cracked. The Shadow King was thrown backward. Actually thrown backward. The impossible had happened. Silence consumed the battlefield. No one moved. No one spoke. The Shadow King slowly rose. For the first time since his arrival... His expression wasn't calm. It wasn't confident. It wasn't amused. It was shocked. Veer stared at his own hands. He hadn't attacked intentionally. The power had acted on its own. Protecting him. Protecting itself. The Shadow King looked directly at the silver-black symbol. Then he smiled. Not with triumph. With realization. "So that's why they feared you." His voice echoed across the mountains. The Seventh Key's power wasn't simply balance. It was resistance. A force neither light nor darkness could fully control. A force capable of opposing both realms. A force capable of challenging kings. The Shadow King's smile widened. "Magnificent." Orion's face darkened. Because he knew exactly what that look meant. The Shadow King wasn't discouraged. He was fascinated. And fascination made him more dangerous than ever. Crimson lightning flashed across the sky. Snow swirled around the battlefield. The Seven Keys were awakening. The Gate was stirring. And now the Shadow King finally understood the true value of the Seventh Key. Which meant he would never stop hunting him. The war had entered a new phase. And somewhere far beyond the stars... The Celestial Gate pulsed once. As though responding to the awakening of its final Key. ✨ To Be Continued...
