THE WEDDING

1896 Words
The wedding was supposed to be the happiest day of Bella Hart's life. Instead, it felt suspiciously like a sentencing. She stood in front of the enormous mirror in the bridal suite and stared at her reflection. The dress was beautiful. Almost offensively beautiful. Ivory silk fitted her perfectly before falling into a long train behind her. Tiny crystals caught the light whenever she moved, making the fabric shimmer. Her dark-brown hair had been styled into soft waves, with a few strands left loose around her face. The diamond earrings weren't hers. The necklace wasn't hers either. Neither was the mansion. Neither was the life waiting downstairs. Bella touched the small pendant beneath her dress. Her mother's. The one thing she had refused to let anyone take from her. She closed her eyes and took a slow breath. One year. She could survive one year. A knock sounded. Before she could answer, the door opened. Amelia Sterling stepped inside and stopped. “Oh.” Bella raised an eyebrow. “Is that good or bad?” “Very good.” Amelia smiled. “You look incredible.” Bella looked at herself again. “That's the problem.” The smile on Amelia's face faded. “You don't have to do this if you don't want to.” Bella met her eyes through the mirror. “I do.” “Because of your father's estate?” “Because of the truth.” Amelia walked closer. “And Alexander?” Bella's expression tightened. “Alexander is part of the problem.” Amelia sighed. “That might be the first completely accurate thing anyone has said about my brother today.” Bella almost smiled. Then voices drifted up from downstairs. Guests. Reporters. Cameras. The entire Sterling world seemed to have gathered to watch her marry the man who had spent years believing her family had destroyed his. Her stomach tightened. Amelia noticed. “Ready?” Bella gave her an honest answer. “No.” “Good.” Amelia slipped her arm through Bella's. “Neither is my brother.” --- Downstairs, Alexander Sterling stood beneath a chandelier worth more than most people's houses. He looked exactly as he always did. Controlled. Immaculate. Untouchable. His black tuxedo fit his broad shoulders perfectly, and his dark hair had been brushed back from his face. Around him, businessmen, celebrities, investors, and members of old-money families talked over champagne. Alexander ignored most of them. His attention kept drifting toward the staircase. He told himself it was because the wedding was about to begin. Nothing more. Sebastian appeared beside him. “You look thrilled.” Alexander glanced at him. “Do I?” “You look like you're attending your own execution.” “I'm considering it.” Sebastian chuckled. “Most men smile at their weddings.” “I'm not most men.” “No argument there.” Alexander's gaze moved toward the staircase again. And then Bella appeared. His thoughts stopped. For one brief second, he simply watched her. The ivory dress followed her movements without making her look uncomfortable or overly decorated. Her hair fell softly over one shoulder. She looked— Alexander stopped himself. Beautiful was irrelevant. She was Daniel Hart's daughter. His enemy's daughter. His wife. A woman he had deliberately brought into his life because he wanted answers. Because he wanted revenge. Nothing about her appearance changed that. Nothing. “You're staring.” Alexander looked at Sebastian. “I'm not.” “You absolutely are.” Alexander handed him his glass. “Hold this.” Sebastian looked at the glass, then at him. “Why?” “Because apparently you're more interested in my eyes than I am.” Sebastian grinned. “Ah. So we're pretending you weren't just staring at your bride like—” “Finish that sentence and you'll be looking for another job.” Sebastian wisely stopped talking. Alexander turned back. Bella was already coming down the stairs. Their eyes met. She slowed for half a second. Alexander noticed. So did she. And then she continued toward him. Bella hated the small reaction her body gave when she saw him. Alexander looked unfairly good in a tuxedo. More polished than usual. More dangerous too. She reminded herself that a handsome face didn't make a man trustworthy. Especially not this man. When she reached him, Alexander extended his arm. Bella hesitated before taking it. His sleeve brushed against her fingers. That tiny contact was enough for Alexander to become aware of every inch of space between them. He kept his face neutral. Bella glanced at him. “Are you all right?” “I'm fine.” “You look tense.” “I'm always tense.” “That sounds exhausting.” His mouth almost moved. Almost. The photographer called out. “Mr. Sterling! Mrs. Sterling! Over here!” Mrs. Sterling. Bella wasn't sure she was ever going to get used to hearing that. Alexander placed a hand lightly against the small of her back as they turned toward the cameras. The gesture was perfectly appropriate for newlyweds. It also lasted less than two seconds. Alexander removed his hand. Bella looked at him. “What?” “Nothing.” “You keep doing that.” “Doing what?” “Pulling away whenever you touch me.” Alexander's eyes settled on hers. “Perhaps you should stop noticing.” “Perhaps you should stop doing it.” Before he could answer, the photographer called again. “Closer, please!” Bella stepped nearer. Their shoulders touched. Alexander's posture went rigid. He stared straight ahead. Bella noticed. Again. “You're doing it again.” His eyes moved toward her. “Doing what?” “Trying not to breathe.” She was fighting a smile. Alexander stared at her. “You enjoy irritating me.” “More