I waited for one second, then two, until I waited for five second, but there was nothing.
There was no shuffling from the inside, or even an irritated groan. No “What do you want now?”… which would have honestly been a relief, because then, I would have turned from there and Harper would have left me the heck alone.
All I heard was just silence, one that was thick enough to squeeze around my ribs.
“She’s asleep,” I muttered into the phone, more hopeful than certain. I didn't even want to be certain at this point. I just wanted to be gone from here and do it in a clean enough way, Harper would get off my back.
