STERLING MANSION

Bella didn't sleep. Not because the bed was uncomfortable. Quite the opposite. The mattress was softer than anything she had ever slept on, the sheets felt like clouds, and the room was so quiet that she could hear the faint ticking of an antique clock somewhere in the hallway. But every time she closed her eyes, she heard Alexander's voice. Someone has been watching you. Bella opened her eyes again. The ceiling stared back at her. She turned onto her side. Someone had been watching her. Who? And why? She had spent years digging through her father's past, but until now, she had always believed the danger was buried in old documents and financial records. Now she wasn't so sure. Bella reached beneath her pillow and touched the silver pendant around her neck. Her mother's pendant. She had worn it beneath her wedding dress. She had worn it through every difficult moment of her life. For some reason, touching it calmed her. Tonight, it didn't. She sat up. Moonlight spilled through the curtains. Her gaze moved around the room. Everything was unfamiliar. The furniture. The paintings. The enormous windows. The unfamiliar silence. This wasn't her home. It was Alexander's. And now, according to the marriage certificate sitting somewhere downstairs, it was hers too. For one year. Bella slipped out of bed. She opened the balcony doors. Cold night air brushed her face. The grounds stretched endlessly beneath her. Security lights illuminated the gardens. Two guards stood near the main entrance. Another patrolled the eastern side. Alexander hadn't been exaggerating. This place was a fortress. Bella rested her hands on the railing. Then she noticed something. A light. Far beyond the gardens. Near the old stone wall. It appeared for a moment. Then disappeared. Bella frowned. She leaned forward. Nothing. Probably a passing car. She stepped back. "You're going to freeze." Bella spun around. Alexander stood inside her room. Her heart nearly jumped out of her chest. "What are you doing here?" He looked at her. "I knocked." "I didn't hear you." "I noticed." He was no longer wearing his tuxedo. Instead, he had changed into dark trousers and a black shirt with the sleeves rolled to his forearms. Bella immediately wished she hadn't noticed his arms. Strong. Tense. Veins visible beneath his skin. She forced her eyes back to his face. "What do you want?" "To make sure you locked the balcony." She glanced behind her. "It is locked." "It wasn't." Bella frowned. "What?" Alexander walked toward the doors. She instinctively stepped aside. He checked the lock. His fingers brushed the handle. "Now it is." Bella folded her arms. "You came all the way here to check my balcony?" "Yes." "Why?" "Because I told you to lock your door." "My door was locked." "Then your balcony wasn't." "You're very controlling." "I've been called worse." Bella stared at him. "Do you check every employee's balcony?" "No." "Every guest?" "No." "Your sister?" "Absolutely not." She raised an eyebrow. "Then why mine?" Alexander looked at her. For a second, neither spoke. Because the answer was simple. Because you're in danger. But saying it aloud felt too much like admitting he cared. So he said the only thing that didn't expose him. "You're my responsibility now." Bella's expression hardened. "I'm not a possession." "I didn't say you were." "You said responsibility." "There's a difference." "Not when you're Alexander Sterling." His jaw tightened. "You don't know me well enough to say that." "Neither do you." The words landed harder than she intended. Something flickered across his face. Then disappeared. Alexander stepped toward the door. "Get some sleep." Bella watched him. "Alexander." He stopped. "Thank you." He didn't turn. "For what?" "For checking." Silence. His shoulders relaxed almost imperceptibly. Then he left. Bella stared at the closed door. She didn't understand him. Not even slightly. --- Alexander walked down the hallway. He should have gone to bed. Instead, he stopped outside Bella's door. He stared at it. What was he doing? He had no reason to personally check her room. His security team could do it. He had people whose entire job was protecting the mansion. Yet when he had noticed the balcony light still on, he'd found himself walking toward her room before he could think better of it. Then he'd seen her standing beneath the moonlight. Barefoot. Her hair falling around her shoulders. Wearing a simple silk robe. For one dangerous second, he'd forgotten everything. His eyes had travelled over her before his mind could intervene. The curve of her shoulder. The softness of her skin. The delicate line of her throat. His body had responded immediately. Heat had rushed through him. His breathing had changed. And he'd hated himself for every second of it. He had wanted to step closer. Wanted to touch her. Wanted to know what her skin felt like beneath his fingertips. Alexander clenched his fists. No. He couldn't think like that. She was Bella Hart. Daniel Hart's daughter. His revenge. He turned away from the door. Then stopped again. A sound came from downstairs. Alexander's expression changed. He moved silently toward the staircase. --- Bella was about to return to bed when she heard voices. She frowned. The mansion was supposed to be quiet. She opened her door slightly. Voices drifted from downstairs. One belonged to Alexander. The other sounded older. Male. Bella