The Weight of His Name

343 Words
The truth had always been there, hovering quietly between them. She knew he was a prince. Everyone did. But knowing of his title and understanding the weight of it were two very different things. It became clearer as time passed. There were days when he arrived late, escorted discreetly. Days when teachers adjusted schedules without explanation. Days when his phone buzzed endlessly with messages he never opened in front of her. She noticed the way his shoulders stiffened whenever unfamiliar adults appeared on campus. One afternoon, she finally asked, her voice careful. “Does it ever get tiring… being who you are?” He looked at her for a long moment before answering. “Yes,” he said quietly. “More than people realize.” They sat beneath a tree near the edge of the school grounds, far enough from curious eyes. The air was still, heavy with unspoken truths. “I didn’t choose this life,” he continued. “But it chose me.” She listened without interruption, without judgment. And in that simple act, he found something rare—understanding. He told her about expectations disguised as duty. About a future planned before he was old enough to dream for himself. About how every decision he made carried consequences far beyond his own happiness. She realized then that loving a prince meant loving the burden he carried. And he realized that caring for her meant risking everything he had been taught to protect. Their closeness deepened, but so did the danger. Whispers began to follow them. Curious glances lingered longer. A teacher once gently suggested that he “maintain appropriate boundaries.” That night, he messaged her. I don’t want to lose you. Her fingers trembled as she typed back. Then don’t. But reality was not that simple. For the first time, she felt fear seep into her dream. Not fear of rejection—but fear of a world that might not allow their story to exist. Still, neither of them stepped away. Some loves, once begun, refused to be abandoned.
