16.The sound of helicopter rotors cut across the air and reverberated through the hangar. Then I saw it, an orange and white helicopter—the Coast Guard. They were coming in from the coast on the far end of the airstrip. Everyone was frozen. There was a moment of silence when everyone was processing exactly what had happened, drawn out a few more seconds by the sound of sirens wailing from the direction of the lighthouse. I quickly forced myself out of the frozen state. I needed to make a move.
