Javier stood rooted in place and stared ahead, at Fiona.
While growing up, Javier had asked his father why he did not shift when he became the right age to do so.
"You are destined to be mateless", Rowan had told him, leaving Javier saddened.
He believed that lie for years, because of the way some treat their mate in the pack.
He caught his father's beta having an affair with the head warrior's mate, which made him believe his father and thought to himself that he would be better off without a mate in his life. But, as he grew up, the older pack members could not help but gossip about the cursed one.
They tried keeping the gossip low-key, but Javier found out anyway.
"I pity our alpha, he will never know what it feels like to have a mate", one beta wolf had said to her friend, unknown to them that Javier was just around the corner and listening to their conversations.
"Yes, the former Alpha shouldn't have placed a curse on him, I know he is a bastard child, but an alpha nonetheless", the other one replied with a sigh
"I hope one day, he gets to break the curse and feel what having a mate is like", and with that final note, they left for their chores.
What was done was done, Javier had heard and with that rage went to confront his father.
"Why did you put a curse on me?" He questioned, not bothering to beat around the bush
Rowan sighed and looked up from the book he was reading.
"It had to be done, son", he sighed and Javier scoffed
" I am not even your son, am I?"
"Even if you are not biologically mine, I raised you when your w***e of others could not think of anything else than to cheat on her goddess-given mate, so don't ask questions and just accept your fate as it is", Rowan replied irritatedly.
No matter how much he tried to overlook the sins of his mate, he could see her semblance in Javier and it caused him pain. Since then Javier had accepted his fate and got the fact that he would be mateless and would not have a wolf until that fateful day when he felt what he had heard the others feel when they met their mate. The pull.
"Are you okay alpha?" Lowell asked again while staring at where his alpha was looking. Fiona was long gone from the spot, but Javier could not find it in himself to look away from there.
"That's our seat alpha", Trey said while pointing to the vacant booth. Javier nodded and went to take a seat.
He could not exactly explain how he was feeling or what he was feeling in general, what even irritated him was the presence of humans. He hates having to socialize, but his alpha vows prevent him from escaping the dinner he was invited to after so long.
As he sat quietly observing, the waitress that would take their order came, and there stood the girl that caused Javier to have more feelings than he has ever had in his lifetime in one night. He could not help but stare.
Fiona felt a stare at her when she got to the table which order she was supposed to take.
"Are you gentlemen ready to order?", She asked in her soft voice.
"Ha! Yes", Trey replied with so much enthusiasm. Fiona recognized the man, Trey from the other night, he was the one his friends were teasing her about. The one checking her out.
Fiona smiled back at Trey, and despite him being a wolf and knowing he was supposed to wait for his mate, he could not help but feel some sort of attraction towards Fiona. Javier could feel the unspoken words between the two, Trey and Fiona and he did not like the fact that she was paying more attention to Trey than to him. So, he snapped.
"Stop acting like a w***e and take our orders, will you"
Gasps were heard around the table, everyone knew how filter-less Javier could be and how ruthless he could behave when he was angry or things are not going his way, but nothing untoward had happened to warrant the kind of behavior he was throwing at the poor girl.
"Javier!" Lowell shouted, he was the only one brave enough to call his alpha by name and scold him. After all, he was the man's best friend and beta.
"What!? She was making eyes at him being all flirty", he snapped, dropped the napkin he was holding, and stormed out of the restaurant. "I'm out of here"
While the whole scene unraveled, Fiona could do nothing but stare wide-eyed, mouth hung open, she had never in her life received such an insult from any man. She was angry, frustrated that she couldn't do anything, but most of all she was in anticipation of the next time he would meet the man and give him a piece of her mind. Nobody will take her for granted.
"I am so sorry, I feel like this is my fault", Trey apologized remorsefully.
"No, Trey, this one is on me", Lowell started. " I shouldn't have invited him to come with us today, I knew he was in a bad mood, but now he has taken it out on the poor girl", Lowell hung his head low.
" No, it is fine, you should not have to excuse his behavior, he was rude and that is on him and him alone, no one else", Fiona told them with a smile.
The whole table looked at her in awe, they had never met a person so calm and ready to forgive and forget such a rude encounter. Little did they know that Fiona was already planning her revenge inside of herself.
The whole group ate their food and it was time for them to leave.
"We should leave a large tip for her, to compensate for the insult she had to endure tonight", a woman suggested and the whole table agreed, nodding.
"Did you guys enjoy your meal?" Fiona asked with a soft smile as she approach their table.
"Yes, thank you and I am sorry once again for my friend earlier", Lowell said to her.
"As I said, it is fine", she went to pack the table. " Have a good night gentlemen and ladies", she addressed them and turned to leave. Trey stopped her.
"I'm sorry, Fiona", he looked at her name tag. "Can I have your phone number please?" He asked.
"Okay", Fiona responded s if on track, maybe it was time she got into a relationship, she thought to herself.
"Oh thanks, I'll call you", Trey left with that promise.
"Is she your mate?" Lowell asked as they stepped outside
"No, beta, but something pulls me to her, and I like her already", Trey almost blushed.
"You're a good man and an even better warrior, I trust you will treat her well", Lowell said, with a threatening undertone. Even if everyone treated their mate like nothing, Lowell stays faithful to the rule of treating mates right, and he was yet to find his.
"Thank you, beta".
