Chapter Three:The Council Of Ash And Blood

They took her to the heart of the territory—past ancient stone markers etched with runes, into a darkened forest lit only by fireflies and moonlight. Ariana walked between Kael and the silver-eyed elder, every step dragging her deeper into a world she didn’t ask for. But something in her stirred—something that remembered this place. A song in her blood. A pulse that matched the rhythm of the land. They reached a clearing. Massive stones rose in a perfect circle, weathered by time, glowing faintly under the moon. Wolves stood between them—dozens of them. In human form and beast alike, their eyes tracked her every movement. Kael stepped forward, his voice steady. “She is Ariana of the Moonfang line. The last blood of Alaric.” Gasps rippled through the circle. Murmurs. “She is untrained,” one woman said coldly. “Untested. Her presence is a danger.” “She’s not ready,” said another. “She could be a liability.” “Enough,” the elder snapped. His voice silenced the night. “She is not here to be judged. She is here to be claimed.” Ariana stiffened. “Claimed?” Kael’s jaw tightened. “He means recognized. By the council. As the heir.” “I don’t want a crown,” Ariana spat. “I don’t want any of this.” The elder’s eyes burned into her. “Want it or not, child, your blood carries power. And power ignored becomes power stolen.” The crowd parted as another figure approached. She was tall, statuesque, dressed in blood-red robes. Her eyes were darker than pitch, but her face was hauntingly familiar. Ariana took a step back. “Mother?” she whispered. The woman’s lips curled. “No, child. But I knew her. Lira was my sister.” Aunt. Ariana’s knees nearly buckled. The woman’s voice was silk wrapped in steel. “You were hidden from us all this time. We feared you were dead. But now… now the prophecy stirs again.” Ariana shook her head. “What prophecy?” Kael’s voice cut in. “She doesn’t need to be tangled in myths and riddles. She needs time. Space. And training.” But the aunt ignored him. “The child of wolf and shadow. Born under the Blood Eclipse. Marked by the moon. The one who will either break the packs… or unite them.” All eyes turned to Ariana. She felt the forest tighten around her. The pressure of fate. The fire in her chest began to rise again. The mark pulsed. “No,” she whispered. “I can’t—” And then the pain hit her. Worse than before. She dropped to her knees, clutching her sides as the ground beneath her trembled. Her breath came in gasps. Her skin flickered with light. Kael rushed forward, falling to his knees beside her. “She’s shifting again,” someone whispered. “No,” Kael said grimly. “This isn’t a shift. This is something else.” --- Within the Flames Ariana’s vision blurred. She was no longer in the forest. She stood in a silver-lit field beneath a red moon. Shadows danced around her, forming wolves and spirits. A single voice echoed through the wind: “Find the blade. Break the chain. The blood of your mother binds you still.” She spun. “Who are you?” But the voice only repeated: “Find the blade. Break the chain…” Then—fire. Burning, cleansing. And a scream. --- Back in the Circle Ariana collapsed, unconscious. Kael caught her before she hit the ground. He looked up, his eyes gold with rage. “You said she’d be safe.” The aunt’s smile was small. “She is more than you understand, Alpha. And she has only just begun to awaken.” The room was dim, quiet, and warm. Ariana stirred, her lashes fluttering as the scent of pine and leather wrapped around her like a familiar cloak. She wasn’t in the clearing anymore. She was lying on soft furs inside a cabin, the wooden walls glowing from the fire’s soft flicker. She tried to move—pain lanced through her ribs. Her body felt like it had been set ablaze then pieced back together. Then she felt it—him. Kael sat nearby, unmoving, staring into the fire. “Still pretending to be asleep?” he asked, his voice rough with exhaustion. Ariana opened her eyes fully. “You stayed.” “I wasn’t going to leave you.” Their eyes met. A quiet understanding passed between them, unspoken but undeniable. “You shifted,” he said. “But that wasn’t just a normal shift. Something… ancient was awakened inside you.” She looked away. “I don’t know what’s happening to me, Kael. I didn’t ask for this.” He leaned closer. “Neither did I. But I’d burn this whole world before I let it take you.” Her breath caught. Before either could say more, the door creaked open. The elder wolf entered, followed by Ariana’s aunt—the woman with the obsidian eyes. “She’s awake,” the aunt said smoothly. “Good. We don’t have time.” Kael stood, already bristling. “She needs rest.” The aunt ignored him and turned to Ariana. “Do you remember the voice you heard in the flames?” Ariana stiffened. “Yes.” “The blade it spoke of is real. Your mother hid it. It can unbind the magic that still chains her. If you find it, you can free her.” Ariana’s heart jumped. “My mother is alive?” Kael’s eyes widened. The aunt nodded. “She was taken by the Shadowborn—the cursed pack that betrayed us centuries ago. They used her blood to seal a dark bond. Only her daughter—only you—can undo it.” Silence. Ariana’s chest ached. Her mother. Alive. “I’ll find it,” she whispered. “Whatever it takes.” The aunt smiled—satisfied. “Then you must come with me. The map is in the Temple of Embers, guarded by spirits that don’t welcome strangers. Only blood kin can pass.” Kael stepped forward. “She’s not going alone.” “You are not her keeper,” the aunt snapped. “You’ve done enough by awakening the bond.” Kael’s golden gaze turned to Ariana. “Do you want me with you?” Ariana hesitated. Her fingers gripped the fur beneath her. She didn’t want to need anyone—but Kael had been there. When the fire came. When the pain broke her. When no one else could reach her. “I do,” she said softly. Kael’s jaw clenched, but he nodded. The aunt rolled her eyes. “Fine. But keep up. We leave by moonrise.” --- Elsewhere – A Cold Awakening In the ruins beyond the mountain pass, something old stirred. The Shadowborn Alpha opened his eyes. A raven sat on his shoulder, feathers slick with blood. “She awakens,” he murmured. A voice echoed from the dark: “The child of fire and prophecy. She will seek the blade.” The Shadowborn grinned. “Then let her come. I’ve waited eighteen years for this moment. Let her bring the blade. Let her bring her mother’s soul to me.”
