Evelyn is still behind the closed bathroom door when Emma blows me a kiss followed by a rude gesture and departs. By that time, the pain in my shoulder has become so intense that it nearly blocks out Emma’s thoughts.
It would be a relief if the pain weren’t so all-consuming.
A few minutes later, I’m considering calling for Evelyn to check on the pain reliever from Dr. Zorinski when a knock sounds on my door. I invite them in quickly, hoping it’s the doctor.
I’m in so much pain, I hardly have it in me to feel disappointed to see Sophia.
Her eyes widen at the sight of me. “Your Majesty,” she curtsies, taking care not to spill a glass in her hand. “Dr. Zorinski sent me with your requested pain reliever.”
This is probably the most grateful I will ever feel for Sophia’s company
