14.I walked back to the gated house and stood observing the few police squad cars in the driveway. I figured with the local PD snooping around, it would be a good time to check out of the hotel, so I crossed through the waterfront park, turned left at the U.S. Custom House, and traveled up the street all the way to the hotel. The air was cool and the late afternoon sun was tepid. I rode the elevator up to my room, collected all my things, and then rode the elevator all the way down to the parking garage. I tossed my travel sack in my trunk and dropped into the driver seat, then cruised out of the garage to the front of the hotel. I saw Tommy outside. He was talking to another valet.