couldn't make out the words. Curiosity won. She stepped into the hallway. She descended several stairs before stopping. Below, Alexander stood in the entrance hall with an older man in a dark suit. The man looked nervous. Alexander looked furious. "What do you mean you found nothing?" "We searched the perimeter twice." "Then search it again." "Mr. Sterling—" "Again." The man nodded quickly. "Yes, sir." Bella watched from the staircase. Alexander's voice had changed. This wasn't the controlled billionaire from the boardroom. This was something darker. Something frightening. The man left through a side door. Alexander remained still. His shoulders were tense. His hands were clenched. Bella descended another step. The floor creaked. Alexander looked up. Their eyes met. His expression hardened immediately. "What are you doing?" Bella stopped. "I heard voices." "You should be in bed." "I couldn't sleep." "Go back upstairs." She descended the rest of the staircase. "What happened?" "Nothing." "You don't look like nothing happened." His eyes narrowed. "Bella." She folded her arms. "Someone was searching the grounds." Alexander went silent. She knew she'd caught him. "Why?" "It's security." "At two in the morning?" "Security doesn't have office hours." "You're avoiding the question." "I'm protecting you." The words slipped out before he could stop them. Bella stared at him. Alexander's jaw tightened. He hadn't meant to say that. She stepped closer. "From whom?" "I don't know." That answer frightened her more than anything else could have. "You don't know?" "We found signs someone had been near the eastern wall." Bella's stomach dropped. "The light I saw." Alexander's gaze sharpened. "What light?" "From my balcony. Near the wall." He stepped toward her. "What did you see?" "A light." "Anything else?" "No." "When?" "Maybe ten minutes before you came upstairs." Alexander pulled out his phone. "Why didn't you tell me?" "I didn't think it mattered." "It matters." His voice was sharper now. Bella's eyes narrowed. "Don't yell at me." "I'm not yelling." "You are." Alexander stopped. He took a breath. Then another. He deliberately lowered his voice. "I'm sorry." Bella blinked. She hadn't expected that. Alexander rarely apologized. He looked away. "Did you see a person?" "No." "A vehicle?" "I don't know." "Did you hear anything?" "No." He nodded. Then reached for his phone. "Sebastian." Bella watched him. "Have the eastern cameras reviewed immediately." A pause. "And send two additional guards to the west side." He ended the call. Bella crossed her arms. "You really think someone was here?" "I know someone was." Her pulse quickened. "How?" "There were footprints." The mansion suddenly felt less like a fortress. And more like a target. Bella swallowed. "Alexander..." His gaze softened for half a second. Then he moved closer. "You're safe." She looked at him. "You don't know that." "I do." "How?" "Because no one gets near you without going through me." The words were quiet. Certain. Bella's breath caught. Alexander seemed to realize how they sounded. His eyes shifted away. "That sounded more dramatic than I intended." Bella couldn't help it. She smiled. "Very dramatic." His gaze returned to her. "You think it's funny?" "A little." "You should be frightened." "I am." Her smile disappeared. "Just not of you." Something moved behind Alexander's eyes. He looked at her for a long moment. Then his gaze dropped. Her robe had shifted slightly at her shoulder. He immediately looked away. His jaw tightened. "Bella." "Yes?" "Go upstairs." She tilted her head. "Why?" "Because you're making this unnecessarily difficult." Her eyebrows rose. "How?" He looked at her again. His voice was low. "Just go." Bella studied him. There was something in his expression. Something he was fighting. She didn't know what it was. But she recognized the signs now. The tightened jaw. The controlled breathing. The way his hands curled whenever she stood too close. Alexander was fighting something. And whatever it was, he didn't want her to know. Bella slowly turned toward the staircase. "Goodnight, husband." Alexander froze. She glanced over her shoulder. A tiny smile touched her lips. Then she disappeared upstairs. Alexander stood alone in the entrance hall. Husband. The word shouldn't have affected him. It did. He closed his eyes briefly. This marriage was already becoming more complicated than he had anticipated. --- Across the city, a black car sat parked beneath a dead streetlight. Inside, a man stared at a photograph. The photograph showed Bella leaving the hospital. Another showed Alexander arriving at Sterling Mansion. He placed them side by side. His phone rang. He answered. "She's inside." A voice spoke from the other end. "And Sterling?" "Protecting her." Silence. Then: "Good." The man looked toward the distant mansion. A slow smile appeared. "He's doing exactly what we expected." "And the next step?" The man turned the photograph over. On the back was a single name. DANIEL HART. His smile disappeared. "The next step is to make Alexander Sterling question the woman he just married." He ended the call. Then he started the car. The headlights disappeared into the darkness. Inside Sterling Mansion, Bella Hart was finally beginning to realize something. Her marriage to Alexander Sterling had not simply brought her closer to the truth. It had brought the danger straight to her door.
