Chapter Seven

I learned quickly that peace in Dean Knight’s house was fragile. It existed in small moments, Liam’s laughter echoing down the halls, the quiet rhythm of breakfast, the rare seconds when Dean’s guard slipped, and he looked almost human. But like the Miami tide, it never stayed still for long. By the third week, the whispers began. I didn’t hear them directly at first. I felt them. The way the staff grew quieter when I entered a room. The way Marlene’s polite professionalism sharpened into something colder, her eyes lingering on me just a second too long. Even the security guards, once friendly, now nodded stiffly instead of smiling. Something was changing. I was folding Liam’s tiny shirts in the laundry room when my phone buzzed again. Unknown number. My chest tightened before I even picked it up. You think hiding behind rich people makes you untouchable? My hands shook as I typed. Please stop. I told you I’m working on it. The reply came instantly. Tick tock, Angel. Debts don’t wait. I deleted the message, fighting back tears. I couldn’t let this bleed into my work. Liam didn’t deserve to see me like this. Still, the fear followed me upstairs. Dean was already home when I brought Liam in from the garden that afternoon. That alone was unusual. He stood near the living room windows, jacket off, sleeves rolled up, staring out at the ocean as if it had personally wronged him. When he turned, his expression was hard, too hard. “Angel,” he said. My stomach dropped. “Yes?” “We need to talk.” Liam looked between us, sensing the shift. “Did I do something bad?” “No, buddy,” I said quickly, crouching to his level. “Why don’t you go play for a bit?” He hesitated, then nodded reluctantly and ran off. The moment he disappeared, the air grew thick. Dean crossed his arms. “There are rumors.” I swallowed. “About what?” “About you.” The words stung more than I expected. “What kind of rumors?” Dean hesitated, as if weighing how much to say. “That you’re getting… close. That you’re not just here for Liam.” Heat rushed to my face. “That’s not true.” “Isn’t it?” he asked sharply. The question hit like a slap. “I’ve done nothing inappropriate,” I said, forcing my voice steady. “I take care of your son. That’s it.” Dean paced once, then stopped. “People are watching me, Angel. Everything I do. Everything I allow.” “And I’m a liability?” I whispered. He didn’t answer immediately. That silence hurt the most. “I didn’t ask for this,” I said quietly. “I didn’t ask to be talked about or judged. I just needed a job.” Dean’s eyes flickered with something like regret, but it vanished quickly. “I’m reminding you of the boundaries.” I straightened my shoulders. “I’ve respected them.” “Good,” he said. “Because this ends the moment it stops being professional.” Something inside me cracked. “I understand,” I said softly. But I wasn’t sure he did. That night, Liam had trouble sleeping. He tossed and turned, whimpering softly, his small hand gripping the blanket as if it might disappear. I sat beside him, humming under my breath until his breathing slowed. “Angel?” he whispered. “Yes, sweetheart?” “Are you mad at Daddy?” My heart twisted. “No. Why would you think that?” “You both looked sad today.” I brushed his curls back gently. “Sometimes grown-ups have worries. That’s all.” He nodded sleepily. “You won’t leave, right?” The question felt heavier this time. “I’m here,” I said, choosing my words carefully. “And I care about you.” He smiled faintly and drifted off. I stayed long after he slept. I found Dean on the balcony later, the city lights reflecting off the glass behind him. He held a glass of whiskey he hadn’t touched. “He asked me if I was mad at you,” I said quietly. Dean’s jaw tightened. “I didn’t mean to involve him.” “But you did,” I replied. “Just like you involved me when you hired me.” He turned to face me. “This isn’t personal.” “It feels personal,” I said. “You look at me like I’m a threat.” “Because you are,” he snapped, then stopped, clearly regretting it. Silence stretched between us. “I’m a threat to what?” I asked. “Your reputation? Your control?” “My son,” he said quietly. The honesty in his voice stunned me. “I would never hurt him,” I said, emotion tightening my throat. “I care about him more than you know.” Dean searched my face, something breaking through the armor he wore so well. “I know,” he admitted. “That’s what scares me.” For a moment, neither of us moved. The space between us felt charged, fragile, and dangerous. “I’m not your enemy,” I whispered. Dean looked away. “You should get some rest.” Again. Dismissed. I nodded, turning back toward the house before he could see the tears burning my eyes. The next morning, everything exploded. Marlene intercepted me before breakfast, her face pale. “Dean needs you in his office. Now.” My heart pounded as I followed her, dread coiling in my stomach. Dean stood behind his desk, phone in hand, fury barely contained. “Do you want to explain this?” he demanded, turning the screen toward me. My breath caught. It was a message thread. Screenshots. My name. My father’s debt. How? “Where did you get that?” I whispered. “A business rival,” Dean said coldly. “Someone who thought it would be interesting to suggest that my son’s nanny has… financial motivations.” Tears blurred my vision. “I didn’t tell anyone.” “Then how did they know?” he demanded. “I don’t know,” I cried. “I swear to you, I didn’t do this.” Dean stared at me, torn between anger and something else, something deeper. “You should have told me,” he said. “I was afraid,” I admitted. “I didn’t want you to think I was using you.” The words hung heavy between us. “And now?” he asked bitterly. “Now I know you already do,” I said softly. The silence that followed was devastating. Dean turned away first. “You’re dismissed for the day.” I nodded numbly, my heart breaking as I walked out. As I passed the playroom, Liam looked up, smiling, unaware his world was already starting to crack. And for the first time since I walked into Dean Knight’s life, I wasn’t sure I could protect him from what came next.
