After drinking another bottle of yellow rice wine, Mr. Jacobs’ face turned from red to purple. He waved at Gina, then covered his mouth and ran out to throw up. Mr. Cook pointed at his sorry figure from behind and said, “No way, no way. He’s not a drinker. What a bummer!”
Just as Gina was about to speak, Mr. Cook looked at Toni sitting to one side, and said with a smile, “Miss Smith, I heard that you can sing very well. Do you know how to sing Bosom Lover? Shall we sing it together?”
Toni had expected Mr. Cook to start urging both of them to drink as soon as Mr. Jacobs left. She really didn’t like social i*********e and couldn't drink at all, but she certainly understood the situation, and definitely wasn't the sort of person who drops the ball at the last minute. If the client wanted to drink, she’d just drink with him. If the worst came to worst, she’d just have a headache, a hangover or even have her stomach pumped.
She freely had a few drinks with Mr. Cook who looked cheerful at her company. Toni was wearing a smile on her face, but she actually felt very dizzy. She was burning from her throat to her stomach, which caused her to burst into tears. Mr. Cook patted her on the shoulder and said that he liked heroines like her, and that they'd have to keep talking and not go home until they got wasted.
Mr. Cook was quite domineering. After drinking, Toni had reckless thoughts about venting the anger that she had held back all day. A few more glasses of wine made her insides turn upside down, and Mr. Cook just kept pouring her more. Just as Toni raised her arm to take the glass, Gina suddenly sat next to her, grabbed the glass with one hand and embraced her with the other, secretly pushing her behind herself to protect her. She clinked her glass against Mr. Cook’s with her face breaking into a wide grin, saying,
“Miss Smith can’t hold her alcohol very well. Mr. Cook, I didn’t expect her to be so happy to see you and drink so freely. Miss Hill used to want to drink with her during team-building events, but she refused her. Miss Smith really showed respect to you just then.”
As Gina rambled and chatted with Mr. Cook, Toni felt dizzy and wanted to interrupt and explain, but Gina stopped her. As Toni felt herself becoming more drunk, the scene of Mr. Cook’s oily face and Gina drinking one glass of wine after another slowly became distant to her. The warmth of the karaoke room surrounded her, and the desire for infinite sleep rose up. The alcohol made her fall asleep in no time.
She regained consciousness when she was awoken by the sound of a closing door. As Toni opened her eyes, the unfamiliar environment made her mind go blank for several seconds. Gina’s voice outside the room made her jolt into a sitting position.
The karaoke room was filled with the smell of smoke and alcohol, and there was no one but her in there.
Did Mr. Cook leave?
Toni stood up. Her sleep just now was very important, driving away 90% of the alcohol in her body.
When she opened the door and walked out, she saw that Mr. Jacobs’ legs were as weak as noodles, and he was struggling to carry Mr. Cook. Mr. Cook moved forward with his legs crossed, hanging on Mr. Jacobs’ body. He then turned around and pointed at Gina, saying, “Okay, okay! I like you! Little girl... you have the heroic spirit needed for doing business with different clients. Plus, you can drink a lot. I admire you! I admire you! Your Miss Hill might not be as good as you! Girl, your future is limitless... *Hiccup*! *Hiccup*!”
Gina stood upright, waved to Mr. Cook with a folder in her arms, and said to Mr. Jacobs, “Escort Mr. Cook back safely. Mr. Cook, check in with me when you get home. Stay safe.”
Mr. Cook was carried away, but they could still hear him mumbling about Gina in the aisle.
As Toni stepped forward, Gina didn’t look very well and had a strong stench of alcohol. She still looked quite relaxed though. She handed the folder she was carrying to Toni, who's eyes lit up in surprise upon opening it. “He signed it?”
Gina breathed a sigh of relief and said, “I had to make him sign it, otherwise we’d have drunk all of that for nothing.”
“You brought the contract here?” Toni was amused.
“Of course I did. I had to make him sign it when he was drunk and confused. Otherwise he'd regret it after waking up tomorrow morning.” Gina said, “Miss Smith, do you really dislike these kinds of events? Of course. They’re full of smoke and alcohol, which makes people feel uncomfortable. You drank too fast. He asked you to drink and you just did it. Drinking too much too fast will definitely make you feel unwell. I saw you fall asleep. Are you okay now? Are you feeling uncomfortable?”
Gina said these things with a gentle expression in her eyes as if she was Toni's elder or a senior employee, which was very unlike the person she always was in the office. A person who always tried to steal the lead and play tit for tat games whenever she could.
“I'm fine. I feel much better after sleeping.”
“Okay, let's take a taxi back. Mr. Jacobs and the driver have sent Mr. Cook home. Gina took out her cell phone to call a taxi. Toni looked at the file in her hand and asked wonderingly, “Don’t you want to keep the contract yourself?”
After all, it's Gina who got this contract signed. Toni definitely wouldn't take the credit.
“The car is about to arrive. Please wait by the side of the road...”
