Chapter 8 — Too Late

881 Words
Amelia stared at Alexander. “My unborn child?” Alexander nodded slowly. “There is something your father never told you.” “What?” “Your child could inherit everything.” Amelia frowned. “I don't understand.” Alexander placed an old folder on the table. “Your grandfather established a trust before you were born. The Carter fortune was supposed to pass to you when you turned twenty-five.” Amelia's eyes widened. “But I'm twenty-four.” “Exactly.” Alexander opened the folder. “But there was a condition.” “What condition?” He looked at her. “If you died before your twenty-fifth birthday, the inheritance would pass to your first legitimate child.” Amelia's hand immediately went to her stomach. “My baby.” Alexander nodded. “That's why they're afraid.” She took a step backward. “So someone wants my baby dead because of money?” “Not just money.” Alexander pulled out another document. “Control of several companies, properties, investments, and a voting share in the Carter Foundation.” Amelia stared at the papers. “How much is it worth?” “Billions.” She slowly sat down. For years, she had struggled to pay her own bills. She had never known that she was connected to a fortune. Then she remembered her father's letter. You are not who you think you are. Tears filled her eyes. “Why didn't my father tell me?” “Because he believed knowing the truth would get you killed.” Amelia looked at Alexander. “Then why are you telling me now?” Before Alexander could answer, his phone rang. He answered. “What?” His expression changed. “Where?” He hung up. “What happened?” Amelia asked. “Damian knows about the inheritance.” Amelia's heart sank. “How?” Alexander looked toward the window. “Someone told him.” Blackwood Mansion Damian stood in front of Victoria. “You knew about the Carter trust.” Victoria remained silent. “You knew Amelia's child could inherit it.” “Yes.” Damian's expression hardened. “And you still allowed me to divorce her?” Victoria looked at him. “I didn't know she was pregnant.” “You should have told me everything.” “I was trying to protect you.” “No.” Damian stepped closer. “You were protecting your secrets.” Victoria's eyes filled with tears. “Damian…” He turned away. “I spent three years pushing Amelia away because I thought she was part of a deal.” His voice broke slightly. “And all that time, she was carrying a secret that could get her killed.” Victoria whispered: “There's something else.” Damian turned. “What?” “The person who wants Amelia dead…” She hesitated. “…is someone you trust.” Damian's face went cold. “Who?” Victoria didn't answer. Suddenly, a loud explosion shook the mansion. BOOM! The windows rattled. Damian immediately ran outside. A black SUV had crashed through the front gate. Security guards rushed toward it. Damian pulled out his phone. “Find Amelia.” His assistant answered. “We have a problem.” “What?” “We lost her location.” Damian froze. “What do you mean?” “Her phone was destroyed.” His heart stopped. “Where is she?” “We don't know.” Damian looked toward the road. His worst fear had come true. Someone had found Amelia. At the safe house Amelia heard tires screech outside. Alexander immediately stood. “Stay here.” “What's happening?” “Someone found us.” He grabbed his gun. Then the lights went out. Amelia's heart raced. “Alexander?” No answer. “Alexander!” She heard footsteps in the hallway. Slow. Heavy. Coming closer. The bedroom door suddenly opened. A man in black stood there. Amelia stepped backward. “Who are you?” He raised his weapon. “Your father should have killed you when he had the chance.” Amelia screamed. Suddenly— BANG! The man fell. Alexander stood behind him, breathing heavily. “Amelia!” She ran toward him. But before they could escape, another voice came from downstairs. “AMELIA!” She recognized it instantly. “Damian?” Alexander's expression darkened. Damian stormed into the room. His eyes immediately found Amelia. He rushed toward her. “Are you hurt?” She shook her head. “No.” Damian pulled her into his arms. For several seconds, Amelia didn't move. Then she whispered: “You came.” Damian held her tighter. “I'll always come.” Alexander watched them silently. Then he noticed something on the floor. A small black device. He picked it up. His face changed. “Damian.” Damian turned. “What?” Alexander held up the device. “This is a tracker.” Damian's eyes narrowed. “Who planted it?” Alexander looked at Amelia. Then at Damian. “It wasn't planted on Amelia.” He turned the device over. “It was planted on you.” Damian froze. Someone hadn't been tracking Amelia. They had been tracking Damian. And whoever it was had been watching them from the beginning. To be continued...
