When Merrick started to walk away, Audrey grabbed hold of him, not wanting to be deserted. What did she know about forests? She’d been raised in a city. “You’re not leaving us alone. Anything could be here.”
He captured her hand, removing it from his arm and keeping hold of it. “I need to examine the road where we were ambushed. I don’t have the strength to carry your brother around. Not after being held by Madlen for days. Possibly more than a week.”
“You don’t know how long she had you imprisoned?”
“I was kept in that room. I had no idea if it was day or night or how much time passed.” He lightly squeezed her hand. “Stay with your brother. He could wake at any time. You don’t want him to wake and find himself alone.” He let go of her hand.