than I expected.” The camera flashed. For one brief moment, they looked like a real couple. Beautiful. Elegant. Completely in love. The photographs would never show what was actually happening between them. The suspicion. The anger. The carefully hidden attraction. The contract neither of them had forgotten. --- The ceremony began at noon. Hundreds of guests filled the grand hall. The Sterling family crest hung behind the altar, surrounded by white flowers and candles. Reporters stood at the back with cameras raised. Bella walked down the aisle alone. Every step felt heavier than the one before it. She could feel people watching. Some were curious. Some were judging her. Others were clearly waiting for something to go wrong. She kept her chin up. At the altar, Alexander waited. His expression gave nothing away. When she reached him, he extended his hand. Bella placed hers in it. His fingers closed around hers. Warm. Steady. She hadn't realized her hand was trembling until he felt it. For a moment, his grip tightened as though he might reassure her. Then he seemed to remember himself. His fingers loosened. Bella noticed. Of course she did. The priest began speaking. Words about commitment. Trust. Partnership. Forever. Bella nearly laughed at that last one. Forever wasn't part of their agreement. One year. That was all. When it was Alexander's turn to speak his vows, his voice was calm. “I do.” Bella swallowed. The priest turned to her. She looked at Alexander. Those dark eyes gave nothing away. “I do.” Applause filled the room. Alexander barely seemed to hear it. He was too conscious of the woman standing beside him. When the priest smiled and said, “You may seal your marriage,” Alexander went still. Bella's eyes widened. Neither of them had discussed this part. The room waited. Cameras lifted. Alexander leaned closer. Bella's breath caught. His gaze dropped briefly toward her lips. For one dangerous second, the rest of the room disappeared. Then Alexander stopped. He stepped back. “Not necessary,” he said. Silence. A few guests exchanged uncomfortable looks. The priest cleared his throat. “Of course.” Bella stared at Alexander. Heat climbed into her cheeks. She had expected the marriage to be cold. She had expected him to make it clear that this was an arrangement. She hadn't expected him to reject the one public gesture that would have made them look like an ordinary married couple. Humiliation flashed through her. She buried it before anyone else could see. Alexander offered his arm. Bella took it. Her fingers were cold. He felt the difference immediately. Something uncomfortable moved through him. Regret. He pushed it aside. --- The reception lasted for hours. Music filled the ballroom. Champagne flowed. People congratulated them. Bella smiled whenever someone approached. Alexander spoke with investors and executives. They played their parts well. The billionaire and his elegant new bride. A perfect match. A perfect wedding. A perfect lie. Inside, Bella felt trapped. The mansion was enormous, yet she couldn't shake the feeling that someone was always watching. She looked across the ballroom. Alexander stood surrounded by powerful men, listening to something one of them was saying. Then his eyes found hers. He stopped listening. For several seconds, they simply looked at each other. Bella couldn't explain what she saw in his face. It wasn't hatred. Not entirely. There was something else. Something she couldn't put a name to. Alexander looked away first. Bella turned back toward the window. She hated that she noticed. She hated even more that she felt disappointed. --- Late that evening, the final guests began leaving. The photographers packed their equipment. The music faded. The ballroom slowly emptied. Bella stood beside the tall windows, looking out at the city lights. One year. She repeated the words silently. One year to uncover the truth. One year to find out what really happened to Richard Sterling. One year to prove her father hadn't betrayed him. Footsteps approached behind her. She didn't turn. “Are you always this quiet after a wedding?” Alexander's voice. Bella looked over her shoulder. “Are you always this difficult?” “Usually.” She almost smiled. Silence settled between them. Then Alexander said, “We're leaving.” Bella turned fully. “Where?” “Sterling Mansion.” The words made something tighten in her chest. His home. Their home. She picked up her handbag. “Let's go.” Alexander watched her walk past him. His gaze followed her for a moment longer than it should have. He looked away. He had made a deal with himself. One year. No love. No weakness. No falling for Bella Hart. He had brought her into his life because he intended to uncover everything her family had hidden. He didn't yet understand that the moment Bella stepped into his world, she had already begun destroying something far more dangerous than his revenge. His certainty. Outside, a black car waited. Neither of them noticed the man standing across the street. Watching. Waiting. The stranger lifted his phone. “They're married.” A pause. His expression changed. “Yes. She's inside the Sterling family now.” He listened. Then a slow smile appeared. “Exactly where we wanted her.” He ended the call and disappeared into the darkness. Inside the car, Bella stared through the window. Beside her, Alexander remained silent. Neither knew that the wedding hadn't ended the war between their families. It had just brought the real players onto the board.
