Chapter 17: The Gate Responds

1157 Words
The Celestial Gate pulsed. Once. A single heartbeat echoing across existence. No one on the battlefield saw it. No one heard it. Yet every awakened Key felt it. Sanyukta clutched her wrist. Aadhya's silver eyes widened. Veer's symbol blazed with silver-black fire. Even far away, hidden across distant kingdoms, the Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Keys suddenly looked toward the sky. Something had changed. Something ancient. Something irreversible. Back in the village, silence still hung over the battlefield. The Shadow King stood motionless. His crimson eyes remained fixed on Veer. The Seventh Key. The final piece of the prophecy. The only being capable of influencing both light and darkness. Around them, snow continued falling. Slowly. Quietly. Almost peacefully. A strange contrast to the chaos surrounding them. Then Orion stepped forward. Golden energy rolled from his armor. "Everyone fall back." The order was immediate. Firm. Dangerously serious. Even Aryan stopped joking. That alone told everyone how severe the situation had become. The group quickly gathered around Veer. Sanyukta stood beside him. Randhir positioned himself in front. Aadhya remained alert. Lightning flickered across her fingertips. The Shadow King watched them calmly. Then he laughed. Not loudly. Not cruelly. Simply amused. "You truly believe you can stop me?" Randhir raised his sword. "We only need to stop you today." The Shadow King's smile widened. "A brave answer." His gaze shifted toward Veer. "But eventually he will make a choice." Veer frowned. "What choice?" The king's eyes gleamed. "The same choice every soul must make." Darkness swirled around him. "Power." The shadows thickened. "Fear." The air grew colder. "Hope." The wind trembled. "Despair." His voice echoed through the mountains. "Light." A silver glow appeared. "Darkness." Crimson energy answered. Then he pointed directly at Veer. "But you..." Silence followed. "You may choose both." No one spoke. Because deep down, everyone knew that was exactly what made the Seventh Key different. And dangerous. Suddenly the ground shook again. Not from the Shadow King's power. Not from Orion's. Something else. Everyone felt it immediately. The mountain itself was responding. Massive cracks spread across the frozen landscape. Snow slid from distant cliffs. Avalanches thundered through nearby valleys. Orion's expression changed instantly. "No..." The ancient guardian looked toward the northern horizon. Far beyond the village. Far beyond the mountains. A pillar of silver light erupted into the sky. Then another. Then another. Three pillars. Three different locations. Sanyukta stared. "What are those?" Orion looked troubled. "Ancient seals." Everyone froze. The words sounded familiar. Dangerously familiar. "The seals guarding the pathways to the Celestial Gate." Aadhya's eyes narrowed. "They're breaking?" Orion slowly nodded. "The Gate is responding to the awakening of the Seventh Key." Veer's stomach dropped. "What does that mean?" The ancient guardian's answer wasn't comforting. "It means the countdown has accelerated." Silence. Even the Shadow King looked interested. For the first time, uncertainty flickered in his eyes. That worried Orion even more. Because if something could surprise the Shadow King... Then the situation was worse than anyone realized. Far above the battlefield... Beyond the clouds. Beyond the stars. The Celestial Gate shimmered. Ancient runes illuminated across its surface. Thousands of symbols awakened simultaneously. A vast presence stirred behind the enormous doors. Watching. Waiting. Observing. The Seven Keys had nearly reunited. The prophecy was advancing faster than expected. And something imprisoned beyond the Gate had begun to awaken as well. A deep voice echoed through the celestial realm. Ancient. Powerful. Unknown. "At last..." The stars trembled. Then silence returned. Back in the village... Lord Kael suddenly appeared beside the Shadow King. The general immediately knelt. "My Lord." The Shadow King's gaze never left Veer. "We are leaving." Kael blinked. The order surprised him. The Seventh Key stood right before them. This was the perfect opportunity. Yet he knew better than to question his king. "As you command." Darkness began gathering around the Shadow Hunters. Aadhya frowned. "Why are they retreating?" Orion answered quietly. "Because they learned what they came to learn." The Shadow King smiled. "Exactly." His crimson eyes met Veer's. "We will meet again." The certainty in his voice was terrifying. Not a threat. A promise. Then darkness swallowed him. The Shadow King vanished. Kael disappeared moments later. The remaining Hunters dissolved into shadows. Within seconds the battlefield was empty. Gone. As though they had never been there. Only broken buildings and scarred earth remained. The villagers slowly emerged from hiding. Fear still filled their faces. But now something else was there too. Wonder. Confusion. Disbelief. Because nothing about today made sense. And it never would again. Veer looked around the ruined village. Homes had been damaged. Roads shattered. Fear lingered everywhere. All because of him. The realization hurt. "I should leave." Everyone turned toward him. "What?" Sanyukta asked. Veer looked away. "They came because of me." "No." "They attacked because they wanted me." "No." His voice rose. "If I stay, they'll come back." The silence that followed felt heavy. Painful. Because there was truth in his words. The Shadow King would return. Everyone knew it. Finally, Meera stepped forward. The little girl looked surprisingly angry. "No." Veer blinked. "What?" "You always do this." He stared. "When things get difficult, you try to handle them alone." Several villagers nodded. Apparently this was a habit. Meera crossed her arms. "You're not leaving because you're a danger." The girl pointed toward Sanyukta and the others. "You're leaving because they're your people." Veer looked at the group. The strange travelers. The Keys. The guardian. People he had met only hours ago. Yet somehow... He felt connected to them. Especially Sanyukta. The connection was impossible to explain. Almost like meeting someone from a forgotten memory. Sanyukta smiled softly. "She's right." Veer laughed weakly. "She's ten." "She's also smarter than Aryan." "Hey!" Aryan protested. Everyone laughed. Even Randhir. A very small laugh. But it counted. For the first time since the battle began, hope returned. As evening approached, Orion stood atop a nearby cliff overlooking the village. The setting sun painted the snow golden. Beautiful. Peaceful. Deceptively calm. Sanyukta approached quietly. "You look worried." Orion didn't answer immediately. His eyes remained fixed on the horizon. "The Shadow King shouldn't have retreated." That wasn't reassuring. "What are you thinking?" The ancient guardian finally looked at her. "He knows something." A chill ran through her. "What?" Orion's expression darkened. "I don't know." The answer frightened her more than certainty. Because Orion always seemed to know something. If he was uncertain... Then they were facing something unexpected. Something ancient. Something hidden. Far away, a distant rumble echoed through the mountains. The pillar of silver light still burned against the horizon. One of the seals. One of the pathways. One of the mysteries waiting ahead. The journey was far from over. The Seven Keys still needed to unite. The Celestial Gate was still awakening. And somewhere beyond the stars... Something was waiting for them. Watching. Patiently. Until the final key turned. ✨ To Be Continued...
