He narrowed his dark eyes, trying to focus, searching the distance for some sign of what it was that had happened. There was no sense of danger, no real concern, after all, the opposition had been withered to such a degree, and he had heard the reports of reinforcements being pinned down east of the river, so there wasn’t really anything to be worried about, yet the suddenness of the falling object unnerved him. Another thud hit the ground before him, so close he could have reached out and investigated the wound in the soil with his paw, yet caution advised him from doing so. Another thud followed, then another, and he began to think that perhaps it was beginning to hail. Amidst the snow, he saw at last the outline of a person, short for a human, a black smudge amongst the endless white.
