BOUND BY FATE
Episode 8: The Caretaker's Secret
A cold breeze swept through the abandoned nursery.
Maya stood frozen, staring at the blood-red words painted across the wall.
**WELCOME HOME, MAYA.**
Her breathing became shallow.
"Who would do this?" she whispered.
Adrian stepped in front of her, scanning every corner of the room.
"This wasn't written twenty years ago," he said, touching the fresh paint. "It's still wet."
Someone had been inside the orphanage only moments earlier.
Suddenly, another loud creak echoed from the hallway.
Adrian grabbed Maya's hand.
"Come on."
They rushed into the corridor just in time to see a shadow disappear around the corner.
"Stop!" Adrian shouted.
They ran after the figure through the long, dusty hallway. The stranger moved surprisingly fast despite appearing elderly.
When they reached the staircase, the figure slipped, falling to one knee.
Adrian caught up and pulled back the hood.
An old woman looked up at them with frightened eyes.
Her gray hair was untidy, and her face was marked by deep wrinkles.
"Please," she begged. "Don't hurt me."
Maya stepped closer.
"Who are you?"
"My name is Margaret," the woman replied. "I was the caretaker of this orphanage."
Maya's heart raced.
"You know who I am?"
Margaret nodded slowly.
"I've been waiting for this day for twenty years."
She led them into a small hidden room beneath the stairs. It was filled with dusty boxes, old toys, and stacks of files she had secretly protected after the orphanage closed.
"I stayed because I knew someone would come back," Margaret said.
Maya held up the silver locket.
"My parents... what happened to them?"
Tears filled the old woman's eyes.
"They loved you more than anything."
"Then why did everyone tell me they abandoned me?"
"They didn't."
Margaret's voice trembled.
"They were betrayed."
Adrian exchanged a worried glance with Maya.
"Betrayed by whom?" he asked.
Before Margaret could answer, she reached into a wooden chest and removed an old leather diary.
"This belonged to your mother."
Maya carefully accepted it, her hands shaking.
Inside the cover was a handwritten note.
**To my beautiful daughter, Maya. If you are reading this, it means I could not protect you. Never believe the lies they tell you. Trust your heart, and never stop searching for the truth.**
Tears rolled down Maya's cheeks.
"This... this is her handwriting?"
Margaret nodded.
"I watched your mother write those words the night before she died."
Maya hugged the diary tightly.
"I finally have something that belonged to her."
Adrian gently placed a hand on her shoulder.
"We're getting closer."
Just then, Margaret's smile disappeared.
"They'll come."
"Who?" Adrian asked.
"The Black Circle."
The room fell silent.
"They controlled powerful businessmen, politicians, and police officers. Anyone who stood against them disappeared."
Adrian frowned.
"My father was investigating them before he died."
Margaret looked directly at him.
"I know."
Before anyone could speak again—
BANG!
A gunshot shattered the window.
Glass exploded across the room.
"Get down!" Adrian shouted.
A second bullet struck the wall inches from Maya's head.
Outside, several black vehicles screeched to a halt.
Masked men poured out, surrounding the orphanage.
Margaret's face turned white.
"They've found us..."
As Adrian looked through the broken window, his expression hardened.
"There are too many."
Then the front doors burst open.
Heavy footsteps echoed through the building.
A calm female voice called ...
But she couldn't remember where.
