The Aftermath of the Failed Plan
Just then, a faint rustling broke through the roar of the fire. A weak cough came from Sirio as he stirred slightly, his body struggling against the suffocating smoke.
Sirio (groaning): "Ugh… Where… where am I?"
He forced his heavy eyelids open and immediately felt the sting of the smoke. Panic surged through him as he saw the approaching flames. His gaze darted to Alhena and the cat, both still unconscious.
Sirio (coughing): "No… No, this can't be how it ends!"
Mustering all his strength, he dragged himself toward Alhena and shook her gently.
Sirio: "Alhena! Wake up! We have to get out of here!"
But she remained still. He glanced at the cat—its small chest barely rising and falling. The flames crackled louder, the intense heat almost unbearable now.
Sirio (desperate): "Somebody… anyone… help!"
A sudden gust of wind rushed through the hideout, momentarily pushing back the smoke. And then—just for a second—there was silence.
With his weakened body and vision blurring, Sirio struggled to stay conscious. Through the thick smoke, he barely made out a movement—the white cat stirred. Slowly, it stood up, its small form steady despite the encroaching flames.
Sirio tried to reach out, his trembling hand extending toward the cat, as if grasping for a final shred of hope. But before he could see what happened next, his strength gave out. His vision darkened completely, and once again, he slipped into unconsciousness.
The crackling fire roared louder, creeping ever closer. The white cat, now standing firm, turned toward the approaching flames, its blue eyes glowing with an eerie, almost otherworldly light.
Outside, Kreto groaned as he pushed himself up, turning to face the remaining giant bat. His armor bore the mark where its tail had struck—green liquid sizzled against the metal.
"Poison... That thing's tail is venomous," Kreto realized. "Good thing it hit my armor. If that had pierced my skin, I'd be dead by now."
Meanwhile, Polux was still on top of the cave, thinking of a way how to kill the monster. He glanced at his arm and saw a streak of the same green liquid. He quickly wiped it off before it could seep into his skin.
"Venom. So that's its real danger," he muttered.
From above, Polux could see the battle between Kreto and the monstrous bat. It swooped down repeatedly, aiming its stinger-like tail at the towering warrior. But Kreto stood his ground, blocking each strike with his massive shield.
Seizing an opportunity, Kreto sprinted toward Polux’s position. Just as he reached him, the bat dived again from the cave ceiling, aiming straight for his back.
"Incoming!" Polux shouted.
But Kreto didn’t dodge. Instead, he hurled his massive axe directly at the bat. The creature twisted mid-air and stopped, barely avoiding the weapon.
And that was its mistake.
It never saw Polux.
Leaping from above, Polux caught the airborne axe and, with a powerful swing, slashed the bat clean through the back. The beast let out a guttural shriek as it was split in two, its halves crashing onto the rocky ground below.
Without wasting a second, Kreto sprinted back to the entrance of the hideout. As he reached the boulder blocking it, his heart pounded. The heat was intense.
He shoved the massive rock aside—and froze.
Thick, black smoke billowed out. Inside, the cavern was ablaze. He could barely see through the haze, but as the flames flickered, he caught sight of Alhena and Sirio.
And something else.
A giant, white creature was curled around them, shielding them from the fire. It was bigger than Kreto himself. But as he stepped closer, the figure dissolved into the form of a small cat.
Blue.
The cat leaped off Alhena and Sirio just as Kreto rushed in and scooped them up. He carried them out of the burning hideout just as Polux arrived.
Without hesitation, Polux grabbed Alhena, who was unconscious, holding her close. Kreto, meanwhile, hoisted Sirio onto his shoulder like a sack of rice.
"Alhena, wake up!" Polux pleaded.
Kreto shook Sirio roughly. "If you don’t wake up, twig, I’m going to eat you."
Sirio's eyes flew open. "I’M AWAKE! I’M AWAKE!" He scrambled out of Kreto’s grip, gasping.
At the same time, Alhena stirred. As soon as she saw Polux, she threw her arms around him, sobbing.
"Polux… I thought something happened to you… I was more scared of losing you than of those monsters!"
Polux hugged her back. "I’m sorry… I took too long. But it’s over now. We’re safe."
She pulled away slightly, wiping her tears but smiling. "Thank you, Polux. And Kreto… I’m glad you made it. And Sirio, if it weren’t for you, we wouldn’t have known the Oro Stone’s power and survive."
Kreto smirked. "Hah! So the twig has guts after all."
Sirio puffed out his chest. "Of course! I told you, I’m brave!"
Kreto grinned. "Oh really? Then you should know—there’s still a bat right behind you."
Sirio’s face paled. In a panic, he grabbed the Oro Stone, ready to activate it.
"OY, OY—RELAX! It was a joke!" Kreto, Polux, and Alhena shouted at the same time.
Sirio hesitated, glancing behind him. When he realized there was no bat, he clutched his chest in relief.
The group burst into laughter.
And then—
PRRRT!
Kreto let out a loud fart again from laughing too hard.
That only made them laugh even harder while holding each noses, their voices echoing through the cave as they finally felt the weight of their ordeal lift.
"A Small Hero"
"Meow! Meow!"
A familiar sound made them all turn around. Behind them, the small, soot-covered cat sat, its blue eyes gleaming in the dim light.
Alhena immediately scooped it up, cradling it gently. "Blue! Thank God You’re okay!" she whispered, relieved.
Sirio reached out and scratched the cat’s head. "You were really brave back there, you know," he said, grinning. "If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t have been able to grab the Oro Stone in time."
The cat purred in response, rubbing its head against Sirio’s hand before turning its gaze toward Kreto.
For a moment, the two locked eyes.
Kreto furrowed his brows. "What? What are you looking at, furball?"
Blue just blinked slowly and continued staring.
Alhena chuckled. "I think he likes you, Kreto."
Kreto crossed his arms. "Tch. I don’t trust that cat."
At that, Blue suddenly leaped from Alhena’s arms and landed squarely on Kreto’s shoulder. The massive warrior stiffened, completely caught off guard.
Sirio burst out laughing. "Looks like the feeling’s mutual!"
Polux smirked. "Kreto, I think you’ve made a new friend."
Kreto scowled but didn’t push the cat away. Instead, he let out a long sigh. "Hmph. Fine. But if you fart on my shoulder, I’m throwing you."
Blue simply curled up on Kreto’s broad shoulder, letting out a soft, contented
"Meow."
The group shared a tired but genuine laugh.
Despite everything they had been through, despite the danger and exhaustion, at that moment, they felt lighter.
Because they weren’t just survivors.
They were a team.
And their journey was far from over.
