POV: Alejandro
The night air on the palace balcony was colder than usual.
Or perhaps it only felt that way because of the strange tension lingering between us.
I stood quietly, observing the woman in front of me.
Lady Amara Villareal.
A noblewoman who had been following me for years.
At least… that was what everyone believed.
The daughter of the powerful Villareal family had never hidden her interest in me before. Every banquet, every royal gathering, every formal event—she was always there, trying to approach me.
Trying to start a conversation.
Trying to gain my attention.
It had become predictable.
Almost annoying.
But tonight…
Something was different.
Very different.
She wasn’t trying to impress me.
She wasn’t smiling nervously.
She wasn’t even looking at me the way she used to.
Instead, she looked calm.
Composed.
Almost distant.
My eyes narrowed slightly.
What changed?
The Lady Amara I knew would have already said something flattering by now.
Yet the woman standing in front of me simply bowed politely.
“No.”
Her answer still echoed in my mind.
I had asked if she planned to approach me.
And she had refused.
Just like that.
Without hesitation.
That alone was strange enough to catch my attention.
But it wasn’t the only thing.
There was something about the way she carried herself tonight.
Her posture was confident.
Her expression calm.
Even the way she spoke felt… controlled.
This was not the behavior of a woman obsessed with the crown prince.
This was the behavior of someone who had nothing to gain from speaking to me.
Which made me curious.
And curiosity was dangerous.
Because I rarely felt it.
I studied her quietly.
Under the moonlight, her dark hair moved slightly with the wind. The soft glow from the palace lanterns reflected in her eyes, giving them a mysterious shine.
For a brief moment, she looked almost unfamiliar.
As if the woman in front of me was not the same noble lady everyone talked about.
“You seem different tonight,” I repeated.
She met my gaze calmly.
“I’m not sure what you mean, Your Highness.”
Her voice was steady.
Not nervous.
Not desperate.
Just… honest.
That answer only made my curiosity grow.
Most nobles feared speaking to me.
Others tried too hard to impress me.
But this woman seemed completely unaffected.
Interesting.
I took a step closer.
The distance between us grew smaller.
If she noticed, she did not step back.
Another unusual detail.
“You have been attending royal gatherings for years,” I said calmly. “Yet tonight is the first time you are trying to avoid me.”
Her expression remained neutral.
“I wouldn’t say I’m avoiding you.”
“Oh?”
“Just… giving Your Highness some peace.”
For a moment, I almost laughed.
Peace?
That was certainly not the reason she had been chasing me before.
I crossed my arms slightly.
“And what made you change your mind?”
The wind brushed across the balcony again, moving the silk fabric of her dress.
She hesitated for a brief moment.
Then she spoke.
“People can change.”
A simple answer.
But something about the way she said it felt genuine.
As if she truly believed those words.
I stared at her for a moment longer.
Then the corner of my lips moved slightly.
“Indeed,” I said quietly.
Inside the ballroom, the music started playing again.
Through the open doors, I could hear nobles laughing and talking.
The banquet continued as if nothing unusual had happened.
Yet here on the balcony, something had clearly changed.
The woman in front of me had become unpredictable.
And unpredictability was rare in the royal court.
Most people revealed their intentions immediately.
Power.
Influence.
Marriage.
But this woman…
For the first time, I could not read her.
Which meant only one thing.
She had become interesting.
I glanced toward the ballroom for a moment.
Then back at her.
“You should return to the banquet, Lady Amara,” I said calmly.
“The nobles may start wondering where you went.”
She nodded politely.
“Of course, Your Highness.”
But before she could leave, I spoke again.
“One more question.”
She stopped.
Then slowly turned back toward me.
“Yes?”
I studied her expression carefully.
“If you are no longer interested in gaining my attention… then what are you planning to do instead?”
For a brief moment, something flickered in her eyes.
Surprise.
Then determination.
Her answer came quietly.
“I plan to survive.”
Those words made me pause.
Survive?
An unusual choice of words.
But before I could ask what she meant, she bowed politely.
“Good evening, Your Highness.”
Then she walked past me and returned to the ballroom.
Leaving me alone on the balcony.
The night felt strangely silent now.
I looked toward the doors where she had disappeared.
My mind replayed the conversation again.
I plan to survive.
What exactly did she mean by that?
Lady Amara Villareal was one of the most powerful noble daughters in the empire.
She had wealth.
Status.
Influence.
There was no reason for someone like her to speak about survival.
Unless…
She believed something dangerous was coming.
My gaze moved toward the grand hall again.
Hundreds of nobles were gathered inside.
Each of them smiling politely.
Each of them hiding their own ambitions.
The royal court had always been a battlefield.
But hearing those words from her made the atmosphere feel slightly different.
More dangerous.
More unpredictable.
And strangely enough—
More interesting.
I turned away from the balcony and began walking back toward the ballroom.
The music grew louder again.
The nobles continued their conversations.
Yet my attention searched through the crowd.
Until I found her.
Lady Amara Villareal stood near one of the marble pillars, calmly speaking with a noblewoman.
From the outside, nothing seemed unusual.
But now that I looked closer…
I noticed the small details.
The confidence in her posture.
The calmness in her voice.
The way she carefully observed the people around her.
She was studying the room.
As if analyzing something.
Or preparing for something.
My eyes narrowed slightly.
Whatever had changed inside that woman tonight…
It was not something simple.
And for some reason—
I had the feeling that this change would affect the entire empire.
The music rose again as nobles began to dance in the center of the ballroom.
But my attention remained fixed on one person.
Lady Amara Villareal.
The woman who had suddenly stopped chasing me.
And somehow…
That simple change had made her far more dangerous than before.
Far more intriguing.
And without realizing it—
I had already started watching her.
