Chapter Two: The Marriage Contract

Shengshi Corporation. In the prime CBD financial district of S City, the towering Shengshi Corporation stands like a colossal pillar, its thirty-three floors reaching skyward. The building's opulent exterior reflects its prestigious name, radiating an air of grandeur. Every graduation season, countless high-achieving graduates vie to get a position within this building, seeking high salaries, generous benefits, and prestigious recognition. Even though it’s not graduation season now, the building remains bustling with activity. People come and go, each one engrossed in their work, eager to stretch every minute into two. On the top floor, in the president’s office. Leaf Lan Cheng, the president of Shengshi Corporation, who is usually busier than all his employees, is unusually relaxed at this moment. The documents on his expensive desk are neither multi-billion dollar contracts from business partners nor urgent files from various departments. They are not even items worth sacrificing office time for. Yet, despite the lack of commercial value, he is engrossed in reading this document. His eyes are locked on it, meticulously scanning each line and paragraph. Opposite him sits An Zhisu, her back straight, the large chair making her appear exceptionally slender. Her hands, clasped in her lap, betray her nervousness, which she struggles to suppress, trying not to let him see through her. The man is tall, and even seated, his height is enough to dwarf An Zhisu. The afternoon sunlight casts a shadow from behind him, enveloping An Zhisu as if a mountain were pressing down on her, making it hard for her to breathe. An Zhisu thinks, after fifteen years, Ye Lancheng has grown even more formidable than he was as a child. At the same time, he is more handsome than before. She steals glances at him, his rugged features, sharp angles, and cold, intimidating profile exuding an aura of unapproachability. Even his once-soft eyelashes now seem harsh against his indifferent eyes. He is indeed a man whose handsomeness could rival the cosmos; if only he were a bit gentler, An Zhisu imagines she might have been his devoted fan. “You want to get engaged to me?” Ye Lancheng finally looks up from the document, his gaze fixed on An Zhisu. An Zhisu had brought a thick engagement agreement, which she had asked Song Jiaran to draft in advance. “Yes!” An Zhisu met his indifferent gaze with her own, mustering the courage to hold eye contact, her eyes filled with determination. “Is this for real?” Ye Lancheng’s voice carried an evident note of surprise. “Yes!” An Zhisu’s response was even more resolute. Clang! Ye Lancheng closed the engagement agreement and threw out two words: “Why?” Ye Lancheng was puzzled. If he remembered correctly, he hadn’t seen this woman in fifteen years. Since attending her mother’s funeral with his own mother when she was ten, they had had no contact. Without that jade pendant, he might not have even recognized her. “Didn’t you say that if I came to you with the jade pendant, you would repay me for saving your life?” An Zhisu steadied her nerves and pointed to the jade pendant lying on the desk beside him. Ye Lancheng nodded, admitting he had made that promise, though he hadn’t expected this would be the form of repayment she sought. An engagement? Ye Lancheng’s curiosity was piqued for the first time in ages. He pressed his thin lips together and said, “I need to understand the reason behind your decision before I can consider agreeing.” “Do you want the truth?” An Zhisu asked。
