Doug Stan and I didn’t sit together in church after that. We arrived separately, even if we had spent the night together, which was most of the time. Sometimes I went to the eight o’clock service and he attended the 10:30. We tried to be very careful not to be seen together too often, though we spent most nights either at my place or his. Sometimes we took long drives after dark in his Thunderbird. I got my hair cut short, in what Larry Wolfe, my barber, called a Princeton, as short as a crew-cut, but parted and brushed to the side.
