Chapter 2 Gossip

1117 Words
"The proposal we worked overtime to finish last Friday got rejected." Cathy handed her the folder she was carrying, "Gina Bailey said that the proposal isn't detailed enough, which has affected her careful budget calculation, so she asked us to redo it. But we'll be reporting on the proposal at the morning meeting. What does she intend to achieve by saying no right now? It's clear that she wants to embarrass us at the meeting."     Toni pressed the proposal under her palm, leaning on the table with one hand while frowning. Her temper immediately began to fray, "It's Gina Bailey again."     Cathy sighed and said, "Ever since she was promoted, things like this have never stopped. I don't know why she always has to be against someone, whether that's us or somebody else." Cathy's expression suddenly changed, and she whispered in Toni's ear, "Everyone knows that the position of General Manager of the North China Region will be either yours or hers. Boss, why is she so mean and playing dirty like this? She just wants to overshadow you so you will lose the position. Apparently, she has a very good relationship with the CEO and often sleeps at her house. Lots of people say that they're too close to each other. The two women..."     "Have you prepared everything we need for the upcoming meeting?" As Toni interrupted her, Cathy saw that her boss looked upset and immediately ran to work.     Toni hated her nemesis, who played dirty tricks on her however she could, and had no interest in gossip about her private life. However, this wasn't the first time that she'd heard about the unusual relationship between Gina and the CEO. When Gina first entered the company, she was an outside manager, which made a lot of people envious.     A group of people walked through the corridor outside her office into the conference room inside.     The morning meeting was about to begin.     The executives of the company walked together while talking. Toni looked up and glanced at Gina walking shoulder to shoulder with the CEO among all the uniform formal clothes.     The CEO, Charlotte Hill, had a lot of makeup on today. She had extremely sharp eyes, and her lips with their gaudy color were very close to Gina's ear. Her eyebrows were slightly raised as if she was talking about something that was niggling at her. Compared with Charlotte's sharpness, Gina had a calm smile on her face, and looked a lot more relaxed. Her hair was pulled back in a slick bun, which showed off her thin white neck, making her look young and full of vigor. The most important thing was that she exuded subtle confidence. Even if she appeared with Charlotte, the famous devil of the group, she would not be overwhelmed by her imposing manner and still attract people's attention.     Seeing the two walking together as closely as the rumors suggested, Toni suddenly remembered what Mr. Walker, overshadowed and replaced by Gina, had said to her.     "Smith, don't be too naive. This company doesn't belong to you. You won't get what isn't yours no matter how hard you work. Look at me. I have never been late, even when it was windy and rainy. I even finished my work before getting an IV drip when I was sick. You know what? I was with a client when my wife gave birth to my child, and I drank so much at a business meeting that I ruptured my stomach and was hospitalized. I have treated the company as my own for ten years and worked myself to the bone for my boss. But what did I get? That Gina Bailey, who the hell is she? An arrogant woman popped out of nowhere and became my superior when she was here. I've been working so hard for nothing. Looking at you is like looking at myself from those days. Smith, I know I'm a failure, and I'm not giving you any lecture. People in this society only care about favors and pulling strings. Did you work overtime last night again? I'd suggest you not take your work too seriously. Just get by in whatever way you can."     As Mr. Walker talked about Gina's affairs, he also bit his tongue. It seemed that she had all kinds of ambiguous connections with the group's senior management.     In that case, has the position of General Manager of the North China Region already been decided? While she was working so hard day and night, had Gina already drawn up her winning speech?     As Toni became enveloped in a strong sense of anxiety, her thoughts slowly coming together, Gina suddenly turned around and looked at her office. Toni's prying eyes caught hers, in which a guilty conscience briefly flickered out of nowhere. Toni forced herself to calm down and looked away while pretending to act cool, causing her to miss Gina's unclear smile.     The morning meeting began.     Toni began the proceedings by standing in front of the conference room and explaining the proposals naturally and smoothly, facing the gazes of all the company's senior executives. She explained the plan for the next quarter in great detail and without any omissions and made up for the parts with which Gina had found fault. No one could sense any flaws in her confidence. Charlotte nodded in praise.     "This proposal is very well done. This company is fortunate to have such young and talented members like Miss Smith..."     As Toni sat back in her seat, she heard Charlotte's compliment. Charlotte faced her with a naturally unsmiling face and slowly complimented her.     She rarely praised anyone, and the compliment at this time was even more unclear.     This offered a small window of opportunity. Toni believed that she was better than Gina in business ability, leadership skills, and popularity. In addition, she was two years older than Gina, and age is usually linked to experience, which also worked to her advantage.     She's holding good cards in her hand, and the God of Victory definitely favors her...     ...     Everyone stood up when the meeting ended, and dull thuds could be heard from the chair legs rubbing against the carpet. Toni sat in the same place and did not move.     When Charlotte passed her, she patted Toni on the shoulder. Toni wanted to shake Charlotte's hand away at that moment, but as soon as the thought came to her, Charlotte had already left.     The people leaving the room cast a sympathetic glance at her, but Toni didn't look back at them.     Walking at the back of the crowd, Gina stood at the door and hesitated for a while, staring at Toni's back before she left.
