Chapter 17

1042 Words
“You consume me,” Blake. - Present time – Blake walked out into the clearing behind the house, finding a log. He sat as he longingly looked out the mountain view. He needed to think, to gather his thoughts. Everything Danny said was said in hate. She hated him, and he didn’t blame her. All those years in school. He could have just ignored her. But to have allowed his pack members to bully her. That was just disgusting. Blake was at the point of no return; he had tasted Danny. He loved her all his life, even before he knew they were mates; what is not to love about her. He decided he would accept her, but what would happen if she did? Hasn’t she already? “How long have you two been dating?” Lucas breaks the monologue in his head. “Huh? Not dating. It's not what you think?” Blake answers, “Hmm, not dating. Makes sense.” Lucas sits next to Blake on the log. “Makes sense what?” Blake muttered nonchalantly “Makes sense why you’re here, alone, if I might add, beating yourself about your fight.” “There is nothing between us, Luc.” It is evident from his voice that he was being defensive. “How long?” Lucas ignoring his statement continued his interrogation. “How long? “Again, there is nothing between us?” Blake knew what Lucas was doing; he was always the big brother. He was always the one looking out for each of them. Lucas was concerned, and his trying to get me to admit my feelings for Danny would help our situation. Heck, if he only knew what was at stake. Blake thought to himself. “Nope, you didn’t understand the question. How long have you liked our little Danny girl?” Lucas's tone is a bit serious. “What?” Blake says, acting coy, avoiding Lucas’ gaze. “Don’t f*****g deny it mate. Ever since I saw the two of you together, I knew you felt something for her.” Then Lucas let out a low chuckle. “Am glad to see Danny hasn’t fallen for your bullshit charms.” “Yet,” Blake mutters under his breath. “What?” Lucas asks him suspiciously “Nothing. It’s nice of you to act like a big brother to her, even if..” “Even if we never sought her out?” Lucas arched his eyebrow, “I knew it.” “Know what?” Blakes looks at his friend, confused. “I knew it; you and Danny are no longer friends.” A look of disappointment crossed Lucas’s face. “What makes you think that?” Blake answered defensively. “The fact that she lied earlier this evening when she said you asked her about the Dinner. And again when she talked about you at school. I could always tell when she was lying” Lucas looked proud of himself, like he had deciphered something. “So your point being?” Blake wondered what his friend was getting at. If he was going to get on his case about not being Danny’s friend anymore, why doesn’t he do it?” “Look, I am not here to judge you when I was miles away. But we kept correspondent with her until they moved and lost touch. It’s my fault. I should have tried harder, especially after the incident.” Blake looks away; the incident he means is when Danny attempted to take her own life. That was the worst day of his life; he just got into a fight with Danny. In the rain, he shut her out. All because he wanted to protect her from him, from his shift. Unfortunately, he couldn’t protect her from her own worst enemy, herself. Until this day, Blake blames himself for what Danny did. He looks away from Lucas, consumed by guilt. “We came back, you know, while she was still in the hospital. But she wasn’t herself. She didn’t want to see anyone. And Mr. Matthews was being weird about having us there.” Lucas shook his head as if trying to forget the memory. Both friends sat in silence, taking in the overwhelming emotion of that day. They were just kids back then, but they carried the pain and guilt of failing their friend that faithful evening. Neither friend knew the truth about what happened to Danny, or that wasn’t the first time she took her life. “You came back,” He asked Lucas in surprise. “yes, I don’t mean to pry, but you weren’t even there.” “I was…” Blake wanted to tell his friend everything. He tried to tell him that he was there, and Mr. Matthew threw them out. And that’s when the blasted threat happened—his pack or Danny. Lucas senses something more that his friend wanted to say, but he could also feel him holding back. “What is Blake? You can tell me.” “I was there right after that evening. Mr. Matthew’s asked as to live.” He took a deep breath and continued, “He blamed me for it.’ “What?” Lucas said in disbelief, “He couldn’t be serious. Maybe he was just beyond himself.” “Nope, he was clear he blamed me for it.” It may not have been entirely the truth, but for Blake, it was enough to help unburden the guilt he had carried in his heart all these years. He finally was able to tell someone how he honestly. “He practically kicked my dad and me out. He warned me to stay away from Danny. That’s why we are no longer friends.” “That’s a bit extreme? What can he hold over you and your family to make you stay away from Danny.” Lucas pressed further. “It doesn’t matter, does it. It’s enough to scare my dad” He couldn’t tell him about wolves. Lucas and Jacob were humans; he would have smelled it if they were wolves. Even though he once thought they were when they were younger due to the strength and size of the twins.
