Lucian and Marcus crouched behind the thick underbrush, their breaths shallow as they observed the scene before them. Ethan, bound and surrounded by rogues, looked small and terrified amidst the ruins. Lucian's heart clenched at the sight, his paternal instincts roaring to the forefront.
"Stay calm," Marcus whispered, his eyes never leaving the rogues. "We need to think this through. Malek’s expecting us."
Lucian nodded, forcing himself to remain composed. "We need a distraction," he said, his mind racing. "Something to draw their attention away from Ethan."
Marcus smirked, a glint of mischief in his eyes. "Leave that to me. You get ready to grab the boy."
Before Lucian could respond, Marcus was gone, moving silently through the trees. Moments later, a series of loud crashes echoed through the ruins, followed by shouts of confusion from the rogues. Lucian saw his chance and darted forward, keeping low to the ground.
As he neared Ethan, he could see the boy's eyes widen in fear and confusion. "Who are you?" Ethan whispered, his voice trembling.
Lucian’s heart sank, but he kept his voice steady. "I'm here to help you. Stay quiet, and we’ll get out of this."
Just as Lucian was about to free Ethan, Malek’s voice cut through the chaos. "Hold it right there, Lucian. One more step and the boy pays the price."
Lucian froze, his eyes locking onto Malek. The rogue leader stood a few feet away, a cruel smile playing on his lips. He held a dagger, its blade glinting menacingly in the dim light.
"Let him go, Malek," Lucian growled, his voice low and dangerous. "This is between you and me."
Malek chuckled, a cold, mirthless sound. "Oh, but it’s so much more fun with the boy involved. Don’t you agree?"
Before Lucian could respond, Marcus burst from the shadows, tackling Malek to the ground. The dagger clattered away as the two men grappled, a fierce struggle for dominance. Lucian seized the moment, cutting Ethan’s bonds and pulling him to his feet.
"Run, Ethan," Lucian urged. "Run to the trees and don’t look back."
Ethan hesitated, his eyes wide with fear. "But—"
"Go!" Lucian commanded, his voice leaving no room for argument.
Ethan took off, darting through the underbrush just as Malek managed to throw Marcus off. The rogue leader scrambled to his feet, fury blazing in his eyes. "You’ll pay for that," he snarled, lunging at Lucian.
Lucian met Malek’s attack head-on, their bodies colliding with bone-jarring force. They fought with a savage intensity, each blow fueled by years of animosity. Lucian could hear Marcus dealing with the remaining rogues, the sounds of battle echoing around them.
Just when it seemed Malek might gain the upper hand, a sudden, piercing howl filled the air. Lucian’s heart skipped a beat as he recognized the sound. Reinforcements. His pack had arrived.
The rogues faltered, their confidence wavering as a group of werewolves burst into the clearing, led by Lucian’s second-in-command. The tables had turned.
Malek’s eyes darted around, realizing his position was now untenable. "This isn’t over, Lucian," he hissed, backing away. "I’ll be back. And next time, I won’t be so merciful."
Before Lucian could respond, Malek disappeared into the forest, his remaining rogues following suit. Lucian’s pack members quickly subdued the stragglers, ensuring they couldn’t regroup.
Lucian’s chest heaved as he caught his breath, the adrenaline slowly ebbing. He turned to see Ethan emerging from the trees, his eyes wide with awe and fear.
"Who are you?" Ethan asked, his voice shaking. "Why did you help me?"
Lucian knelt, his heart aching. "I'm Lucian," he said gently. "Your mother sent me to protect you."
Ethan looked confused and wary. "My mom? Where is she?"
"She’s safe," Lucian assured him. "And so are you now."
Suddenly, a rustling sound came from the trees. Lucian and Marcus tensed, but before they could react, Ethan's eyes began to glow with an eerie, otherworldly light. The air around them seemed to vibrate with a strange energy.
"Ethan!" Lucian shouted, but it was too late.
A powerful shockwave emanated from Ethan, throwing everyone off their feet. Lucian, Marcus, and the rogues were all knocked to the ground, stunned. The remaining rogues who hadn't fled were thrown back, slamming into trees and rocks with bone-crunching force.
When Lucian regained his senses, he saw Ethan standing in the middle of the clearing, looking terrified and confused. The glowing had stopped, but the boy was shaking, tears streaming down his face.
"Ethan," Lucian called out softly, approaching him cautiously. "It's okay. You're safe now."
Ethan looked at him, his eyes filled with fear. "What did I do?"
Lucian wrapped his arms around Ethan, holding him close. "You saved us," he whispered. "You saved us all."
Marcus staggered to his feet, shaking his head in disbelief. "What the hell was that?" he muttered, rubbing his bruised shoulder.
Lucian glanced at him, his mind racing. "I don't know," he admitted. "But we need to get back to the estate. We need answers."
As they began their journey back, Lucian felt a mix of awe and fear. Ethan had powers he didn't understand, powers that could change everything. The battle was far from over, but with his son by his side and his pack united, Lucian knew they could face whatever challenges lay ahead. The road would be difficult, but he was ready to fight for his family, no matter the cost.
As they neared the estate, Lucian couldn’t shake the feeling that something was terribly wrong. The closer they got, the more uneasy he felt. When they finally arrived, the sight that greeted them sent a chill down his spine.
The estate gates were wide open, and the grounds were eerily silent. Lucian’s mother, Dr. Marlowe, rushed out to meet them, her face pale with worry.
"Lucian," she gasped. "Something’s happened. Kara... she’s gone."
Lucian’s heart stopped. "What do you mean, gone?"
Dr. Marlowe’s eyes filled with tears. "She disappeared, and there was a note. It’s from Malek. He’s taken her."
Lucian felt a cold rage settle over him. Malek had struck again, and this time, the stakes were higher than ever. He would stop at nothing to save Kara and protect his son. The final confrontation was only just beginning.
