Chapter 13: The Journey North

1226 Words
The next morning, the sanctuary was more active than it had been in centuries. Guardians hurried through stone corridors. Weapons were gathered. Ancient maps were unrolled. Messengers raced between towers carrying urgent reports. Everyone understood the situation. The Seventh Key had awakened. And every minute mattered. Inside the Hall of Prophecies, Orion stood before a massive map carved into the floor. Golden lines connected kingdoms, mountains, oceans, and forgotten lands. Sanyukta, Randhir, Aryan, and Elara gathered around him. "The Frozen North lies beyond three kingdoms," Orion explained. "Ordinary travel would take several months." Aryan groaned. "Please tell me we aren't walking." "We are not." Aryan immediately smiled. "I knew destiny liked me." Randhir sighed. "Destiny has terrible judgment." Before Aryan could respond, Orion struck the floor with the base of his spear. Golden runes ignited across the hall. The map began glowing. Ancient symbols awakened one after another. The entire sanctuary trembled. Sanyukta watched in amazement. "What is this?" "A Celestial Path." Orion's voice echoed through the chamber. "A road created by the First Guardians." The glowing lines on the map rose into the air. A doorway of pure silver light appeared before them. Wind rushed from the portal. Cold wind. Frozen wind. The air smelled of snow and pine forests. The Frozen North. Aryan stared at it. "I've officially stopped questioning things." "That happened a long time ago," Elara replied. "Fair." Orion looked at the group. "Once we pass through, there will be no returning until the path reopens." Everyone nodded. Sanyukta took a deep breath. Somewhere beyond that doorway was the Seventh Key. A stranger whose life was about to change forever. She stepped forward first. Randhir followed without hesitation. Aryan walked in next. Then Elara. Finally, Orion entered. The portal closed behind them. And the sanctuary vanished. --- Thousands of miles away... Snow drifted gently through the village. Veer sat outside his small home. The strange symbol had appeared twice since yesterday. Each time it vanished before he could understand it. Each time the whispers returned. His entire life felt as though it was falling apart. The worst part was that nobody had answers. Not even the village elders. A sudden voice interrupted his thoughts. "You're thinking too loudly." Veer looked up. A young girl stood nearby. She couldn't have been older than ten. Her name was Meera. She was the village baker's daughter. Veer laughed despite himself. "Thinking doesn't make noise." "It does when your face looks like that." Veer shook his head. "I'll keep that in mind." Meera sat beside him. For a few moments neither spoke. Then her expression became serious. "I had a dream." Veer blinked. "A dream?" She nodded. "There were seven stars." A strange chill ran through him. "And?" "Six were bright." Her voice became quieter. "The seventh was lonely." Veer's smile disappeared. "Then what happened?" Meera looked toward the mountains. "Monsters came for it." His heart skipped a beat. Children often had strange dreams. Yet somehow this felt different. Important. Before he could ask anything else, a loud horn echoed through the village. Everyone froze. Villagers emerged from homes. Confused murmurs spread through the streets. The warning horn. It had never sounded before. Veer immediately stood. "What happened?" A guard came running through the snow. His face was pale. "There are strangers approaching." --- Several miles away... Dark figures moved through the forest. Hundreds of them. Shadow hunters. Silent. Relentless. Deadly. At their center walked a tall figure wrapped in black armor. Crimson eyes glowed beneath his hood. One of the Shadow King's generals. Lord Kael. He stopped at the edge of a frozen cliff. Below lay the village. Tiny. Defenseless. Exactly where the Seventh Key was hiding. A cruel smile appeared. "So this is where destiny chose to hide." The hunters behind him waited. Patiently. Like wolves surrounding prey. Kael raised one hand. "Leave the villagers alive." The hunters looked surprised. One dared to ask why. Kael's smile widened. "Because fear spreads faster when witnesses survive." --- Meanwhile... The Celestial Path opened atop a snowy mountain. Silver light exploded outward. Five figures stepped into the freezing air. Aryan immediately shivered. "Why is every important place freezing cold?" Nobody answered. Mostly because they were wondering the same thing. The Frozen North stretched endlessly before them. White mountains. Frozen rivers. Ancient forests. A beautiful and unforgiving land. Orion closed his eyes. Golden energy surrounded him. "I can sense the Seventh Key." Everyone became alert. "Where?" Sanyukta asked. Orion pointed toward the horizon. "A village." Relief briefly crossed Elara's face. "Then we're close." Orion didn't look relieved. He looked concerned. "What is it?" Randhir asked. The ancient guardian opened his eyes. "They are already here." Silence. Everyone understood. The Shadow King's forces. Aryan groaned. "We really need to stop arriving second." Without another word, the group began moving. Snow crunched beneath their feet. The race had truly begun. --- Elsewhere... Aadhya stood atop a mountain ridge. The storm around her carried her forward. She no longer walked. The wind itself guided her. Lightning danced around her fingertips. The symbol of the Third Key glowed brightly. Her visions had become stronger. She could feel the Seventh Key. His confusion. His fear. His loneliness. And she could feel something else. Darkness. Closing in. Aadhya's silver eyes narrowed. "The Shadow King." Thunder rolled across the sky. The storm responded to her anger. Trees bent. Clouds darkened. Snow swirled violently. For the first time since awakening, Aadhya made a choice. Not because a voice told her. Not because destiny demanded it. But because she wanted to. She would protect the Seventh Key. No matter what happened. The wind surged forward. And she vanished into the storm. --- Back in the village... The warning horn continued sounding. Villagers gathered near the central square. Fear spread rapidly. Nobody knew what was coming. Yet everyone felt it. Something was wrong. Very wrong. Veer stood near the front of the crowd. The strange mark on his wrist suddenly burned. Pain shot through his arm. He gasped. The silver-black symbol reappeared. Brighter than ever before. Several villagers noticed. Fear flashed across their faces. Before anyone could speak— A scream echoed from the edge of the village. Then another. And another. The crowd turned. Dark figures emerged from the snow-covered forest. Dozens. Hundreds. Glowing red eyes. Living shadows. The village fell silent. Even the wind seemed to stop. Lord Kael stepped forward. His black cloak moved like smoke. His crimson gaze locked onto Veer instantly. The symbol on Veer's wrist glowed even brighter. Kael smiled. "There you are." Veer's blood ran cold. Because somehow he knew. These creatures hadn't come for the village. They hadn't come for treasure. Or conquest. Or revenge. They had come for him. The Shadow Hunters slowly surrounded the village. The villagers backed away in terror. And far across the mountains, Sanyukta suddenly stopped running. Her own symbol burned. She could feel him. The Seventh Key. Closer than ever before. She looked toward the distant horizon. Toward the village hidden beneath falling snow. A terrible feeling filled her chest. "We're running out of time." Randhir followed her gaze. The sky above the village had turned black. Even from miles away they could see it. Darkness had arrived first. And the battle for the Seventh Key was about to begin. ✨ To Be Continued...
