POV: Amara
I quickly looked away from Prince Alejandro.
My heart was beating faster than I wanted to admit.
Why is he staring at me like that?
In the original story, the prince rarely looked at the villainess unless it was with annoyance.
But tonight…
His attention had been on me more than once.
And that alone was already changing too many things.
I forced myself to calm down and pretended to focus on the glass in my hand.
The ballroom slowly returned to its usual noise. Nobles resumed their conversations, and the musicians continued playing elegant melodies.
But the strange tension from earlier still lingered in the air.
Across the hall, Serena Alvarado stood quietly among a group of noble ladies who had begun speaking to her.
She looked slightly overwhelmed but smiled politely at everyone.
Just like the heroine I wrote.
Kind.
Gentle.
Easy to like.
In the original story, this was the moment when her relationship with the prince would begin to grow.
But now that scene had been completely skipped.
Because Alejandro had walked past her.
So the story really is changing.
A small shiver ran down my spine.
Changing the story could save me.
But it could also create unpredictable consequences.
I took a slow breath and reminded myself of the most important rule.
Stay away from the male lead.
That alone would already reduce half the dangers waiting for the villainess.
Just as I began to relax again, another voice suddenly spoke behind me.
“Well… this is unexpected.”
I turned around.
A tall man stood a few steps away, holding a glass of wine in one hand.
His dark brown hair was slightly messy, but his posture was relaxed and confident. Unlike most nobles in the room, he didn’t look stiff or overly formal.
Instead, there was a calm intelligence in his eyes.
He smiled faintly.
“Lady Amara Villareal.”
My mind froze for half a second.
Then recognition hit me.
Lord Adrian Monteverde.
One of the most influential young nobles in the empire.
And—
The second male lead of the story.
In the original plot, Adrian was known as the prince’s trusted ally and one of the most brilliant strategists in the royal court.
But unlike the prince, he was warm and approachable.
Many noble ladies admired him.
But Adrian rarely showed interest in anyone.
Except—
My memory stopped there.
Because in the original story, Adrian never paid much attention to the villainess.
Which meant his presence here… talking to me… was already strange.
I quickly composed myself and bowed slightly.
“Lord Adrian.”
His smile widened a little.
“You remember me.”
“Of course.”
He studied my face for a moment.
“Interesting.”
“What is?”
“I expected you to be somewhere else tonight.”
My brows furrowed slightly.
“And where would that be?”
He tilted his head toward the other side of the ballroom.
Where Prince Alejandro stood among several nobles.
“I thought you would be following His Highness around,” Adrian said casually.
I almost laughed.
Everyone really believes that about me.
“Well,” I replied calmly, “people can change.”
Adrian’s eyes narrowed slightly.
For a moment, he didn’t say anything.
Then he suddenly chuckled.
“I heard you told the prince something similar earlier.”
My heart skipped.
How did he hear that?
The balcony scene had not been exactly private.
But I hadn’t expected someone to notice.
“You seem… different tonight, Lady Amara,” Adrian continued.
“Many people have said that already.”
“And they’re not wrong.”
He took a sip of his wine, still watching me carefully.
“Usually you would have been standing beside the prince by now.”
“And usually,” I said lightly, “people expect things that aren’t true.”
Adrian laughed softly.
“You’re far more interesting than I remember.”
That sentence made me uneasy.
Because the last thing I needed right now…
Was more attention.
Before I could respond, a sudden shift in the room caught my attention.
The nobles near the center of the ballroom moved aside.
And a familiar figure began walking toward us.
My stomach dropped.
Prince Alejandro.
Why is he coming here?
Adrian noticed it too.
He glanced behind me, then raised one eyebrow slightly.
“Well,” he murmured, “it seems we’re about to gain company.”
I slowly turned around.
Alejandro approached with the same calm expression he always carried.
But his eyes were focused on only one person.
Me.
The moment he stopped in front of us, Adrian gave a respectful nod.
“Your Highness.”
Alejandro acknowledged him briefly.
“Lord Adrian.”
Then his gaze shifted back to me.
The silence that followed felt heavier than the music filling the ballroom.
For a moment, none of us spoke.
Then Adrian suddenly smiled.
“Well, this is quite rare.”
Alejandro glanced at him.
“What is?”
“You approaching Lady Amara yourself.”
The prince didn’t answer immediately.
His dark eyes remained on me.
Studying.
Analyzing.
Then he finally spoke.
“Is that unusual?”
Adrian chuckled.
“Very.”
I wanted to disappear.
Because standing between these two powerful men was definitely not part of my survival plan.
Alejandro’s gaze never left my face.
“Lady Amara.”
“Yes, Your Highness.”
“You seem to be attracting quite a bit of attention tonight.”
Adrian laughed softly.
“And here I thought I was the one who approached her first.”
Alejandro’s expression remained calm.
But something cold flickered briefly in his eyes.
For the first time that evening…
I had the strange feeling that the atmosphere between the two men had changed.
Just slightly.
But enough to make the situation dangerous.
And somehow—
Without even trying—
I had just placed myself in the middle of it.
This is exactly the kind of situation I was trying to avoid.