After Javier left the restaurant, he wanted nothing more than to shift and run into the woods like his pack members do when they are angry and confused. It calms them, being in nature. Despite not having his wolf, Javier ventured into the forest anyways, intending to cool off, and probably at the end of the night, he would be able to figure out what is going on with him.
Trey felt contented, having collected Fiona's phone number. He called her in the night and was relieved the moment her voice flowed through the phone speaker.
"Hello, who is this?" She asked.
"Uh, this is Trey, the man from the restaurant", he replied, making her smile at his awkwardness.
"Did you get home safe?" She asked and he nodded, forgetting that he was on the phone. "Hello, are you there?" Having heard no response, Fiona got worried.
"Yes, yes I am here, I got home safely, and you?"
"I did too, thank you"
"And I want to apologize again for my alpha, earlier, he was probably just having a bad day", Trey explained.
"Alpha?, Is that some sort of nickname?", Fiona chuckled making Trey's eyes widen, he had slipped. They were not allowed to reveal their secret to humans unless they were one of their mates.
"Yes, it's a nickname, like an alpha man, you know, like the boss", he rambled, covering up his slip-up.
"Oh, okay, ar--" before Fiona could finish her statement, her brother walked into the room.
"You're back!" Joshua exclaimed excitedly, he loved his sister more than anyone else in the world. "Oh, you're on call, is it Bella? I wanna talk to her", he said
"Yes, I am on call, and no it is not Bella, it is someone else, so you should go, I'll come to find you when I'm done", all while the brother and sister were having their conversation, Trey stayed silent on the other side of the line.
"Someone?, Is it someone I know?", Joshua mused
"No! Go now Josh, I'll come to find you", Fiona promised, leaving a pout on the seventeen year old. Fiona and her little brother were probably the closest siblings to ever exist. Their bond was unbreakable as it should be because their mother was never home, and their father walked out on them when they were little.
"Okay, okay", Josh raised his hands and left the room.
"I'm sorry you have to listen to that, Trey", Fiona sighed.
" Yeah, it's fine, it's good to know you are close to your family", he chuckled and they resumed their conversation.
At the end of the night, they had a date set, one which Fiona could not wait for the day to come. Neither could Trey.
The next day, Fiona walked to her workplace with a smile on her face, she could not wait to tell her friends that she got herself a date.
She looked across the street and saw the man that insulted her last night, something snapped inside of her telling her to cross the street and give the man a piece of her mind, and she obliged.
But, the moment Javier saw the intention in her eyes, he left the spot he was standing in and disappeared into the crowd, making it hard for Fiona to find him.
"Next time, rude man, next time", Fiona promised herself and went back to her journey toward her place of work.
"Tell me everything, I was not able to ask because I was tired last night", Bella pulled her into the staff room the moment she stepped into the restaurant, they still had a few minutes before their shift started.
"Chill, Bella, we just exchanged numbers, he did not even call me, Fiona denied. Bella sighed.
"Fiona, I love you and all, but you are a shitty liar, you cannot lie to save your skin, so tell me the truth now", Bella demanded
"What do you mean I cannot lie?" Fiona gasped, making Bella roll her eyes. "Fine, he called, we talked and now I have a date", she summarized.
"Oh", an excited gasp escaped Bella as she hugged her friend. "I used to think you would die single, now that's averted"
"Oh, Bella, stop being dramatic, it's just a date, not like I'm getting married to the guy, it's probably nothing, but I wanna explore", Fiona confessed.
"Oh, Explore, exploring is good, my friend, it's good", Bella said, extending the 'Oh'.
Fiona rolled her eyes and quickly dressed in her staff uniform to get started on her shift.
Trey liked Fiona in all honesty, but no matter how much they talked, he still felt like something was missing. And they have talked so much, on many topics, ranging from their favorite things to do, to how they both love the same thing, family. Although Trey could not come clean about his family, Pack, he still made it clear to her that he loved his family and would do anything for them.
As Trey and Fiona planned their date, Javier was restless and could not get Fiona out of his head, he knew that Trey was getting closer to her, as he had been tracking the guy in his every move. He knew he had to apologize to Fiona and speak to her, but his ego was too fragile and big for that, so he watched them from afar.
On the day of their date, they had both agreed to meet at a restaurant that Fiona was not working at. When Trey set his eyes on her, he could not look away, even though something was missing from her, he still found her attractive.
"You look beautiful, Fiona", he complimented her
"Thank you"
"To be honest, I was nervous about tonight, but seeing you now, all the nerves seem to have washed away", Trey said
"Oh, I am glad to know I was not the only one nervous", she replied.
They started on light conversions, unknown to them that they were being watched. By Javier.
As the said Alpha sat in a corner at the restaurant the two dates were sitting, he was fuming, he wanted to separate them, but he knew that would mean standing up to confront Fiona, something he was not ready to do. So, he opted for watching from afar.
If he had been prepared for what it means to be mates, maybe he would know how to act, but there was nothing he could do. He watched as Fiona would let out a soft laugh at whatever Trey was saying. The more Trey and Fiona laughed together, the more irritated Javier became until he could not watch anymore. If anyone were to see him at that moment, he would be accused of murder, because the look in his eyes says it all. He wanted so badly to be the one in that spot Trey was sitting in, but he did not understand what it was.
He stood up abruptly, with just a thought in his very irritated mind.
To separate them.
And that was exactly what he did.
