Chapter Two: Beneath The Surface

1447 Words
The woods swallowed her whole. Branches whipped at her arms as she tore through the trees, breathing hard, mind spinning. Kael’s voice echoed in her head—You're my mate. What did that even mean? Every step felt heavier. Her body was no longer her own. Her legs moved faster than she meant them to. Her skin tingled like electricity pulsed beneath it. The burning mark on her chest pulsed in rhythm with her heartbeat, like it was alive. A mate. She stumbled over a root and collapsed against a tree, clutching her sides as pain lanced through her ribs. It wasn’t from the fall. It came from inside. Deep and sharp, like her bones were stretching, fighting to tear free from the shell of who she thought she was. “No,” she whispered, fingers digging into the earth. “No, I’m not one of them—” But her memory said otherwise. Flashes of her mother’s voice, soft and strong, calling her Ariya. A name she’d never heard before, but somehow it rang through her like a forgotten song. Her father’s laughter—low and warm. His large arms lifting her into the air. The forest… bathed in silver moonlight. Then the blood. The howling. The smell of burning fur and magic. She dropped her head to the ground, teeth clenched against a scream. “Make it stop…” But the pain only grew. Bones cracked. Skin burned. She could feel herself breaking—and rebuilding. Her breath came in ragged gasps. Something ancient stirred in her chest, something primal and hungry. She wasn’t human. She never had been. And now—she was becoming what she was born to be. --- Kael He felt it before he saw it. A shockwave of energy burst through the trees, like lightning pulsing through the ground. He froze, every hair on his body rising. He’d barely made it back to his car before the bond snapped tight inside him. Ariana was shifting. “Damn it,” he muttered, taking off into the woods. She wasn’t ready. She hadn’t been told what it meant, what it would do to her. No training, no preparation. A first shift that came by force could break a wolf’s mind. Or worse—shatter their body. He followed her scent—earth, cinnamon, wild things barely contained. The rain had washed most of the trail, but the bond tugged at him like a tether. He didn’t think. He ran. He found her half-hidden beneath the roots of an old oak. Or rather, he found what she was becoming. Her limbs had elongated. Fur—silver-dark and streaked with blue—sprouted across her arms. Her fingers had split, bones snapping, reshaping. Her back arched, her eyes glowing white-blue in the shadow of the tree. Kael dropped to his knees beside her. “Ariana. Listen to me. You need to breathe.” She snarled—half in pain, half in fear. “It’s okay. I’m here,” he said, his voice low, almost a growl. “You’re not alone. Let it happen. Don’t fight it.” Her glowing eyes locked onto him. Recognition. Trust. And then, shame. “I can’t—” she choked out. “It hurts—gods, it hurts!” “I know,” Kael said. “But the pain is your body remembering what your mind forgot. You’re not dying. You’re awakening.” She writhed, body twisting. Then—finally—it happened. Her body collapsed in on itself. And in the space of a breath, a wolf stood where Ariana had been. She was magnificent. Tall, powerful, covered in sleek moon-touched fur. Her eyes, still glowing that pale blue, stared up at him, wide and terrified. Kael reached out slowly, resting his hand against her muzzle. “You’re okay,” he whispered. “You’re whole.” She whimpered softly. Confused. Disoriented. He could feel her mind trembling behind her eyes. Kael shifted. The transformation overtook him in seconds—fluid, practiced. His bones cracked, realigned, and fur spread over his skin until the Alpha stood beside her in his own beast form. Midnight black, eyes gold as fire. He nuzzled her gently, offering the only comfort a wolf could give another in that moment. She didn’t pull away. They stood like that for what felt like hours, the rain falling in soft sheets, cooling the fire between their bodies. --- Later… They returned to the edge of the forest at dusk. Ariana was silent, wrapped in Kael’s coat, her human form whole again—but changed. Her hair gleamed silver in the fading light. Her eyes still carried that faint blue glow. She looked at him like he held answers she wasn’t ready to hear. “So,” she said finally. “This is real. All of it.” He nodded. “And I’m… one of you.” “You’re more than that,” Kael said. “You’re the daughter of Alaric Moonfang, and Lira of the Shadow Vale. You’re born of two royal bloodlines. You’re not just a wolf. You’re legacy.” Ariana blinked, stunned. “Royal?” He offered a wry smile. “Which makes you a threat to every pack that wants power—including mine.” She crossed her arms. “Is that why you’re here? To protect me? Or to use me?” Kael didn’t flinch. “I don’t lie to mates, Ariana. I came because I felt you. Because your wolf called to mine. But protecting you… that comes with the bond. It’s not something I chose. It’s something I am.” She turned away, jaw tight. “I don’t want to be mated. I didn’t ask for any of this.” “No,” he said softly. “But neither did I.” Their eyes met again. The air between them was sharp with tension. Pain. Something darker underneath. Desire. But Ariana turned before it could grow into something neither of them were ready for. “I need to think,” she said. “Alone.” Kael didn’t argue. He let her walk away. But as she disappeared into the trees, he whispered to the wind, “You can run, Ariana. But fate always finds its way.” Ariana moved silently through the thick woods, her mind a storm of confusion and fear. The cool night air brushed against her skin, but the burning inside her did not fade. The shift had changed everything. She wasn’t human anymore—never really was. Her feet carried her away from the village, away from Kael and the binding words of “mate.” She didn’t want to believe it. She refused to be someone’s destiny. But the forest was alive with whispers. The rustling leaves carried voices—low, threatening. “Run, Ari. They’re coming.” The voice was hers, but foreign—wilder, sharper. A branch snapped behind her. She whirled to face the sound. Two glowing eyes pierced the darkness. “Who’s there?” she demanded, her voice steadier than she felt. From the shadows stepped a figure—tall, lithe, eyes burning red with a wildness that sent ice through her veins. “Lost little wolf,” the stranger said, voice laced with menace. “You think you can hide from the past?” Ariana’s heart hammered. She recognized the eyes—Kael’s pack. But this was no friend. “Why do you hunt me?” she whispered, backing away. The stranger smiled cruelly. “Because your awakening threatens everything.” Before Ariana could react, the figure lunged. --- Far from the chaos, Kael stood at the edge of the forest, senses razor-sharp. His wolf howled inside him—a warning. Someone was hunting her. He sprinted through the trees, the bond pulling him toward Ariana’s scent—frightened, desperate. He arrived just as the stranger grabbed her arm. With a roar, Kael exploded from the shadows, full beast, fur bristling with power. The stranger released Ariana, snarling. Kael stepped between them, muscles tense, eyes blazing gold. “You will not touch her,” he growled. The stranger laughed, but before she could answer, another figure appeared—an elder wolf with eyes like molten silver. “Enough,” the elder commanded. “This fight is not yours to choose.” Kael lowered his head reluctantly, but his gaze never left Ariana. The elder’s voice softened. “She is the key. The heir. And she must be protected—whether she wants it or not.” Ariana stared at the wolves, feeling the weight of destiny pressing down on her. “Protected?” she asked bitterly. “Or imprisoned?”
