Denise sat in my office across from me, her eyes glued to the papers I was sorting through. I had invited her here today because my schedule was relatively lighter, and I knew that she and I could be here together without me getting too engrossed in my work.
The truth was that I just wanted to spend time with her and let her watch me work so she wouldn't feel alone. My duties often kept me busy, and I couldn't always be by her side, which sometimes left her feeling alone, and the fight we had the last time still came to mind from time to time, and I wanted to avoid it from happening again.
As I shuffled the documents, her voice broke the silence. "Brandon, can I ask you a question without you getting upset?" she asked, her tone soft and cautious.
