CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR That Night Big Springs, Texas “Oh, God.” Max yawned for the tenth time as he and Leslie cruised down the dark, desolate highway. “We gotta find a motel.” He steered with one hand. “Sure miss my cell phone right now.” He chuckled. “Could’ve looked one up.” Leslie sighed, propping her elbow against the window. They passed a cluster of diners and fast food restaurants. “There’s Diary Queen,” Max announced. “You want something to eat? I could use an ice cream shake right about now.” She batted, her eyes straight ahead on the white Toyota in front of them. “You haven’t said anything in four hours.” He straightened in the seat. “I’m sorry I got you into this and I promise I’ll make it right.” He glanced at her. “Are you scared?
